Ginni and Bill Xanders visit world's largest Gold Buddha
(EDITOR’S NOTE: This report on BANGKOK, THE CITY OF ANGELS, is the second article sent The Mail-Journal by Ginni and Bill Xanders of Syracuse on their tour of the Orient. Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and is beset with jewelry stores, most of the gems coming from Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon. Their article speaks for itself. They wrote this article in their Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok.) 2:30 P.M. Bangkok time, Monday, Nov. 9, 1987 — We are here! The view from our picture window on the 11th floor is something. On one side are large old apartment buildings crowded full of poor struggling people, and on the other is the Chao Phraya River, busy with all sorts of boat traffic, from barges, ferries, houseboats*?), and the ever present junks. Our guide, a personable young man called Jonathan, met us at the airport and will join us in the lobby tomorrow morning for a tour of some of the famous temples that

Research in neighboring states to be easier
I By DORIS McMANIS CAMDEN We are fortunate that in Kosciusko County and in Indiana in general most vital records can be searched by the genealogist. There have been problems with research in Ohio and Illinois. In June of this year, Lura Lynn Ryan, wife of Illinois’ State Genealogical Society, wrote that Sen. John Davidson (RSpringfield) sponsored a bill to allow public access to Illinois vital records. This would authorize the Illinois State Archives and other libraries approved by the Illinois State Registrar and the director of the Archives to provide public access to reproductions of birth records, 100 years or older and death records, 50 years or older. This information is on file with the State Office of Vital Records. Copies would be made at no cost to the state. In June, the bill had successfully passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly and only required Governor Thompson’s signature to become law. Let’s hope he signed. Please let me know if you read about this. The Athens County Chapter of Ohio Genealogical Society is gathering data about the accessibility of public records in Ohio. If you have had difficulty in gaining access, have been compelled to purchase a certified copy instead of a non-certified record or have been charged an unrealistic amount for a copy, write to Elizabeth Smith, 41640 Carsey Rd., Albany, Ohio 45710, phone 614-698-3495. “The rule in Ohio is that public records are the people’s records, and that the officials in whose custody they happen to be are merely trustees for the people.” All records are public except medical, adoption, probation and parole, trial preparation records and confidential law in-

we have only hard of in the past. The afternoon is ours, for a bit of walking around, and early to bed. 8:45 P.M. Tuesday, Nov. 10 — Bill is sound asleep — and should be, after a day to remember. The first stop was the temple — Wat Traimit — which contains the largest solid gold buddha in the world — s*/4» tons! It was cast 700-800 years ago, and later covered with stucco for protection from enemy marauders until some cracking revealed the true worth in May, 1955! The second stop — Wat Pho — is the second largest, but most famous, image of the Reclining Buddha. It is now being restored with great care. Each tiny gold leaf or piece of multi-colored crystal is positioned by hand. Wat Benchamabophit, the marble temple was our third stop. This shows a much more modern art of Thailand, with a slight Western influence. It is made completely of Italian Carara marble. I saw the replica of the Phra Phutthachinarat buddha image, which is awesome in its beauty,

Gifts of athletic footwear
Just saying the word “Christmas” evokes images of glittering decorations, bright red and green gift packages, the smell of pine and home-baked cookies, and that wonderful warm feeling that you get deep inside when you give someone you love a gift. This year, why not give a friend or relative the “gift of exercise and good health” with athletic shoes! “Men’s, women’s and children’s athletic shoe sales explode at holiday time. After all, who wouldn’t want or couldn’t use a new, good quality pair of athletic shoes?” said Floyd Huff, senior vice president and general manager of Foot Locker and Lady Foot Locker, the largest athletic retailer in the U.S. Choosing Athletic Shoes Reebok, Nike, Avia, Saucony.. . walking, running, aerobics, tennis ... today, there are hundreds of athletic shoe brands, styles and categories to choose from. The booklet describes the unique functions of all types of athleticshoes. For example: • Kunning Shoes are made for moving in one direction only — straight ahead. Tennis shoes have strong lateral support because of the game’s rapid moves in all directions. • Walking Shoes are becoming increasing popular as walking becomes a favorite workout. Walking shoes have leather or nylon-mesh-and-leather uppers, strong heel counters, motioncontrol devices to restrict lateral movement, good cushioning — especially under the toes — and slightly elevated “step-up” heels. • Aerobics Shoes are a blend of court and running shoes. Give your favorite student a class ring for the holidays
Is the student on your holiday gift list a follower of fashion fads? If so, chances are that last year’s neon sweat suits and scarves are this year’s castaways. This Christmas, give the gift that can be worn with any fashion for years and years: A class ring. According to Art Carved Class Rings, a leading school ring manufacturer, a class ring is a symbol of achievement that’ll bring memories back to life, as well as inspiration for the future. A class ring is an important ingredient in every student’s wardrobe. And, since today’s students are more fashionconscious than ever before, today’s class rings are designed to give them the freedom of choice they deserve when selecting this special memento. For the student who is a stickler for tradition, the heavier, traditional class ring could be a perfect fit. Or, if your student prefers the dazzle of diamonds, or a distinctly contemporary look, today’s class rings come in a wide range of fashionable styles designed to meet every preference. And with the virtually unlimited personalization features available, each class ring can be custom-made to

Stocking stuffer strategies
Stuck on stocking stuffer ideas? Here’s good news: hairstyling experts have some great ideas for women of all ages that are inexpensive, easy to find, and beautiful to give. Pretty hair accessories are essential elements for both long and short hairstyles. A good color choice with this season’s elegant fashions is the timeless combination of blazing white and cool black tones. Bows are a particularly hot item this winter. A grosgrain bow, or ribbon tied in a bow can add sophistication to a sleek ponytail for daytime polish. For an extra-special holiday party style, an office-proper blunt cut can be swept off to the side and captured by a perfectly placed velvet bow behind the ear. The haircare people at Goody Products, Inc., advise decorative combs, playful pin-up clips and barrettes to round out a complete wardrobe for hair. To finish the stocking, consider inexpensive, but indispensable cosmetic accessories. These little
