Socrates sets tone for Syracuse School Advisory Committee
(By MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer Adopting a phrase from Socrates, Indiana state school board member Joan McNagny set the stage for a special Syracuse School Advisory Committee meeting by declaring, “All you can hope to do is to make a little difference. ’ ’ It’s that thinking that led McNagny and Dr. John Harrold, director of curriculum for the Indiana State Department of Education, to Syracuse School last Wednesday, Dec. 9-. Speaking before nearly 40 members of the Wawasee Community, including administrators, principals of the three schools (Milford, North Webster, Syracuse), school board
High winds, light snow plague area
1 By DEB PATTERSON I Staff Writer High winds gusting at times at over 50 miles per hour could have caused more problems in the Milford, North Webster and Syracuse areas than it did Tuesday. No accidents were reported to the North Webster or Syracuse Police Departments, nor were the emergency medical services called out. The area can be considered fortunate that the heavy rain early in the day was not snow. Roads did become hazardous for driving when temperatures fell and strong winds came. For most drivers, the strong winds caused more problems than road conditions. The high winds subsided early this morning (Wednesday), giving way to snow showers. Those going to work this morning found themselves using caution, especially at curves and intersections. County road crews and town street departments ’ have been busy sanding streets. Power Out Residents of North Shore Drive in Syracuse were without electricity several times Tuesday. Officials were notified at 2:54 a.m. of the transformers blowing. Electricity was restored approximately one hour later only to have the outage again at 9:58 am. Carl Shakley, division manager for NIPSCO, stated the largest outage in the area was in Milford and was caused by a broken wire on a pole due to the wind. The outage affected approximately 200 customers on the south edge of Milford around Waubee Lake and SR 15. Customers were without electricity from 3-8:07 p.m. A lot of fuses need to be replaced. Street departments were kept busy clearing streets of downed tree limbs and in one instance a tree fell on a vehicle on South

TO RUN FOR STATE OFFICE — Ann M. Delaney, Indianapolis attorney and 1984 Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor of Indiana, has announced her candidacy for attorney general of Indiana in 1988. Delaney, 41, said •I believe my combination of public service, private law practice and campaign experience will enable me to work effectively on behalf of the people of Indiana as their attorney general.” The attorney was the first woman nominee of either party for Marion County prosecuting attorney in 1982 and was the leading Democratic vote-getter for Marion County superior court judge in an 11-candidate primary in 1984. She is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Law.

members, Syracuse SAC representatives, teachers, staff, and three Syracuse School students, the duo touted possibilities for early adolescent schooling. Before yielding the platform to Dr. Harrold, McNagny noted, “Public education is what democracy is about.” Citing the major goals of the state board of education, the board representative emphasized two goals that she insisted held special interest for the Wawasee School Corporation. Those include: Goal 2) To promote innovation in teaching and learning and, Goal 6) ensure that the public school curriculum is responsive to the needs of students. “The state board and department of education can be helpful

Economic development legislation — Indiana needs Revised Limited Partnership Act: Evan Bayh
INDIANAPOLIS - Saying that, “This will be an enduring piece of legislation that will foster business development for decades to come,” Secretary of State Evan Bayh intends to have introduced to the 1988 General Assembly a bill revising Indiana’s Uniform Limited Partnership Act. “Amending the Uniform Limited Partnership Act would enhance opportunities for economic development for our
The perfect Christmas gift for the skier who has everything
No two skiers are exactly alike. Some go for the bumpiest mogul runs while others search for verticals so steep that their skis don’t even touch the snow. Skiers don’t even look alike anymore. Gone are the days when everyone used the same skis, boots and bindings, whether they fit or not. And when it comes to clothing, today’s skiers face even more choices. Jackets, pants, insulations and fabrics are all designed to match individual tastes and needs. Technology has done wonders for the sport of downhill skiing but it has also made gift-giving more confusing, especially for non-skiers trying to pick out the perfect gift that will delight any skiing enthusiast. This holiday season, however, gift-givers can relax. Now a gift is available that all skiers like and need —a lift ticket worth one full day of skiing. In the past, you had to purchase a lift ticket for a specific day at

