church youth a great party

group was held at Wawasee High School on Sunday evening, Feb. 7. The area youth committee was pleasantly surprised, after planning for 130 people, when 154 young

people showed up. It worked out, though. When the 24 large pizzas were all gone they had popcorn, pop and assorted other foods to chow down on. A wide variety of games and activities were shared by all, including swimming, board games, basketball shooting contests, volleyball, and, of course, eating. The organization to make this and future events possible is the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association, with Harlan Steffen as coordinator. The area youth committee has not determined how often these social events will take place so young people are encouraged to watch for posted signs and newspaper articles for times and places. These events are not just for area young people. This is an outreach program, so anybody from grade seven through age 22 is invited to come out to have some good, clean Christian fun and fellowship with other people their age. The area youth committee deems this event a huge success and expects even more participation at the next get-together to be scheduled.

■ f Working with parents is a labor of love

I ByGLENLONG Staff Writer The ceremony or sacrament of baptism to admit a person into Christianity or a specific Christian church is a very important time to an individual. Being baptized is done in several ways, depending on the practices of the church being joined. These methods of baptism appear in Webster’s Dictionary as “dipping him in water or pouring or sprinkling water on him as a symbol of washing away sin and of spiritual purification.” The immersion method of baptism has a different meaning believed by many to be the true meaning of baptism. Father Hammond, pastor of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church near Syracuse, referred to the Epistle of Paul, the Apostle, to the Romans in the New Testament to share this meaning. Romans 6:3-4 reads, “Know ye not, that so many of us that were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” A Syracuse couple privileged to share in the joy of infant baptism at St. Martin de Porres are

A time of love

By MARIETTA FULLER During special holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas,, etc., and during special observances such as Mother’s Day, birthdays, etc., there seems to be a great deal of love being shown. What is love? It is being kind, unselfish, patient, not envying, and not being proud, thinking, saying, and doing only good things and rejoicing in the truth (1 Cor. 13); bearing one another’s burdens, (Galatians 6:2); showing hospitality (1 Peter 4:9); imparting some spiritual gift (Romans 1:11); in “edifying” (1 Thess. 2:13) — promoting spiritual growth; in inviting the “unchurched” to church; praying for all saints (Eph. 6:18) and others —for this is love on its knees; forgiving those who sin against us (Matthew 6:12); remembering those in need, and visiting the sick, shut-ins, ! ahd those in prison (Matthew

25:35,36). A car sticker said, “Have you hugged your kid today?” Our searching hearts should say, “Have I loved others today?” How do we love God and others? We love God by keeping His commandments (John 14:15); and one of them is to “walk not in sin” (Eph. 4:1-19) for we cannot be filled with the Spirit of Jesus unless the temples of our bodies are cleansed. Jesus said, “without me, ye can do nothing” (John 15:5); and therefore, we have no capacity to love (Romans 5:5). After being cleansed, we ask to be filled with the Spirit and show control by saying such things as “and please help me to live right; then we are greater filled by singing songs or speaking (reading) in psalms, and thanking God. (Eph. 5:18-20). In conclusion: “Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God, and knoweth God” and so every day should be a “Time of Love.”

John and Linda Hickey, who recently moved to Syracuse from Fort Wayne. They were almost immediately drafted by Sister Adele, who was moving from the area, to carry on the function of counseling parents bringing their children for baptism. “We prepare parents for the initiation of their child into the Christian community, which is baptism,” said Linda. “We meet in two sessions, optimally with one set of parents and Godparents. Because of numbers we have met with four families at onetime.” John added that they take their parental concern of the parents for the future of their child and help them see the dignity of baptism, which they are seeking for their child. He said they help the parents realize that the entire Christian community will be welcoming their child. “We help them to understand their responsibility to pass the faith on to their child and challenge them by word and action to do that,” Linda added. “It is exciting for us to be a part of this preparation. The excitement and enthusiasm of new parents are contageous. We even sometimes have the opportunity to hold the new babies.” John calls their preparation time “our opportunity.” He said the second session with parents includes a film of a baptism

Both the Hickeys feel the informal setting of a home, the parents’ or their own, is important as they meet with parents. With a strong background in engagement and marriage preparation seminars while in Fort Wayne, they are a good choice to discuss baptism with parents.

'Have a Heart for family' is theme for Wawasee Heights

Pastor Jerry Walden reported that Wawasee Heights Baptist Church wants to offer help to area families through both spiritual and emotional support groups. Committed to the wellbeing of the family unit, whether as a single parent or a couple, WHBC is building a program that seeks to make attendees better Christians and better parents. , Any who may feel that their family is being pulled apart or have so much to do each day that they collapse at night will learn that they are not alone. Many people feel the same struggle. ■ , i “Have a Heart For Family will be the theme for a family day
