Barton scores 15 but Warriors lose to Fairfield

BENTON — Wawasee’s girls’ hwsfcfthall team did everything needed to win Saturday’s season opener — except win. The Warriors took more shots and had more rebounds than Fairfield, but the boat Falcons won 52-48. Poor shooting proved to be Wawasee’s achilles bed. The Warriors canned just 22-of-63 shots from the perimeter, including one-of-two from three point range, for 34.9%. Wawasee was worse at the charity stripe, connecting on six-of-18 for 33%. “We missed enough shots, that had we made, we could have won the game going away,” suggested Wawasee’s Dale Brannock. “You just can’t shoot 33% from the foul line and expect to win.” Fairfield hit 61% of its charity tosses (17-28). The Falcons were 17-of-44 from the field for 38.6%. The Warriors opened the contest aggressively, building a 12-7 first period lead. The second quarter, a struggle for the Warriors, was the telling story. Fairfield, resembling Wawasee’s full-court press, forced the Warriors into several mistakes. The miscues were promptly turned into Fairfield points. With the defensive pressure, Fairfield quickly erased the fivepoint deficit in the period. By halftime, the Falcons held a three-point lead, 29-26 The intermission spread was

Guimond’s time also set a Wawasee school record, one she previously owned. “They came to perform,” said Wawasee head coach Tim Caldwell, referring to the four Warriors. “They dropped their times, which says something for them and their season. ’' Caldwell cited the success of the foursome to a belief in themselves “They believed in themselves, they were not in awe of the surroundings down there,” said Caldwell. “A lot of swimmers have goals the make it to state, they wanted to have their best swim in their last swim.”

Warriors open season with lopsided win

SYRACUSE — Huntington North proved to be little competition for Wawasee’s boys’ swim team as the Warriors breezed past the Vikings, 121-51, in Wawasee’s season opener. Wawasee captured nine first places in gaining the lopsided victory. “I am real happy with the win,” insisted Wawasee boys’ swim coach Tim Caldwell after the win. “Now we want to keep the ball rolling. This was good for our confidence.” Brad Smith and Mark Rich paced Wawasee’s attack with three first place swims. Paul Morel added a pair of victories as did Scott Rozow.
