Wawasee swims past Elkhart

ELKHART — Perfection could become synonymous with Wawasee’s boys’ swimming. The Warriors kept their perfect record intact Monday, moving to 5-0, as they whipped Elkhart Central, 99-73, in a non-conference swim meet. Wawasee won seven of the 11 events, including another school record swim from Brad Smith. The Wawasee senior has set the 50-yard freestyle mark for the third time this season. “We had a lot of good times, we swam well,” said Wawasee swim • coach Tim Caldwell following the win. “We didn’t have any monster drops, but we didn’t need any. We raced well.” According to the veteran coach, Wawasee had a dozen personal best swims. Wawasee’s 200 medley relay team opened the meet with a victory. Paul Morel, Scott Rozow, Matt Fryback and Brian Neff cruised to the victory. SCOTT ROZOW Fryback added another Warrior triumph two events later in the 200 individual medley. Fryback’s 2:09.5 edged Elkhart’s Mike Hostetler and Wawasee’s David Ridings. Fryback’s win set the stage for Smith’s record-setting swim. In claiming the school record, presently at 22:58, Smith was pushed by Elkhart’s Jason Landrum and Wawasee’s Mark Rich. The Warrior finished third, giving the visitors a sizeable lead. Although Smith’s record swim proved valuable to the Warriors, perhaps the most valuable swimmer this evening was Fryback.

The consistent swimmer won his third event — 100 butterfly — as Wawasee pulled away from the Blue Blazers. Rozow finished second to Fryback in the 100 butterfly. From there, Wawasee took three of the final five events. Christer Tungard won the 500 freestyle in 5:14.4, while Scott Berkey was second. Morel added his second victory, capturing the 100 backstroke in 1:01.0. Ridings added a second place swim, giving Wawasee a cushion entering the closing events. One event later, Wawasee sealed their win. Rozow went 1:07.4 in the 100 breaststroke to win ahead of Neff. The event symbolized the Warriors’ effort — taking two of three places in each event. The only event that Elkhart Central claimed two of the top places was the 200 freestyle. David Keener added a second place finish in diving, while David Neterer was third for the Warriors Wawasee returns to action Saturday afternoon in the LaPorte Relays. The Warriors’ next home action will be Tuesday, Jan. 5. against Penn. Caldwell expects the meet with the Kingsmen to be Wawasee’s toughest competition of the young season. 'Half' Warriors sturrible against Triton, 73-64

SYRACUSE — Wawasee is learning that it’s tough winning basketball games when it plays just 16 minutes. High school basketball games were designed for 32 minutes of action. The Warriors put together a solid second half Saturday evening, but the hole they dug in the first half was too large to overcome as Triton edged Wawasee, 73-64, in a battle of two Triton Sectional foes. The game appeared to be a carbon copy of Friday’s five-point loss at Warsaw. The Warriors struggled in the first half against the Tigers, falling behind 14 at halftime, before making a run at the end. Against Triton, Wawasee spotted the Trojans an eight point lead after the first break and 16-point spread at intermission. Wawasee couldn’t recover. The Trojans used a stingy zone defense in the first half to thwart a potential inside game by the Warriors. Instead of getting high percentage shots inside the paint, Wawasee accepted the perimeter shot. “We had trouble shooting from the perimeter and their zone was packed tight so we couldn’t get the inside shot,” admitted Wawasee coach Gary Goshert after the defeat. “We started the same way last night. You have to be strong mentally to go through that kind of struggle and still execute.” Triton’s double-digit lead, however, slipped away in the opening minutes of the second half. Aided by an aggressive fullcourt press, Wawasee outscored the Trojans 9-2 in the first two minutes to close within nine, 39-30. Basil Bonner opened the scoring with a nifty one-hander inside the paint. After Triton answered

Bonner’s field goal with a Tim Shively 14-foot jump shot, Fred Steffen and Jeff Carey combined for six unanswered points. Steffen ignited the flurry with a soft eight-foot jumper along the right baseline. Carey, a lightening-quick guard, picked off two consecutive inbound passes and converted them into easy buckets. 'Die Warriors continued to slice Triton’s lead in the period, which eventually dwindled to four, 52-48, with six seconds left in the period. Defensive pressure was a key in the Warriors’ turnaround, but so was Matt Dick and Bonner’s shooting. The pair accounted for 20 of the Warriors’ 27 points in the period. Dick, who netted 12 thirdperiod points, finished with 17. Matt Koble hit five three-pointers in the game, finishing with 15 points and Bonner ended with 12, eight in the third period. With Wawasee beginning to heat up offensively in the third, the Warriors opted to keep heat on the Trojans, defensively. The strategy worked throughout the period before Wawasee ran out of gas in the fourth. Wawasee could get no closer than eight points in the final eight minutes. “The press helped us come back, just like it did last night,” said Goshert, referring to Friday’s late effort. “It definitely helped us.” Joining Dick, Koble and Bonner in double digits was Steffen. The senior center scored 10 points, his highest total since a 14-point explosion against Mishawaka. The loss drops Wawasee’s record to 2-5 entering Friday’s non-conference game at Colum-
