Satan's version of Beatitudes

By ROBERT ELLISON I Pastor Os The Milford United Methodist Church The Beatitudes of Christ found in Matthew 5 have done more than almost anything else to mold imperfect disciples into the Divine image. But even in the face of these positive images, we must be consistently aware that there is another opposing power that we call Satan or the Devil, who seeks to influence all of us with his own version of the Beatitudes. They might read something like this: 1. Blessed are they who are too tired and busy to go to church on Sunday, for they are my best workers. 2. Blessed are they who are bored with the minister’s mannerisms and mistakes, for they get nothing out of the sermon. 3. Blessed is the church

ABS says Russians will not have to pay for Bibles

Russian Baptists, who are awaiting the arrival early this year of a gift of 100,000 Bibles from Baptists in the United States and the Bible Societies, may go to their local churches to obtain copies. Furthermore, churchgoers will not have to pay for them, says Dr. John D. Erickson, an officer of the American Bible Society and also of the global United Bible Societies fellowship, which is producing and shipping the Bibles in partnership with the Baptist World Alliance. The costs have already been borne by the partnership. Christians who receive the Bibles will be asked only to give an offering of thanks for receiving the Scriptures, but this is entirely voluntary. Because they are a gift, the Bibles may not be offered for sale, says Dr. Ulrich Fick, general secretary of ÜBS. That would go against regulations. The only possible distribution channel is through the churches, adds Dr. Fick. Bookstores or

similar outlets of Scriptures do not exist in the Soviet Union, as is also the case in many of the more than 180 countries where the Bible Societies are active; nor is there the same access to the media. This pattern of distribution is identical to the one followed two years ago for a shipment of 10,000 Russian Bibles which the Bible Societies and the Baptists sent to Moscow, the American Bible Societyreports. At that time regional superintendents of the All-Union Council of Evangelical Christians-Baptists (AUCECB) traveled to the capital from other parts of the Soviet Union to collect their allocation, which was based on local church membership. The Bibles were handed out by pastors to members of their congregations. The current coasignment, which consists of 98,000 Bibles in Russian and 2,000 in Ukrainian, were scheduled to leave Stuttgart, West Germany, by road at

North Webster church ‘ ■ a youth group is busy

I ByGLENLONG Staff Writer Jim Davey, associate pastor at North Webster Church of God, and his family have resided in North Webster close to two years. He said he is happy to report that there has been good growth in the youth group of the church, spiritually as well as in number. “Our overall objective in working with our youth is to help them grow in Jesus Christ to build a relationship with Him,” said the pastor. “We try to help the youth catch a vision as to what they can accomplish as a group and get them unified too work together. We’re still not where we want to be, but we’re moving in the right direction.” He added that by helping the youth become unified he hopes to build a sense of unity in the parent group and also help parents work with their children. Davey said involvement in the youth group can help with the ongoing challenge to reach out to parents who do not themselves attend a church. “I have been in youth ministry for about eight years and the objective of Jesus Christ is solid, it never changes even thougtf He continues to teach me more things,” he added. “We see this as a total ministry and want to teach youth wherever they are. The main thing is to get youth involved where they are. I’m concerned to see the churches in the community working together. I admire the efforts of the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association in their new Teen Youth Fellowship. Maybe we can pattern after this.” The pastor said a proper balance is important and he tries to balance what the youth group is doing by constant evaluation. He tries to make sure that too much emphasis is not being made on either fun things or Bible study and observed that there must be a Christian purpose for all the youth group does. “I’ve received so much support from Pastor Steve (Fouts), church leadership and parents,” he said. “It’s great to be a part of a church where members have so much love for each other. ” The Church of God youth group is a very energetic group. They recently completed an all-church auction fund-raiser at which they raised $2,100. At the end of February a ski trip to Michigan is planned for both the junior high

He added that all young people in the North Webster area are welcome to join in this loving fellowship.
