Controversy sparks Warsaw City Election
| By CARLA GAFF The intensity of the controversial 1987 Warsaw City Elections has continued to grow as candidates have sought to draw more and more voters to their side through the discussing of various issues. Mayoral incumbent Jeff Plank and Democratic hopeful Ron Dirck have each gone on local radio to state their views of how the city government should be handled. However, the two did not have a public debate, as hoped for by many area residents. For this year s election War saw has 4.036 registered voters, which is 1.300 fewer than in 1983 At primary time this year there were 5.009 persons registered to vote., although after purging, about 1.000 persons were taken from the voting ranks Purging is required by the state after primary elections, stated county clerk Jeanne Weirick. Persons being purged are those who have not voted for over two years, and persons who have moved or passed away, she said. There are five voting districts in Warsaw and persons will have a chance to pick their favorite person for mayor, clerktreasurer, councilmen at large and district councilman. Persons in all districts will vote for Plank or Dirck for mayor plus the following: William Goshert (R). Paul Hodges (R), Robert Gast (D), or Robert Richmond (D), for councilmen-at-large. The clerktreasurer’s position is not being contested and Republican. Madeline Elaine Call is the only one seeking the spot.
Each district except for district five will have only one candidate mt kii vuuuCuuUsu, for ".‘hl-Ch to vote for. Virginia Summe (D), and Warren Ulery (R). are slated against each other in district five. Ballots for district one have James Silveus (R); district two ballots have H. Rex Wildman (R); district three ballots have Ernest B. Wiggins (R); and district four ballots have James R. Osborne (R). Persons in the Warsaw area who are not sure whether they’re registered to vote may call 267-4502 or if in the northeastern portion of the county, call 457-5758 toll free.
