!• YEARS AGO, NOV. 23,1977 Dean Cousins was named “Lion of the Year” for 1977 when members of the Milford Lions Club met Monday for their annual ladies night event at Amish Acres near Nappanee. The presentation was made by club president Robert Cline. Cousins is the immediate past president of the club. Senator John B. Augsburger, president of Augsburgers, Inc., has announced the upcoming sale of his supermarket and restaurant in Milford. Ronald Schwartz, Fort Wayne, will assume the lease on the business January 1,1978. He will be working in the store during the Latter part of December. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Milford this morning (Wednesday), as Street and Water Commissioner John Martin, assisted by Henry Brown began putting up the green tinseled candles in the downtown area. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Replogle are the parents of their first son, Gregory C., born at 4 am., Friday, Nov. 18, in the Goshen Hospital. He weighed eight pounds, 12 ounces and is 21 inches long. Gregory has a sister, Deniese, one and a half. The Milford Helping Hands had their first 4-H meeting on November 10. They met in the home of their new leader Mrs. John Rouch, at 7 p.m. The new officers that were elected are: Joni Schultz, president; Gina Hurd, vice president; Julie Schieler, secretary; Angie Troup, treasurer; Greta Hurd, reporter; Christy Troup, health and safety; Amy Bucher, song leader; Jacqui Schultz, song leader; Rosalie Rouch, recreation. The club voted that it be a boys and girls club. Mothers Nancy Newcomer and Virginia Hoover were just two of many mothers, parents and relatives who ate lunch with school children at the Milford Elementary School last Thursday. The lunch invitation was extended to the public during American Education Week, observed last week.

29 YEARS AGO, NOV. 22,19C7 Union Thanksgiving services will be held tonight (Wednesday)! at 7:30 p.m. in the Methodist\ church at Milford. Rev. Albert Curtright will deliver the message. He is pastor of the First Brethren church. The wet weather this area has been experiencing this fall has made harvesting conditions extremely bad and in several places has caused a halt. Many farmers still haven’t been able to get to their fields to harvest corn and soybeans. Arthur Baumgartner of Milford was host to the following persons at dinner Thursday evening at Warsaw: Mrs. Helen Funk, Miss Edith Baumgartner, Samuel, Mark, and Stephanie Baumgartner of Milford. Mr. and Mrs. H. John Schultz of Milford are the parents of a daughter, Jacqueline Lee, born at7:3oa.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in the Whitley County hospital at Columbia City. Jacqueline Lee tipped the scales at seven pounds, 6Ms ounces and measured 19>2 inches long. She has one sister, Joni Kay. Mrs. Ronald Baumgartner of Milford was honored at a baby shower Tuesday evening given by Mrs. Michael Arnolt of Nappanee in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Beiswanger at Milford. Games were played with prizes given to the mother-to-be. Mr. and Mrs. John Gardner of Milford were Sunday guests of Mrs. Agatha Charlton of near Milford. Several persons have called in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Pinkerton, r 2 Milford, recently to visit with Mrs. Pinkerton who is recovering from surgery. Darrell Orn resigned as chaplain of the Ancil Geiger post 226 American Legion, Milford, last Tuesday afternoon. Earlier reports were that Mr. Orn had resigned from the Legion after the three-way liquor license was granted. This is nottrue. He only resigned his post as chaplain. 30 YEARS AGO, NOV. 21,1957 The Campbell Market, popular Milford shopping center, is conducting a large store-wide sale beginning today and lasting throughout the remainder of the month. Merle Campbell, owner of the store, said the sale is in step with the store’s improvement and enlarging program. While Mr. Campbell is owner and manager of the Market, he is ably assisted by Mrs. Campbell, two sons, Merle, Jr. (Bud), and Philip, better known as just Phil, and a daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Betty) Vanlaningham. They are assisted by Jim Brooks, stock and carryout boy. Dr. Noble W. Neff, well known Milford veterinarian, has announced his retirement from active practice, effective January 1, 1958. At the same time, he announced the sale of his interest in the professional firm of Drs. Neff and Parrett, veterinarians, to Dr. Carey Parrett and Dr. Gerald W. Snider. Dr. Neff began his veterinary practice, here in 1918 shortly after his graduation from the IU School of Veterinary Medicine at Indianapolis. Among the list of five county girls in this year’s Good Citizen representing Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is Jeri Rae Bushong of Milford, representing Milford high school. Each of the five girls will receive a Certificate of Award and a Good Citizen pin. Ninety-six Christmas club checks amounting to approximately $9,000 have been mailed by the Citizens State Bank of Milford, it was announced this week. The Girls’ Athletic Association went bowling Monday after school and learned some new tricks in bowling and how to keep score. Children’s Hospital, a special hospital where the children come first, serves 80 of the 88 Ohio counties. As the pediatric teaching arm of the Ohio State University Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry, Children’s serves as the training ground for hundreds of new caregivers who will serve children throughout Ohio and beyond. Schmucker joins the serviceand research-oriented staff and has been assigned to the Renal and Burn Care Units as the staff dietitian. given on Tuesday morning by Miss Maude McLaughlin. She first played some piano solos and then directed the entire high school in singing the M. H. S. loyalty songs, Go Milford High School, Hail to Milford High, The Blue and Gray, Milford High, and the Indiana State Song, On the Banks of the Wabash. The M. H. S. Trojans lost their first game of the season Friday night when they tangled with the Syracuse Muskrats. It was a good game and like most other games played between two old rivals, was a close finish. The final score was 21-18 for Syracuse. A six pound son was bom to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oliphant of Washington, D. C. Sunday afternoon. The baby boy has been named Ralston Oliphant and is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. George Ralston of Milford. Several friends planned a successful birthday surprise on Vernon May, Saturday evening. Games were played and prizes given to all. Vernon received many lovely and useful gifts. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Sparklin were expected to land at New York, Monday, ending a 10 day cruise to Cuba and Bahama Islands. An effort was made to reach them by telegram, informing them of the death of Harlan Robinson, and announcing the time of the funeral in the hope that they could arrive home in time for the funeral service.

Rotary seeks candidates ■ . The Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club is searching for candidates ’ to attend its Second Annual District 654 Rotary Youth Leaders Conference at Camp Tecumesh YMCA Outdoor Center, Brookston, April 15-17, 1988 This program has been approved by the division of student activities, Indiana Secondary School Administration. Dick Conroy, local committee chairman, said that participants will be selected from young men and women who have exhibited leadership abilities and who will be entering their senior year of high school in the fall. The Rotary Club is now contacting high school principals, guidance counselors, youth organizations, and other sources for nominations of conference participants. Aimed at developing the leadership potential of young men and young women, the conference will feature many challenging activities. COLLECTION FOR NEEDY FAMILIES — A junior high dance was held at the Lakeland Youth Center in Syracuse on Saturday, Nov. 21, with nearly 150 young persons attending. The dance was open to students in grades six through eight. They were given an option to take canned goods as their admission ticket or to pay an admission fee. All canned goods and proceeds collected were given to needy families in the area.
