Calvary Church plans for Christmas

Members of many area churches are now involved in planning for the special Christmas holiday season. One church which has many programs and activities planned is Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse. Sunday, Nov. 22, was the day when volunteers went to the church in the afternoon to take all of the church’s Christmas decorations from storage in preparation for the annual hanging of the greens event on Sunday, Nov. 29. The manger and nativity figures have all been dusted off and the lights tested so they will be ready to be set up during this enjoyable time of fellowship when the church is decorated in yuletide finery from front to back in preparation for Jesus’ birthday. Adult members will begin decorating at 3 p.m. and the children will join them at 4 p.m.

Thanksgiving program held in new church

The Wawasee Community Bible Church, Milford, held a Thanksgiving program at 6:30 p.m. Sunday evening, Nov. 22. This was the first special program to be held in the newly-built church. The program began with congregational singing, followed by the entrance of the children as they sang “God Is Love.” Dick Roose offered the opening prayer, and Denny Mikel gave the reading, “On Thanksgiving.” Providing a special highlight to the program were the recitations given by the three- and four-year old class, and the kindergarten and first grade class. A trio, consisting of Trisha Mikel, Kerri Speicher and Dawn Speicher, sang “Who?” and “Father I Adore You.” They were accompanied at the piano by Deb Speicher. A group of second through fifth graders, under the leadership of Jane Bess, sang “I Am A Promise” and “Pass It On.” The selections of “We Are So Blessed” and “I Will Enter His Gates’’ were sung by the junior/senior high choir. The choir was directed by Melinda Roose, with Spencer Martin as > Under the direction of Becky z Doll, the adult choir concluded the program with ‘We Gather Together,” “Thanksgiving” and If My People.” Pastor Tom Speicher gave the closing prayer.

w e have all known misfortunes, but cannot deny That some other calamities passed us right by: And although it may seem like a paltry amount, We discover a great many blessings to count. In the process, we don't have to go very far, For by answering questions we see what they are: Have our family members been feeling all right? Can our children be trusted when out of our sight? Are we able to pay all the bills that come due? Do we have any friends who are loyal and true? If we nodded to even one question above, It's example enough of receiving God's love. At the place of our worship, if we are prepared To acknowledge the woes we were thankfully spared. We are learning a faith that can show us the way To thank Heaven for blessings on Thanksgiving Day.

Christian Science Thanksgiving service set Visitors are invited to join the local congregation at First Church of Christ, Scientist at 111 N. sth St. in Goshen at 10:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. Readings from the Bible and the textbook of Christian Science, “Science and Health With Key To the Scriptures” by church founder Mary Baker Eddy, make up one portion of the service. The spontaneous sharing of accounts of healing and gratitude to God from the congregation make up the other portion. The Lord’s Prayer, silent prayer and hymns of praise are also important parts of this worship service. A keynote from the Bible this year will be the refrain in Psalm 107. Commenting on the sincerity with whichwe offer thanksgiving to God for aiFHis goodness, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech.” Care for children too young to attend the hour-long service will be available.
