Concord whips Warriors, 66-46; Kemp, Johnson lead Minutemen
SYRACUSE — Concord's defense was the difference Friday evening as the Minutemen corrected their first half defensive deficiencies to pull away from Wawasee, 66-46. in a Northern Lakes Conference clash at Wawasee. The Warriors played inspired basketball during the first 16 minutes, staying with the sixthrated Minutemen. But the second half was a different story as Concord dominated play en route to the lopsided win. "We went to a different defense in the second half and the kids did a nice job," admitted Concord s Jim Hahn. "Wawasee was able to move the ball where it wanted in

Second quarter power outage drops Warriors
ELKHART — The second period continues to be a major problem for Wawasee’s girls’ basketball team. The Warriors. 0-4, stumbled through the second quarter Monday evening, scoring just four points, and the poor performance proved costly as Elkhart Central edged Wawasee, 42-39, at Central. The Warriors outscored the host Blue Blazers in every quarter except the second. In the pivotal period, Central whipped the Warriors, IM, to hold a 22-13 halftime edge. “We have to do something about the second quarter,’’ said a frustrated Wawasee head coach Dale Brannock. “That's the third straight game that this has happened. It is really frustrating” After the poor second period, the Warriors came back to challenge Elkhart in the second half. Wawasee closed within six, 31-25, entering the final quarter but could get no closer than two in the closing minutes. The Warriors’ final chance to win, or send the game into overtime, ended when Elkhart Central hit one of two free throws with one second left in the contest. Lai Reed paced Wawasee’s offensive attack with 14 points and four steals. Bobi Stookey added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Amy Barton chipped in with four assists for Wawasee. “The loss was disappointing because we thought we could get them,” admitted Brannock “But, positively, Reed and Stookey played very well. When the chips were down, they came through. ”
the first half and we can’t let that happen. We have to deny the ball.” That’s exactly what Concord’s defense did. denied the Warriors from moving the ball and having good scoring chances. The third quarter switch gave the Minutemen the first seven points and the win. The seven-point spurt gave Concord a 37-25 lead hnd command of the game. The Warriors could get no closer than eight points as Concord dominated’ the action. Although Concord enjoyed the 20-point win. W’awasee gave the visitor's more of a challenge than what the score indicates.
Although Wawasee played the Blue Blazers evenly throughout the game, the hosts won the game at the charity stripe. Central canned 20 of 31 freebies (65%), while the Warriors shot 50% 'eight of 16). Goshen slams Wawasee
SYRACUSE — Lessons learned can often be painful ones Wawasee’s wrestling team learned a valuable lesson Tuesday evening as Goshen embarrassed the Warriors, 50-11, in a Northern Lakes Conference wrestling match. The loss dropped the Warriors' season mark to 7-3. More importantly, Wawasee fell to 1-2 in the NLC. “We have a lot of work ahead of us,” insisted Wawasee Dave" VanLue after the disappointing performance. “It is going to hard, now, to win the conference.” Wawasee could manage just two victories against the Redskins. Eliseo Roa and Garrett Ponciroli wrestled well, but the
* Concord’s a good club, they have a lot of weapons, both offensively and defensively,” said Wawasee’s Gary Goshert. “If I had known they would only score 66 points, I would have thought we’d be in position to win.” After a slow start; which allowed Concord to hold a 16-11 first period lead, Wawasee stayed with the Minutemen in the second eight minutes. The Warriors eventually evened the score, the last time at 25-all, before the Minutemen closed the quarter with five straight points. As expected, Shawn Kemp led the Minutemen’s offensive assault with 27 points. He added

duo had no support from the rest of the squad. “We practiced all week for what Goshen would do, but it didn’t help,” admitted VanLue. “I don’t know how much more we cap be prepared for an opponent?” Wawasee’s program took another step backwards this week when Bob Doerr, one of the Warriors’ premier wrestlers quit the team. 11 rebounds, six blocked shots and three steals to the winning cause. But Kemp was not a one-man show. Instead, he gained valuable offensive assistance from sophomore Jamar Johnson, who scored 17 points. Kemp dominated Concord’s first half scoring, netting 19. In the second half, Johnson paced the attack, scoring 14. Despite the Minutemen’s balanced scoring attack, Goshert felt his defense played well. “I don’t think our defense let our defuse let us down. We ex ecuteq ijfell,” insisted Goshert “The game just got away from us in the second half with turnovers.” For the Warriors, who stumbled to 1-3 for the season and 0-1 in the NLC, Matt Dick was the scoring star. The junior came off the bench to net 11 points, including one three-pointer. Darin Atwood, who hit the first shot of the game —a threepointer — finished with nine points, while Basil Bonner grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Fred Steffen scored eight points, grabbed one rebound and added a blocked shot. With Bonner controlling the boards. Wawasee outrebounded the taller Minutemen, 35-26. However, the Warriors had 20 turnovers, compared to Con cord’s 12. The Minutemen also held the upper hand in field goal shooting, hitting 52.6% from two point range. Wawasee managed just 36% two-point accuracy. Concord hit three-of-six three pointers, while Wawasee hit two-of-six. Concord enjoyed a more productive evening on the charity stripe, hitting 17 of 24 shots for 71%. The Warriors shot 86%.

