Harriet Haley is the cookie lady
I By DEB PATTERSON | Staff Writer It all started 42 years ago in Schererville. She would bake cookies every afternoon, while the kids were in school. Mrs. Grummer is credited for Harriet Haley’s yearly Christmas cookie baking. “I’ve never stopped, even when I was working. I baked after I got home until way late.” This 77-year-old woman, residing at Papakeechie Lake, bakes an average of 2,500 cookies each year .plot just one kind, but all flavors and shapes. There are peanut butter blossoms, her family’s favorite; pressed cookies; chocolate dipped; dates rolled in coconut; melting moment cookies and more.

% She didn’t always bake so many cookies. Harriet commented when she started the baking, it was mostly for her kids and Mrs. Grummer’s children. They would buy the ingredients and then divide what was made between the two families. Then she started baking cookies to take when her family went home for Christmas during World War 11. The giving expanded. Cookies were sent to work with her husband Robert. She would give cookies to co-workers. Friends and neighbors, as well as family members always received cookies each year. “Even when I worked I made 1.500 cookies,” commented Harriet. The demand gets greater each year. This year she started “awful early” in baking her cookies. Harriet remarked she doesn’t usually start baking until December 1. There was a special reason for starting early this year. Her granddaughter, Jan Groves, was getting married and over 1,000 cookies were to be made for the wedding on December 19. Over 4,048 Cookies Each year HarrieLkeeps a log or notebook on how many cookies she makes a day and the varieties. Once the cookies are baked, they

GIVING COOKIES FOR 42 YEARS — Harriet Haley. Papakeechie Lake, has been baking cookies for the past 42 years. These cookies are not just for her two children, five grandchildren or six great-grandchildren. She bakes cookies each Christmas to give to ■ friends, neighbors and relatives. This year Harriet has made a total of 4,048 cookies, 3,047 of which she has given away. The remaining 1,001 cookies were made for her granddaughter’s wedding December 19. (Photo by r»eh Patterson) are stored. She then looks over her records and when she gets the number she thinks is needed, out come the cookies.

“I set all the containers out on the table and then box them,” commented Harriet. If one was to visit the Haley house on this day, one would find every available space filled with containers of cookies. This year, as of December 19, Harriet had made 4,048 codties, 3,047 of which were given away. She noted she doesn’t bake every day. “I do it when I can,” she said, adding it is usually during the morning hours. In her record book for this year, the largest number of cookies made on one day was 544. Harriet gave a word of warning to any one who might try and do this. “Don’t any one try this unless she has a generous husband who iikes to buy lots of chocolate and sugar.” She also warned not to bake that many cookies unless your husband understands the light bill also. “I enjoy it,” she remarked adding “in the first place you have to like to bake cookies, because it makes a mess and you always have to do dishes.” Why cookies and not something else? “Cookies have less sugar than cake, ’ ’ she noted. Despite keeping a log of how many cookies she makes, she does not keep track of the money spent or the time. “I don’t want to know,” she commented about the money, noting she starts looking for butter on sale early. There is a sad note, at least for those who are recipients of her cookies. “This just might be my last year,” commented Harriet, adding it seems like it is getting harder all the time. Yet when next fall comes she may have a change of heart. “When the time comes the fever may hit me.” Harriet and her husband have been residing at Papakeechie Lake for the past 13 years. She is originally from Monument City, which was flooded out 32 years ago. She worked for 20 years at General Tire in Wabash, retiring in 1966. There are other things Harriet enjoys doing. She enjoys doing hand work such as embroidery, and working in the yard in summer. She also enjoys the one day a week the two take go somewhere. ■ Their home on Papakeechie Lake is a retirement home, not a lake cottage; Built from scratch for just two people. The Haleys, who have been married since 1929, have two children: Reba Groves, Lancaster; and Bill Haley, Warren. They also have five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
