Popular class held at First Brethren Church
(By GLEN LONG Staff Writer Included in the Sunday school program at the First Brethren Church of Milford is a popular class, the Christian Workers Class, which is attended by nearly 40 young adults, both singles and married couples, every Sunday morning. The pastor’s wife, Judy Tinkel, teaches this interesting class and commented, “This is a group you just fall in love with and look forward to being with.” She said the class began in January, 1980, with two couples and has grown steadily in number ever since.

“We meet in Myers Auditorium in our fellowship hall every Sunday because we outgrew our classroom,” she said. “The possibility of the group splitting into two classes, singles and marrieds, has been discussed but because of the fine fellowship and interest of those attending, this is not planned. ” Judy said the class members, who range in age from just out of high school to 40 years, have the energy and dedication to justify the class name, Christian Workers. Among the service projects they work at each year is the collection of non-perishable foodstuffs to be given to needy

families. They also conduct dime drives to help finance their humanitarian projects and rush in with assistance for local area families who have disasters such as home fires. Along with its projects to help others, the class schedules various social activities throughout the year. Sometimes they go bowling, have an occasional movie night and during warm weather have at least two overnight trailer camp-outs each year. The class members occasionally provide special music at the church during morning worship. Mark and Lee Ann Baumgartner have been in the class since 1984. Mark commented that they like the friendly social atmosphere in the group. “It is a caring atmosphere in which you have the feeling of being wanted and needed,” he said, “it gives you the opportunity to share with your classmates in helping others.” Lisa Shoemaker, who has been in the class with her husband, Robert, for about eight months, agreed that one really feels a part of the group. She added that everyone gets along very well and there is a feeling of family, possibly because there are several family groups included. “I like the class because we have an excellent teacher and have a chance to experience the joy of helping others,” said Richard Rhodes. “Judy doesn’t just lecture. She makes us participate and this keeps if interesting. Our church has really found the right combination for a worthwhile Sunday school experience.”

Husband and wife team working together for God
I By GLEN LONG Staff Writer Northern Lakes Christian Church, with services in the Palace of Sports in North Webster, has as co-pastors, Thorpe and Karen Mitchell, who are husband and wife. The two pastors were ordained at a joint ceremony on August 23, 1985, by Lester Sumrail, well-known TV preacher who has a church in South Bend. Both pastors talk excitedly about the direction their lives have taken in God’s service. Thorpe candidly states, “In late 1977, when we came to Kosciusko County to live it was largely because we had our house at Tippecanoe Lake. We did not know what direction our lives would take. When we started attending church at First Presbyterian Church in Warsaw, it was the

first time we’d been in a church in 16 yeai-s. It’s obvious to us now that we were meant to be there.” “I was saved in that church,” interjected Karen enthusiastically, “In special meetings held by Jim Cunnihan.” Thorpe said the three years of 1979 through 1981 were the most difficult years of their careers. “The problem was that we were trying to find out what to do with the rest of our lives. We both wanted to give ourselves to something worthwhile. The more we got into it the more we realized we wanted to work for God full-time.” “We came to realize that there are only two ways to serve God and make a living doing it. One is to work for someone else as pastor of an existing church and the second is to start a church.” From this realization came the beginning of Northern Lakes

Christian Church. While Thorpe is still involved in his job of piloting Lester Sumrail around the country and is only home part of the time, Karen is now involved full-time in the work of the church. “It’s not easy to work together,” said Karen, “In the church as well as in the home. I feel called of the Lord to be in the church. I do most of the church management because I have most of the available time. In addition to keeping membership rolls and other records and paying bills, I am much involved in teaching, preaching and the music of our church.” Karen and Thorpe agreed that while some people have a hard time with the concept of a woman minister, a woman in a leadership position, they have both learned to keep their joint ministry in proper perspective and look with faith to the future.

Reconciliation and rejoicing!
IBy Marietta Fuller Guest Writer At this special season of the year when we celebrate Christ’s birth, there is a great deal of love shown throughout the land; but this cannot be so if we are holding any grievance against a brother. The Bible says, “Therefore, if thou bring thy gift to the altar and there remembereth that thy brother have aught against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar and go thy way, first to be reconciled to thy brother and then come and offer thy gift.” (Matthew 5:23-24). Matthew Henry says that “religious exercises are not acceptable to God if they are performed when we are in wrath, malice and uncharitableness (not in love). God will have reconciliation made with an offended brother before the gift be offered.” In other words, you cannot offer God anything while in sin, either love or money for Him or love for your neighbor. You are dead spiritually as long as this sin persists and are also in danger of judgement, for God judges sin. Though a person speaks words of love, such as “I love you,” it is as “a tinkling cymbal,” though he gives money to the poor, feeds the hungry and ministers to those in need; and has not charity or love (because he has aught against his brother) it profiteth nothing (ICor. 13:1,3).
Sounds of Hope to sing in Syracuse Dec. 31
The Sounds of Hope Alumni Association’s United States Concert Tour will end this year with a concert at Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 7:30 p.m Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Under the direction of Varner Chance, the group will begin its five day tour of concerts in Indiana and Illinois churches and nursing homes on December 27. The music and message are the same, the only changes are the locations and audiences. The reason for the Sounds of Hope Alumni American Tour is best described in the words of the Sounds of Hope theme song, “Take my hand and I’ll take yours and we’ll begin a circle of love.” Musical selections in this year’s tour will include “Blessing, Glory and Wisdom” by Bach, “0 Lord Most Holy,” “In Remembrance,” “Hallelujah

If a child of God is still unconcerned about his sin or sins against a brother, hear these words: “if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matt. 6:15). (If you are having trouble in forgiving someone, ask God or Jesus to help you.) Jesus puts it even stronger in John 15:5: “Without me, ye can do nothing.” Without being filled with the Spirit of Jesus we cannot keep the two great commandments of law of loving God and loving our neighbor, which fulfills the law. “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us” (Romans 5:5), but sin grieves Him for He cannot in-dwell us ; therefore any hard feelings against a brother means that there must be forgiveness and reconciliation. Then we ask to be filled (Ephesians 5:18, Luke 11:13 and Matthew 7:7). According to Dr. Billy Graham, we must not only ask to be filled but must show control by adding such things as “Help me to live right today,” etc. Then to be greater filled, we sing songs or speak in Psalms and thank God (Ephesians 5:18-20). So go and be reconciled with thy brother (Matthew 5:24) or call by phone or send a card, asking forgiveness and offering restitution if such be the case. There will be rejoicing in your soul and in others as well as rejoicing in heaven. Then love can reign at this Christmas season.
Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah, “No Man Is An Island” and “Sounds Os Hope.” This musical tour group consists of members of the choir , Katherine Bracy, harpist from Columbus, Ohio; several nonperformers who help with details; and Mr. and Mrs. Varner Chance, North Webster, who founded the Sounds of Hope.