Warriors breeze to Goshen Relays win
GOSHEN — Six first place swims and a second place effort proved enough as Wawasee’s boys’ swim team breezed to the Goshen Relays championship Saturday in Goshen. The Warriors amassed 116 points to win easier than expected. Warsaw and Penn shared second place honors, each scoring 82 points. Northern Lakes foe, Concord, was fourth with 68 points, while North Wood was fifth at 44, and Goshen, sixth, with 32 points. “We knew we had to swim well to win,” admitted Wawasee - coach Tim Caldwell after the meet. “I told the team that we could even swim well and finish third. That didn’t go over very well with them. They wanted first place.” The Warriors opened slowly, placing third in the 200-yard medley relay. But after the meetopening event, Wawasee dominated. Warsaw won the opener in 1:42.91. The Warriors’ Paul Morel, Scott Rozow, Mat!

missing just one of their seven attempts. Wawasee did not go to the foul line in the second half. In other Wawasee action over the weekend, the Warriors rebounded from Friday’s disappointment to whip Prairie Heights, 64-45. Atwood paced Wawasee’s attack with 11 points, while Dick added 10. The win raised the Warriors’ mark to 2-3 overall and gives them momentum heading into Friday’s Northern Lakes Conference showdown at Warsaw. The Tigers are winless, 0-4, after losing to Goshen Saturday. In Friday's preliminary game, Wawasee saw its three-game win streak snapped as the young Minutemen blasted the Warriors, 48-39. Fryback and Brian Neff finished in 1:45.15. Wawasee, then, quickly moved to the front of the pack. Mark Rich, Eric Hood, Christer Tungard and Brad Smith went 3:26.54 in the 400 freestyle relay for a two-second victory over Concord. The first place swim moved the Warriors into a first place tie with Warsaw. The deadlock at the top seesawed between the Northern Lakes Conference rivals — Wawasee and Warsaw. The Warriors took sole possession of first after the 200-yard breaststroke relay, but the Tigers evened the score one event later. In the Crescendo relay, Warsaw took first place as Nate Koehlinger, Eric Mohler, Paul Deming, Peter Dyba Jeff Janda and Tyler Nichols finished in 2:30.42. The Warriors’ third place effort (Thad Dubois, Steve McDaniel, Hood, David Ridings, Scott Berkey and Vince Koser) pushed the eventual winner into a tie with the Tigers with six events remaining. But the Warriors dominated the action thereafter, taking five-of-the-next-six first places. Dave Keener and Dave Neterer won the diving relay with a 221.30 score. Keener registered a 127.80 score and Neterer culminated the win with a 93.50 score. Goshen’s Jason Pyles proved to be the best diver on the day, scoring 133.75 points. The Redskins, however, finished second in the event to Wawasee. After the Warriors’ fourth place finish in the 350-yard freestyle relay, Caldwell’s squad put the meet away with three consecutive victories. Matt Fryback, Rozow, Hood and Smith edged Warsaw’s Shane Diffendarfer, Kenton Hoppas, Rory Callaghan and Chad Twombly. Both teams finished in 1:41.05, but the Warriors squeaked out the come-from-behind win by an eyelash. The event proved to be the final blow for the Tigers, sending the Warriors to the championship. the race to nose out North Wood. Rich, who entered the poof trailing, caught the Panthers’ Nate Lelle at the final turn and sprinted to the victory. The final event, the 400 individual medley, was academic for the Warriors. Nevertheless, Wawasee benefitted from a strong performance from Rozow, Fryback, Tungard and Smith to edge Penn. Wawasee won the IM with a 3:57.46 time, barely ahead of Penn’s 3:57.71 clocking. The victory, although a relay meet, was very important to Wawasee. The Warriors faced stiff competition — Penn and Warsaw — and looked for the meet to build confidence. “The guys needed to win a meet like this,” said Caldwell, who’s teams the last three years have not beaten Warsaw. “I think the guys were tired of finishing second to Warsaw.
