It happened <. in Syracuse
10 YEARS AGO, NOV. 16,1977 Approximately three inches of snow fell in the area last Friday night, when a heavy snowstorm hit the Midwest, bringing this season’s first measurable snowfall. The Counting House Bank of North Webster recently filed an application with the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for approval to open a branch bank in Syracuse. After considerable discussion, the Syracuse Merchants Association decided last night (Tuesday) to forego any planned citywide Christmas promotion and just advertise Christmas sales in stores this year. The reason why no overall promotion is being planned is due to lack of time. Many merchants felt with only three to four weeks for Christmas shopping left, this wouldn’t give them enough time to have any kind of join giveaway. AGO, NOV. 23,1977 Turkey Creek township pjrqcinct committeemen and women have until next Monday night to crystallize their decision on a recommendation for a replacement for manager of the Syracuse license branch. A meeting was held Monday night of this week for the purpose at the office of township assessor Harry M. VapJlemert, but no decision could be reached. Actually, three votes were taken among the 12 precinct and women present and each one came out a tie. There were four names under consideration for the post of license branch manager — John R. Walker, a resident of W. E. Long Drive; Louis Kuilema, r 4 Syracuse; L. James Butt, 455 Medusa Street; and Mrs. CaTl H. (Roxanna) Hadley, r 3 Syracuse. To clarify an article last week/ im The Mail-Journal, the Syracuse merchants are banding together to promote Christmas shopping in their town in the form of area advertising, special sales and individual store drawings for free prizes to holiday shoppers. It has also been announced that Santa Claus will be in Syracuse on Saturday, Dec. 17. Kids may talk with Father Christmas uptown from 10-noon and in the village from 1-3 p.m. Locations where Santa will be are to be announced later. Since the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission is the plan commission for Turkey Creek Township and Syracuse, the commission began a branch in the Syracuse Town day. Daniel W. Richard, director of the commission, instituted the new system, which has a representative from the commission in the town hall from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each Monday. If a Monday should be a legal holiday, the representative will be in Syracuse the following day, Tuesday. \ 20 YEARS AGO, NOV. 15,1967 Lakeland Community School Corporation treasurer and administrative assistant Lewis St Immel reported Tuesday evening that the Lakeland budget had been cut by the tax board some 16 cents. The reason is revised figures. The new rate: $5.02. The report of Bart Wade, clerk-of-the-works, shows the job as a\ wholeat the Wawasee high school site is on schedule. .The report / was given to members'of the Lakeland school board as they Met in regular session last even/ing. Mr. and Mrs. Emory Guy and Mrs. Georgia Buster, Syracuse, attended the Thanksgiving dinner and program of the Kosciusko Senior Citizens at Warsaw on Monday night. „ Mr. and Mrs. Preston Wright of Lake Wawasee flew to Columbia, Mo., Friday, where they were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Vane Weable. On Saturday they attended the football game between Missouri State university and Kansas State university. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Hodler of r 1 Syracuse will leave Sunday to spend Thanksgiving with Mrs. * Hodler’s sister, Mrs. Gene Norman, Mr. Norman, and family at Hope. 20 YEARS AGO, NOV. 22,1967 Syracuse town board president Byron Connolly read a letter of resignation from the city director of civil defense Floyd Schlotterback Tuesday evening at the town board meeting. The board accepted the resignation with regret and a letter of gratitude will be sent to Mr. Schlotterback. On the evening of November 15, Pastor Donald Messenger of Fort Wayne, representing the Baptist Builders’ club, presented the Syracuse Baptist church with a check for SI,OOO from the Baptist Builders’ club. Another SI,OOO will be given to the church in a few weeks. Railroad passenger service at the Syracuse station of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad will be more than doubled (hopefully) in time for the coming Christmas holiday season it was reported this week. The additional service will be in the form of station stops at Syracuse for the first time in the 42-year history of the B & O’s premier train, The Capitol Limited. A drive to stop the
Capitol Limited locally took form in September when the B & O petitioned regulatory authorities for permission to drop its trains No. 9, the westbound Chicago Express, and No. 8, The Diplomat. Early morning service to Chicago and the Calumet cities had been provided at Syracuse on No. 9, at 4:46 a.m. The train now "runs only as far west at Gary. The discontinuance as proposed would have left Syracuse with one train eastbound — at 1:39 p.m. — and one westbound, at 2:37 p.m. 36 YEARS AGO, NOV. 21,1957 Town board members voted to dismiss the Stiefel Grain Company case from court at Tuesday night’s meeting. The decision was made following a recommendation of town attorney Leon Connolly. General consensus of opinion was that the scrubber equipment nd new smoke stake installed this year by the company had reduced the nuisance. The steam which presented a hazard has been eliminated and the residue and odor, altho not entirely corrected, has been reduced. Plans for the proposed hotel project at the former Waco site are at a standstill at present, said Harold Van Orman, Jr., this week. With increased costs it has been necessary to do some refiguring on estimates and revised plans will not be made until after the first of the year, he added. In the meantime, the Waco building and other structures arg being cleared from the land preparatory to whatever plans materialize for the resort development. 30 YEARS AGO, NOV. 28,1957 Bob Byler, manager of Syracuse Auto Sales in Wawasee Village, was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce at a /well attended meeting Tuesday night at the Wawasee Restaurant. Dr. Wendell Shank was named vice president; Robert Page, secretary; and Noble Blocker, treasurer. Gus Panagos and Dean Pittman will serve as directors with Robert Janney, who became a member of the board of directors as outgoing president. Rev. and Mrs? l J. S. Pritchard and her mother, Mrs. A. H. Blanchard, all of Veedersburg, Indiana, were guests Friday and Saturday of Mrs. Eva Rarig. 50 YEARS AGO, NOV. 18,1937 A birthday dinner was given in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hinderer this week in honor of the