This holiday season, shoppers will ask the same question they always ask this time of year — what do I get for the person who’s got it all? If you’re looking for innovative new twists to some old ideas, the answer might just come from Plus U.S.A. Corporation. Already hailed as the “must have” product of the year, Plus Factory resemble a Swiss Army Knife and contains everything you need to keep you out of the office. Just imagine one pocket-size Swiss Army style tool that actually folds out to become a stapler, a one-hole punch, stainless steel scissors, a magnifying lens, a spring-loaded retractable tape measure, a stainless steel knife, a staple remover/screwdriver, and a tape dispenser with tape. There’s even a compartment for

changes — each individual is different, like a fingerprint, which is important to keep in mind,” he said after handing out various drawings of fingerprints to the audience. Hoping to see school as an “extended family”, Dr. Harrold stressed the importance of the middle school and cited various characteristics of the middle school student, including: A) Rapid change; B) New sense of self (am I normal?); C) Sorting out, thinking, forming ideas or hypothesis; D) Exploring world and ever expanding horizons; E) Seeking okay, needing approval (acquiring a new value system), and F) Seeking peer acceptance. “How you communicate with each other (as adults) sets a role for how students communicate

Universal Ski Tickets are a great way to get an entire family or group of friends outside enjoying the winter months, because people of all ages and athletic abilities love the thrill of skiing. It’s one activity that the whole family can take part in together. If everyone in the group hasn’t had the opportunity to experience skiing, the Universal Ski Ticket can still bean ideal gift. In the interest of safe skiing, it is recommended that beginners trade their Universal Ski Ticket for a group lesson and a related lift ticket that often goes with lessons.

One even has to learn how not to learn.” Drawing from a list of SAC recommendations for the new middle school, Dr. Harrold stated, “I«agree that the library should be the hub of the school, but I donHf agree that you should have aComputer room; rather, there should be computers in each classroom being used like a as a learning tool.” Noting that the Lilly Endowment Inc. of Indianapolis suggests starting school improvements in the middle grades before branching out to elemen-

simpler because it eliminates the need for continual, cumbersome changes in public records, and the document would be filed with one office — the Corporations Division of the secretary of state's office — rather than in the offices of various county recorders as the current law requires," he explained. Other significant advantages under RULPA would: ‘Preserve the tax status of limited partnerships; ‘Allow a limited partner to render services as a contribution in Ijeu of more traditional forms of considerations; ‘Permit voting privileges to be granted on a per capita or other basis; ‘Allow the merger and consolidation of domestic and foreign limited partnerships, and; ‘Provide for the registration by the secretary of state’s office of foreign limited partnerships (those outside of Indiana) seeking to do business in Indiana. Bayh said he will ask legislators who are members of the General Corporation Law Study Commission to sponsor the Revised Uniform Limited Partnership Act. “Members of the commission tentatively agreed in July that Indiana needs a Revised Uniform Limited Partnership Act, and I expect the commission to give its final approval for the legislation next week." he said.
tary and high schools, Dr. Harrold concluded, “I believe you are ahead of the game — you are doing that.” Jews to celebrate Hanukkah "You shall have no other gods beside Me. You shall not make for yourself a sculptured image — You shall not bow down to them or serve them.” — The Torah When Jewish people arountfthe world gather between December 16-23 to celebrate the eight days of Hanukkah or Feast of Lights, they are marking the anniversary of the re-dedication of the Temple at Jerusalem in 167 BCE (Before the Christian Era) after its desecration by Syrian invaders. But the deeper meaning of the holiday can be found within their Torah, a collection of books and wisdom and law. Among the rare and special books in the Lilly Library at Indiana University is a 19th century copy of the Torah. In its chapters, which include writings about the Jewish leader, Moses, are the Ten Commandments of the book of Exodus. In the lighting of candles in the eight-branch candelabra called the Menorah, the Jews not only mark the re-dedication of Hanukkah or Feast of Lights. Jewish lore is rich in stories of heroism during that turbulent period. There is the story of the seven sons of Hannah — ages three to 15 years — whom Antiochus tried to coerce into bowing before the statue of Zeus. Each of the boys, remembering the first two commandments, refused and was killed by the ruler’s soldiers. After the loss of her youngest and last son, Hannah cried out before her death, “Abraham, Father Abraham! Behold, you have built one altar for your son; but I have this day seven altars. You were only tried, and your son spared; but I was tried and my seven sons were sacrificed. O Lord! Into your hands I now trust my soul also.” Contemporary celebrations of Hanukkah include games, songs, special dishes and the inevitable re-telling of stories of the courage of the Jews of 167 BCE. One story, written by a British Jewish educator, Joseph Halpern, is imagined excerpts from the diary of the grandson of a Greek officer at the time of Antiochus. The final entry says, “Antiochus IV is dead. He died in Persia, and reports say that on his deathbed he confessed that all the miseries that had come upon him in the last few years were due to the fact that he had plundered the Temple of the Jews at Jerusalem and had tried to dishonor their God.”
