Students compete in state music association contest
Wawasee .High School and North Webster Junior High School band' students and orchestra students from the entire corporation received 31 first and 17 second place awards at the Indiana State School Music Association District Four Solo and Ensemble Contest which was held at Wawasee High School on SaturdayrJ&n. 30. Wawasee High School students competed in four classifications based on grade level and ability. The results of that competition are: i In group I, first place medals were awarded to Bevan Hurd, snare drum solo; Jeff Shields, snare drum solo; Derek Bowen, vibraphone solo; Brian Arnold, snare drum solo; Chris Conkling, trumpet solo; Julie Kern, piccolo solo; and the Wawasee Chamber Orchestra which consists of Faith Hapner, Moni Lange, Larry Horwitz, Spencer Martin, Kara Zimmerman, Tina Horwitz, Rochelle Denney, and Jennifer Wolferman. Rehearsals underway for 'Night of January 16th'
The cast for the Wawasee High School spring play, “Night of January 16th,” has been chosen and rehearsals are underway. The play takes place in a courtroom where a young woman, Karen Andre, is on trial for the mysterious murder of her former employer. No one, including the cast and directors, knows who is telling the truth until the jury, selected audience members, returns their verdict and provides the ending of the play. Derek Bowen Mil play the role of the experienced District Attorney Flint and going up against him will be Brad Gerstner as Defense Attorney; Stevens. Karen Andre, played by Heide Young, must face the grieving widow, Nancy Lee Faulkner, played by Debbie Bjella. Nancy’s wealthy father, John Whitefiled, will be portrayed by Bevan Hurd. Witnesses will be played by Jenny Prado, Ingrid Jungwirth, Chris Thornton, Jason Locke, Danielle Miner, Jacob Adams, Jeff Carillo, and Amy Jodry. Russ Rhodes will oversee the trial as Judge Heath. ) Other members of the cast include: Mani Lange, Shawna Miller, Melanie Barentine, Nikki I Second annual 'Just Say No' program presented Officer Calvin Kline of the Syracuse Police Department and Steve Embree of the Indiana State Police, presented a movie along with their personal experiences to the Syracuse eighth grade class on Friday, Feb. 5. The officers presented the opening of the second annual “Just Say No” program. After presenting their program, the students were allowed to ask questions which the officers answered. The next program will be tomorrow, Thursday, when it will be presented to the seventh graders.

The contest is hosted by the Wawasee High School Music Faculty and the Wawasee Music Boosters Organization.

Paty Suarez is the student director, Jeremy Swartz, stage manager, Eric Breyer is in charge of lights and sound, and Stef Berkey is in charge of art work. The play will be presented Fri-J day, March 18 and March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wawasee High School Auditorium. The play is being directed by Mrs. Charlotte Tyree, assisted by Mrs. Karen Parr. Latchkey program for Syracuse PTO The Syracuse Parent-Teacher Organization is having a special program at the February 17 comeetings at 12 noon and 7 p.m. The meetings will be in the Syracuse Elementary Library. “The Latchkey Kids” will be presented by the United Telephone Speakers Bureau. The 30-minute presentation addresses the growing number of children who are left unsupervised for varying periods of time. A slide presentation will be included to help parents to evaluate when their child is ready to handle this responsibility as well as to provide guidelines for safety and security. There will be a question and answer period following the program. The regular PTO meeting will be after the program.
Mark Randall speaks to North Webster ESP class J
Mark Randall, an employee of Cardinal Center in Warsaw, spoke to the eighth grade ESP class at North Webster School on Wednesday, Feb. 3, about problem solving. ESP is an Extended Study Program offered by the Wawasee Community School Corporation for the highly able language arts students. The students have seven periods of language arts per week. One of the class objectives is to develop problem solving skills. The students compete in the Future Problem Solving Program at the state level. On Butler Dean's List Butler University has announced that Christine Elaine Baumgartner was named to the first semester defeh’s list. Miss Baumgartner, Milford, is a 1986 graduate of Wawasee High School. She is a sophomore at Butler and is majoring in elementary education.
