Building gift to Zion chapel
I By GLEN LONG I Staff Writer The old schoolhouse south of Syracuse, now known as the House of Friendship and longer ago as the Guy Schoolhouse, was recently donated to Zion Chapel United Brethren Church by its owners, Bud and Edith Watkins. The solid brick building sits across Syracuse-Webster Road from Zion Chapel, which will continue to use it for Sunday school classes and family reunions as it has for many years. Ida Bell Strieby and James Dewart owned the building in 1931, after it was no longer used as a school. In 1938 Dewart deeded the property to Mrs. Strieby. Bethel members go caroling On Saturday evening, Dec. 12, 35 children and adults from Bethel Church of the Brethren in Milford enjoyed going caroling. Places visited were Lakeland Loving Care Center and eight other residences including one in Syracuse. The group was transported by a bus driven by Herb Reuter. After the caroling tour, a chili supper, sponsored by the Shalom class, was served.

Her estate left it to her daughter, Moscalene Strieby Deaton, who willed it to Bud and Edith Watkins. Eldon Clayton, North Webster, remembers the building when it was a school, having attended school there in grades one through four, beginning in 1919. He said while he was there the “kids from Vawtor Park” were transferred to the school, swelling the enrollment to about 20 students. “I’m glad the bld school can still be used,” he said. “It’s a landmark of the past. My initials can still be seen in a brick on the back of the building.” Teachers who taught Clayton at the school were Sherm Deaton, Virgil Mock, Alma Plew and Lottie House. “The building was heated by a wood stove,” he said. “When you went out io the rest room you had to bring back a stick of wood. I earned a dollar a week while in the fourth grade by sweeping out the school every afternoon and starting the fire in the morning.” Clayton said he and his brother and sister, Fred Clayton and Lucy Rogers walked a mile to "I will give thee thanks in the great congregation.’' - Psalm 35:18
