etters to the editor

Dear Editor: Your article brought back fond memories of a great basketball era; and, well I remember Beaver Dam! They were everything you said they were because it was “my team” they defeated in the finals of the regional tournament at Auburn that year. It was Ligonier, not Auburn they defeated. Ligonier, a team composed of mostly freshmen and sophomore players, had upset the applecart at the Kendallville sectional coming out the winner. Their very first ever. They were given no chance whatsoever at the Auburn regional because their first opponent was the powerful state ranked Angola Hornets coached by Druckamiller. Angola had mauled the inexperienced “Fishermen” of Ligonier by

more than 20 points as I recall. Nevertheless Ligonier broke Angola’s heart and their dreams of a possible state championship by edging them by a single point sending shock waves throughout the state! Beaver Dam had a close encounter with their afternoon opponent — I can’t recall who it was — possibly Columbia City (Ed. Note: It was at Columbia City) That final game was a “dilly” and a heartbreaker for Ligonier. Both teams were evenly matched and the score never favored either team by more than two (2) points . . . three (3) at most. The score was tied as time was running out. There was a loose ball on the floor and Gene Marshall and Jack Lough (a freshman) were struggling for possession... each

on their knees trying desperately to gain control. A whistle blew! The referee called a foul on Lough. (Naturally, to this day I believe it should have been a “jump” ball.) Marshall went to the foul line and cooly sank the shot as we all knew he would. He hadn’t missed all day. In those days, after each basket, there was a center jump. Time did not allow for a shot after the center jump by either team. Beaver Dam had defeated a very young Ligonier team by a single point! (34-33) I recall all this as if it were yesterday. I was there. I was a cheerleader at that time and Jack Lough is my brother. Jack, my beloved brother, has been gone now over a decade a victim of cancer. Still remaining from that Ligonier team that I know of are Coach Ed Fisher, Dick Matthew (West Noble’s coach Rick’s dad), Clyde Mohler, Howard Christman, Dan Draiu. I always wanted to meet Gene Marshall. I am certain he will confirm this account. Ligonier went on to win 3 consecutive sectionals. Brother Jack was named to the all tournament team his freshman year! In my book there was none greater! I hope you understand Gene. Jim Lough Feed lhe ducks! Rigdon to run for state senate

By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer Warsaw attorney Jay Rigdon announced Monday (November 23) that he will be running for state senate on the Democratic ticket in district 13. He’s hoping to fill a position which is presently held by John B. Augsbuger of Syracuse. Rigdon resided as a child in Syracuse and attended school in Fort Wayne. He graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in EXTENDED COVERAGE By 3k i do* WEV ARNOLD When renting a car, should you take the collision damage waiver offered for a fee by the renter, or should you decline it? It depends on your circumstances. If you don't own a car, or don't carry auto insurance in your own name, and your credit card does not offer coverage with the rental (some cards do), take the waiver. Otherwise, you will have to pay for repairs if the car is damaged. However, if you have auto insurance on your own car, that will probably function in the place of the waiver, at no extra* charge. Before you rent, it's wise to check with your insurer to make sure the rental car is covered, and to what limits. Find out if your policy will cover a car more expensive than your own, and what the deductible will be. You'll also want to know what the auto rental company can claim from you if the car is damaged. Some enter a "deposit fee" on your charge card when you rent and issue a credit if the car comes back in good shape. - We've got the answers to your insurance questions at Milford Imurmco Confer Milford, Indiana (HWSMUI

The team of horses was owned by Charles Thompson who had one of the biggest farms of the time. The farm was located where Dana Corporation, Spicer Axle Division, now stands. The home of Thompson still stands and is the first house south of Dana Corporation’s parking lot and is occupied by Graham Meier. The photo was taken at the Thompson farm. If anyone knows other information about this photo he or she should contact the Syracuse office of The Mail-Journal, 103 east Main Street. Also if anyone else has old photos of the area he or she may bring the photos to the Syracuse office. Extra steps are being taken to have the photos returned.
