Letters to the editor
Why we should be interested
Dear Editor: Rev. Florent Toirac of Spanish World Gospel Mission, Winona Lake lists six reasons why we should be fully interested in the political events now happening in Central America, especially Nicaragua. Rev. Toirac should know the conditions in that area since he was born and raised in Cuba. I am taking the liberty to use these six reasons in this little write-up. I am sure he would be pleased that others may read it and do some thinking on the subject. These are the six reasons for our concern: 1. The Soviets have a large number of advisors in the area.
Lending a helping hand
Dear Editor: A little girl peers out of a poster and says “Thanks. You saved my life.” No words I can add say more than that. Those who gave blood, and those who gave money to the American Red Cross, joined those who provided service in touching thousands of lives like this last year. And as long as there are disasters, as long as there is hemophilia, the need will remain. Lending a helping hand is what the Red Cross is about, and your financial assistance makes it possible. Perhaps we may even help you, as you help the Red Cross. This year.l9B7, is a critical one for tax planning. The W-4 chore was the tip of the iceberg. Though tax rates are moving down, you
Wawasee not the leader
Dear Editor: Following the scurrilous editorial which appeared in The Mail-Journal several weeks ago concerning the remuneration afforded the Wawasee Superintendent of Schools, which took exception to the increase in salary and inclusion of an auto, I offer a copy of an article published in the December 16,1987, edition of the South Bend Tribune (page B7). To summarize, the Penn-Harris-Madison Superintendent receives a $70,600 salary (retroactive to June 30,1987) plus . . . “a rental car, car insurance, gasoline and car maintenance, and repair...” Further, “the school corporation reimburses (the superintendent) for all other expenses incurred in the service of, or for the benefit of the school corporation.” The subject editorial cast aspersions by asking if our school board intended to be the leader in
Christmas is the time of miracles
Why does the world never become tired of hearing the Christmas Story? Why do the children’s eyes glow as they reenact the manager scene? Why do parents never get bored with the same skit seeing their little “angel” or “shepherd” give adoration to the Babe? Why? Because the Star of the

2. There is being poured into Nicaragua billions of dollars in Soviet weaponry, including gun ships, tanks, rocket launchers, and ammunition, etc. 3. Cuban troops are fighting in Nicaragua for the Communist Sandinista government. 4. There are in that area military advisors from East Germany training the Sandinista armies. 5. North Koreans are training the Sandinista Secret Police. 6. The worldwide terrorists are making their headquarters in Managua, the capital of that country. Rev. Toirac goes on to say, “BEWARE OF THE CONTRARY PROPAGANDA FROM
may find that you have lost numerous deductions. The decrease, if any, in your tax rate may not match the loss of many deductions you’ve relied upon. One deduction may benefit you , as you lend a helping hand to the x Red Cross. If you itemize, the income tax deduction for a charitable gift is one of the few legitimate shelters that remain. Since you’ll likely be at a lower rate when the rate cuts take full effect, next year, a gift now will bring a greater deduction than the same gift will after December 31. Could you consider giving both you ’B7 and ’BB gifts this year? It will likely cost you less and will certainly help us more. Finally, if you hold stocks that have risen significantly in value, you should know that the tax you

‘DOVE POLITICIANS’”. I can add this: “There is not only political propaganda, many seemingly religious people take the side of the Reds and blame the United States for the troubles beyond our southern border! That is too bad! Yes, that is a shame! Creeping Communism isn’t the only evil that confronts us. We could list many tools that are as sharp and pointed in the ol’ Devil’s workshop. He is on call any hour day and night! Often he calls uninvited as well! Which is America’s most deadly sin? That is debatable. Clayton Mock 712 N. Huntington Syracuse
must pay when you sell is way up. But if you make a gift of some of that stock, neither you nor we pay any tax on the appreciation, and you will receive a deduction for /the full market value on the day of your gift. A note or call to us will bring you more information, without obligation. You are a friend ... a friend of the Red Cross and of those who most need us. Perhaps these few words provide a helpful consideration. It would delight me if they helped you, as you continue to help the Red Cross. Thank you for the joy you bring to this holiday season. heading and did not disguise itself as news. We would be remiss if a position was never taken on the matter, considering the strong feelings exhibited and the public money involved. Editorials show the newspaper’s position on various matters, just as your “letter to the editor” states your opinion. We realize everyone won't agree with every editorial written, otherwise there would be no drunk drivers on the road after last week’s editorial. As far as being “scurrilous,” we went back and read the editorial and found no “vulgar or low abusive language” (re: The American Heritage Dictionary) in existence. Finally, we’ve always felt that differences in school sizes and superintendent seniority should also be considered when wages are set (Wawasee is a 3A school while Penn is SA). ?•&&&&&&&

Like many small neighborhood schools this one is gone. To the pupils who studiously sat in the seats and played on the playground it is forever there in happy memories. The above photo, taken in i»i4, is of the students of the Vawter School.
