Warriors dunk Blazers: Bremen next

ELKHART — Wawasee moved its record to 11-0 Monday evening as the Warrior boys’ swim team whipped Elkhart Memorial, 107-65, in a non-conference meet inElkhart. Depth was the key to the Warriors’ win as no Warrior won more than one individual event. Only Brad Smith and Eric Hood competed in two winning races, one being the opening 200 medley relay. x In the relay, the pair joined with Paul Morel and Brian Neff for a 1:47.4 time and championship. Wawasee took second in the event to pull away from the Blue Blazers from the start. Smith’s individual victory came in the 50-yard freestyle. The senior finished in 22.24, setting a new Wawasee record. Hood, meanwhile, captured the 100 butterfly race. “I was surprised he got the record,” said Wawasee coach Tim Caldwell. “I didn’t realize he set the record until after it was over and I looked at the time. He really moved.” f Other Wawasee winners Dave Keener, scoring 269.0 in the diving competition. Keener, last week, set a new Wawasee record with his 289 score. Mark Rich won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.5, while Matt

GOSHEN — Brooks Koble scored 20 points, 16 in the second half, powering Grace past Goshen, 95-69, in a Mid Central Conference men’s basketball game. The win, coupled with Marian’s 91-82 loss at Bethel, moved Grace into sole possession of first place in the MCC with a 5-0 mark. The Lancers’ overall record is 19-3. Goshen, 5-15 overall and 0-4 in the conference, stayed with the league-leader for one half. But Koble led an early Grace surge in the second half, which produced a

Mark My Words

(Continued from page 8) teams with exceptional athletes. Quite honestly, Grace’s 1988 squad is not the most talented basketball team assembled by coach Jim Kessler. It has some very good players, but championship level, that’s questionable. Perhaps the Lancers are winners because of the - league they participate in — Mid Central Conference. Grace has dominated the hardwood since Tri-State pulled out of the MCC seven years ago. The Lancers show no signs of relinquishing their dominance in the near future. Maybe Grace is luckier than good. That’s possible, but it’s hard to believe the Lancers could be fortunate enough to link six lucky championship seasons together. Just in case you think I’m knocking Grace’s program, thirik again. I believe in Grace College and its basketball program — that should be obvious with my comments here. What sets Grace apart from the other conference schools is coaching philosophy and direction. While other conference members have changed coaches, Grace has stood firm with Kessler. Huntington and Goshen have changed coaches with regularity, seeking the right man to bring success to their institutions. the two remain doormats in the conference, although they are showing some life. Perhaps they are tired of getting walked on by Grace. Only Bethel and Marion have enjoyed some success during

Kessler’s reign at Grace. Still, neither have won, or shared a MCC title with the Lancers’ mentor. What sets Kessler apart from other coaches is his commitment to the institution, players and values. This is evident by the way he recruits and the players he desires to see in Scarlet and White. & More times than not, Kesster recruits quality kids. Basketball is important to the coach, but not at the expense fringing on his personal values, also shared by the school. The present squad has a unique personality — they care about each other. There are no allAmericans on the team, just hard-working, dedicated basketball players. Those combinations equal success. Kessler knows it is much easier to win when everyone plays together. He has experienced that feeling for many years, in fact, six straight. I wouldn’t be surprised if number seven is one month away. Correction Some Mail-Journal readers enjoyed a laugh last week when reading about Grace College’s 103-80 victory over Bethel College. In some papers, Myron Clark’s photograph appeared in the sports section and was identified as Brooks Koble. After spotting the error, presses were shut down and Koble’s picture was inserted. Approximately two-thirds of the newspapers had Clark’s picture instead of Koble’s. Koble scored 18 points in the Lancers’ lopsided win.
