Plank wins by a landslide

(By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer The heat and intensity of the controversial 1987 mayoral race in Warsaw lost its fire early in the election yesterday as the flames of the Ron Dirck Democratic party were downgraded to smoldering smoke minutes after the ballots were in. The final tally found mayoral incumbent Jeff Plank with a landslide victory of 1,925 votes and Democrat Ron Dirck with 672 followers. Plank will be serving his second four-year term as Republican mayor of Warsaw, “I think that this election taught me something valuable,” commented Plank, “and that is the importance of communicating the whole story and getting it out to everyone. ’ ’ He went on to say he will be taking some very specific steps to relieve any tension or misunderstanding the community may have — things which may have been bom during the electieffi>Q»tinuing, he noted, “I rather thitifc-that people respond better to a more positive campaign rather than a negative one, and we've tried to do that.” However, due to Dirck's obvious disagreement with the proposed athletic complex and his opposition to a number of other projects, things were not always kept on a positive note by candidates during the Warsaw elections. “I always thought this was a conservative community, but apparently things have changed,” commented Dirck, shortly after the election totals were in. “I gave it my best shot — wouldn’t uiangc a uziiig. I ran a g&id straight campaign,” he said. Continuing, he stated, “I will not be running again. ” The closest race in the Warsaw election was in the fifth district between councilwoman Virginia Summe and Republican hopeful Warren J. Ulery. Summe came out the victor with 248 votes, and although it was only a 27-vote margin, that didn’t depress her. “I’m very humble and feel that not only for myself, but for the whole administration, the vote tonight was a vote of confidence,” conveyed Summe. “Apparently we're doing a good job.”

tion in the Tuesday Night Ladies league. Pat Snyder converted the 2-7 and 3-10 splits. Others converting splits in the league included Jodi Kleeman, 2-10; and Suzi Pachynski, 5-7-9. In the Tuesday afternoon ladies league, Marilyn Bray picked up the 3-10 Split twice, while Martha Wright converted the 4-5 and 56 splits. Ruth McMath nailed the 5-7 and 4-5-7 splits during competition. Lakeland Youth Soccer action SYRACUSE — Six games highlighted last weekend’s Lakeland Youth Soccer action. In ‘A’ division games, Campbell’s IGA topped Syracuse Rubber, 5-2, while Laketronics edged the State Bank ott Syracuse, 3-1. Kinrow closed the elder division with a 3-0 shutout of Cotton/Cotton. In ‘B’ division play, Milford Kiwanis shutout Syracuse Lions, 4-0. Wawasee Kiwanis trounced Lakeland Kiwanis, 6-1, and Lakeland-Wawasee Rotary turned back Sea Nymph, 3-1.

Summe is returning for her second four-year term and took office in 1983, also by a narrow margin. Winners in the councilman-at-large positions were Democrat Robert W. Gast, with 1,444 votes, and Democrat Robert L. Richmond with 1,382 votes. Gast and Richmond were triumphant over Republican Paul E. Hodges, 1,000 votes, and William E. Goshert, 1,203 votes. Also returning to councilman positions will be uncontested Republican Rex Wildman, Republican Ernest B. Wiggins, Republican James R. Osborne, and Republican James t. Silveus. Madeline Elaine Call will also be returning to her position as Warsaw Clerk-Treasurer. There were 4,036 registered voters in Warsaw this year, with 2,685 ballots actually cast, which is a voter turnout of approximately 65 percent. It was noted by officials that the actual registration number was down this year, and there were 5,009 persons registered at primary election time. The loss of over 1,000 persons was due to purging of persons who had not voted during the last two years, persons who have moved, or persons who have passed away. Although the mayoral seat will again be held by a Republican, the election was somewhat split, and both county committee chairmen noted they will be working to increase registered voters. “In 1988 it will be essential that people be made aware of their right to vote. We do need to redouble our efforts in getting people registered,” stated Kosciusko vuuuiy Chaii umu nr* ikoi. Jobless rate falls Factory employment rose sharply last month, the government said, dropping joblessness below 6 percent for the first time in nearly eight years and signaling renewed vigor in the industrial heartland. The civilian unemployment rate fell to 5.9 percent in September. The last time the jobless rate was 5.9 percent was in November 1979.
