Father draws technical foul from city government

People tend to fight over the silliest issues. Case in point is the present struggle between a Birmingham, Mich., father and his local city government. The affluent Detroit suburb’s brass are calling a technical foul on Thomas Duff for erecting a basketball pole and goal alongside his driveway. An ordinance in the city prohibits such an act. Mark My Words M \RK WEINSTEIN O" |7 w I thought I had seen everything until hearing about this senseless story. It’s absurd, unfortunately, though, true. Duff installed the pole and goal for his nine-year-old son, Eddie, in July. Soon thereafter, Birmingham officials received complaints about the structure and ordered it taken down. Duff refused to go to the sidelines without a struggle. He appealed the ruling before the city commissioners, only to get the ordinance upheld. Duff vows to put pressure on Birmingham’s city government to have the ruling changed. Duff’s pressure appears to be far greater than any half-court trap witnessed in college basketball. The problem with such an ordinance is the only loser in this case is Eddie. When the pole and goal were installed, the little basketball player dreamt of being a future Isiah Thomas or Larry Bird. Both are positive role models according to today’s standards.

But it appears that Birmingham officials are more concerned with aesthetics than a child’s upbringing. This event could have a negative impact on the young Duff. It’s a shame Eddie is not allowed to shoot hoops in his driveway. Chalk another one up to progress. □ Being a Grace College basketball player certainly has its advantages. The Lancers have not only been consistent winners, but take extravagant winter vacations. The Lancers departed Winona Lake’s wintry conditions Monday for the Great Bahamas Goombay Shootout, an eight-day basketball-ministry trip. Grace opens play in the tournament New Year’s Day and conclude the trip Tuesday, Jan 12, against St. Thomas. In between playing and traveling, the players and coaches will minister at several Grace Brethren Churches in Florida. The Lancers return to Indiana Saturday, Jan. 16, for their Mid Central Conference opener at Marion. Grace has won the conference six straight years. Bahamas with the Lancers. □ Wawasee’s boys’ basketball teams opens the second half of the basketball season with great expectations. The Warriors stumbled through the first eight games with two wins. The Warriors have struggled because of a seemingly lack of cohesion. Instead of playing as a unit, the players have moved in different directions. Hopefully, the mid-season break cured Wawasee’s ailment. As the second half nears, two Wawasee players are scoring in double figures. Matt Dick, the Warriors’ sixth man most of the season, leads the team with a 12.7 point per game average Darin Atwood adds a 10.6 scoring norm, although the senior guard played with an nagging injury the last three games. Dick has paced the Warriors’ attack the last three games, scoring 58 points (19.3 average). The pair needs to continue their scoring in the second half if the Warriors hope to be successful. □ Homer Miller continues to lead the pack of sports experts as 1987 comes to an end. The pressroom technician holds a two-game lead over Mark Weinstein and fourgame bulge over Mark Huffman and Dale Tobias. Derk Kuhn brings up the rear, five gainea off the pace. In the final week of 1987, the panel has opted for a combination of professional football and high school basketball games to predict. In the two NFL wild card games, Seattle plays at Houston and Minnesota visits New Orleans. On the high school basketball level, Fairfield opens the Goshen Holiday tourney against Northridge. Goshen follows against North Wood, with the winners playing Wednesday for the title. The games were selected Monday afternoon, prior to the start of the tournament. of the game. The post player added a pair of blocked shots and rebounds, giving the Raiders a much-needed spark. Still, the game went to the wire. Trailing by three, 59-56, Fairfield went the length of the court of the potential game-tying bucket. Brian Bechtel, the team’s best three-point shooter, rattled the ball around the rim before Brian Miller rebounded the shot. Miller, quickly, raced to the three-point line and fired a desperation shot at the buzzer. The attempt nearly went in, rimming around the cylinder as the final horn sounded. Gary Zimmerman led the Raiders’ attack with 20 points, seven below his average. Baer added 14 points and VonGunten chipped in 10.
