Warriors' streak stopped at 5

I By MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer Six turned out to be a lucky, as well as an unlucky number for Wawasee at Saturday’s East Noble Sectional. While the Warriors managed to qualify six spots in regional competition, they failed to secure a sixth consecutive sectional championship, yielding the title to East Noble, 178 to 13814. West Noble followed the Warriors with 131 points, while Central Noble, 115, and Westview, 73, finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Competing without their number one seed in the 125-pound weight class, the Warriors were unable to gain any consistency during the day. ‘We had aHqugh draw from first to fourth at one time,”' a reserved Coach Dave VanLue said, noting that three seniors were lost during the course of the year had he juggled some weight classes. Wawasee occurred another setback Saturday as Eliseo Roa, a returning sectional champion, failed to make the trip due to a personal matter. However, the Warriors who were called to the mat managed to respond considering the circumstances, as VanLue stated.

In back are Garrett Ponciroli, 189, and Josh Lantz, 160. Chad Jones also qualified for regional competition, placing second in the 140-pound weight class. (Photo by Mark Huffman)

“We’re not unhappy with the results — we didn’t lay down and die.” Leading the Warrior contingent into regional action Saturday, Feb. 6, at Carroll will be individual champions Rick Weaver, Shawn Jones, Tom Mangas, Josh Lantz, and Garrett Ponciroli. Chad Jones also qualified after losing a hard fought match to Marc Schlichtenmyer of East Noble in the 140-pound weight class. Jones suffered a technical fall with 17 seconds left in the title tilt. Weaver started what looked to be another Wawasee Sectional title when he gained a 6-5 decision over Central Noble’s Charles Fleshman, the number one seed in the 103-pound weight class. However, inconsistency hurt the Warriors, with several falls being evaded by the rest of the field. Shawn Jones managed a 4-3 decision over Ron Blum of East Noble in the 119-pound final, after coming off a strong showing in the Northern Lakes Conference tournament. Tom Mangas also came home a winner, taking the 135-pound final with a 5-3 decision over Westview’s Mike Porter, another number one seed. Rounding out the Wawasee championship field were Josh Lantz and Garrett Ponciroli, who

Goshert calls Patrick's number as Warriors trip Whitko, 53-51

I By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Editor SOUTH WHITLEY - Gary Goshert seems to have Bill Patrick’s number. For the third straight year, a Goshert-coached boys’ basketball team upended Patrick’s Whitko Wildcats. The Warriors turned the trick Friday evening when Darin Atwood scored a three-point play with seven seconds remaining lifting Wawasee to a 53-51 nonconference victory. ‘Atwood turned in the game of his life, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. “I thought Atwood did a great job of asserting himself offensively, we really needed that,” insisted Goshert. “But you have to give all the kids credit, they’ve worked hard and the effort is beginning to show.” Goshert started his string of victories over Whitko in his final season at West Noble. The secorfff-year Wawasee coach whipped the Wildcats last season in Syracuse. The Wildcats, which fell to 8-6 after dropping their fourth straight game, led throughout the contest and looked to be in control when Jim Juillerat’s 10-footer gave the hosts a 38-28 lead late in the third. But a strong Wawasee comeback, fueled by Atwood’s offensive firepower and a pressing Wawasee defense, carried the visitors to the win. Trailing by two, 51-49, with 2:44 remaining, Wawasee — Atwood — scored the final four points of the game as Whitko watched helplessly. The senior guard started the rally by hitting one-of-two free throws with 2:23 left in regulation. After Barry Ousley missed the front end of the bonus with 32 seconds remaining, Atwood came through with the game-winning points. Matt Koble was in position to score the go-ahead points but the junior missed his bonus free throw shot. However, Atwood battled for the rebound and after two attempts at the hole, struck oil. Atwood rebounded his two missed shots and finally sank a left-hander under the hoop. He was fouled on the play which allowed him to complete the scoring — the two-point Wawasee margin.

explosion to take a 23-18 halftime lead. The Warriors continued to dominate the stunned Chargers with a 21-point third period burst. Wawasee’s 21-11 run in the period gave the Warriors a 44-29 lead and the game. Lai Reed led a balanced Wawasee offensive attack with 18 points five assistsand four steals. Wendy Lung chipped in 11 points and Amy Barton added nine points and seven rebounds. A solid defensive effort proved to be the difference in the contest. The Warriors canned 44% of their field goals while forcing West Noble into a 11-for-52 effort (21 percent).

Wawasee’s defense forced the Wildcats into seveii fourth quarter turnovers, three more than they had in the previous three periods. “They got several breaks,” said Patrick, dejected following the game. “They’re pressing us and we get the fouls called on us. I don’t understand it.” Patrick didn’t feel, however, that Wawasee’s press hurt the Wildcats. Instead, the Wildcats were their own worse enemy. “We hurt ourselves, we didn’t play smart,” added the Whitko mentor. “We build a 10-point lead and then let up. We had the game but we let it slip away.” Unlike Patrick’s assessments of the game, Goshert felt his teams press was key in the out-/ come. “Our press may not have hurt them as much as it helped us,” added Goshert. “The full-court press really got us going as did some subs off the bench.” The game was close from the start, although Whitko held a 10-point lead, 38-28, with 1:33 remaining in the third period. Like any other Whitko lead, it vanished in a hurry. The Wildcats, after jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the opening minutes, rested after the first breaks with a 15-13 advantage. Whitko remained on top in the second quarter until Atwood hit a 12-foot jumper with 44 seconds remaining giving the Warriors a 26-25 halftime lead. Seven straight points thirdperiod points gave Whitko a 32-26 advantage, but more importantly, control of the basketball game. But the resilient Warriors never folded. John Erasure broke Whitko’s streak with a soft five-footer, but the Wildcats proceeded to string six more points before the Warriors could counter. JuHlerat capped the spurt with a 10-footer giving the ’Cats their largest lead, 10 points. Once againr though, Patrick’s team couldn’t put the Warriors away. Koble and Dick hit threepointers, sandwiched around a Brett Harter layup to bring the Warriors within four, 40-36, after three. The fourth quarter was just as
