Rev. Richard Dunning adds the personal touch

(By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer personal touch to his work is something Pastor Richard Dunning has accomplished over the last 30 years by doing his own church bulletins and news letters. “I mainly do it here because I don’t have a church secretary,” commented Pastor Dunning, “and I do like to put in my own touches.” He explained that the bulletin gives the order of the service, along with the persons involved, plus announcements concerning meetings, activities and hospital notes. “We follow a pretty strict format in the bulletin,” he explained, “and there really isn’t enough room to put in a lot of other stuff, but I do manage to get a lot in the church news letter.” Dunning has been sending out church news letters to his various congregations for over 25 years.

The letter goes to church members, friends, some former members and persons who may become new members. He said the letter contains wedding anniversaries, birthdays, various happenings in the parish as well as incidents in the lives of people in the church. * ‘The first lead article in the letter is usually an article from the pastor to the people,” commented Pastor Dunning, “it emphasizes the needs and discusses what’s going on — it’s just an informal pastoral letter.” He went on to explain that the remainder of the letter has church news, and announcements of coming things in it. “I’ve not always done the news letter entirely alone,” he said, “in the churches that had secretaries, I usually got help typing and getting it ready to go out. But here in Syracuse I usually do everything from the beginning to the end.”

He went on to say that there is an advantage to doing it yourself because it can be easier and quicker to do alone rather than telling someone else how to do it. “You’ve got it in your own mind and know what you’re wanting to say” explained Pastor Dunning, “and there is always the potential of having the main idea missed entirely when you have someone else do it. ” Pastor Dunning and his wife Esther have been with the * Syracuse congregation for approximately two, years. Prior to their move here they served at a church in Sunrise Beach, Mo., near the Lake of the Ozarks. “We’re just returning to the area where we have a number of friends,” said Mrs. Dunning. She went on to explain that they had spent 13 years working in a church in Middlebury before going to Sunrise Beach. Pastor and Mrs. Dunning were both raised in the Atchison, Kan., area.

Preacher's kids have fun, too!

(By GLEN LONG Staff Writer With all the churches in the Lakeland area, it is not uncommon to talk with a youngster and find that his or her father serves as pastor of an area church. It is somewhat unusual, however, to talk with three brothers and find that both their father and mother serve as pastors of a local church. Luke, 11; Nathanael, 9,; and James, 5, are sons of Dr. Gary M. and Rev. Sarah M. Tuttle, who are both pastors at Rock Interdenominational Church, located on the east side of Lake Wawasee. Luke and Nathaneal are in grade five and three, respectively, at West Noble School and James is looking forward to kindergarten next year. When asked if there are any special problems with being “preacher’s kids” they immediately answered that they are just normal average kids with no special problems. After a few moments of thought, however, Luke grinned and said that in church school class “they maybe expect more from you.” He said

he is kind of expected to be better at memorizing scripture, reading and entering into class discussions, but he enjoys this and it is no problem for him. Nathaneal ndded that some people may ttunk a preacher’s kid is supposed to be a special “holy person,” but this doesn’t cause any problem. The boys were all enthusiastic as they talked about their Rock Church. Luke expounded on how much fun it was last Easter when the church was almost overflowing with people. James commented that he thinks they have a fine church and stated that he wants to be a preacher like his mom and dad. Neither of his brothers is sure what his career choice will be, but Nathaneal said .ie leans toward the Army. Communion is served every Sunday at Rock Church, whose name comes from the phrase, “Jesus, Our Rock. ’ ’ On some Sundays the communion elements are served by children who volunteer to serve and Luke and Nathaneal said they enjoy participating in this function. The Tuttle family keeps three cats and a dog as pets. Luke and Nathaneal said they cooperate in

taking care of the pets (A comment that brought a smile of slight disbelief from Mom). “Raising children is the same in or out of a parsonage,” she said. “I am convinced, however, that they all need to grow up in a family that attends church and worships God.” When asked what he would say to other young people about church, Luke waxed poetic with, “If you want to be cool, come to Bible school.” referring to Bible school, which meets every Wednesday night at 7 p.m. He went on to say that the church has a good group of kids and he invites his friends to come join them. Nathaneal, whose mother said he is very sensitive to the rights of others, added, “Everyone’s equal in our church. No matter who you are or what you wear, you’re welcome here. ” James, the quiet one, made his statement with, “All boys and girls should go to church.” This is a special time for the Tuttles as Sarah’s parents, Mr. and Mrs Francis Martin, just arrived from North Carolina for a visit. Sarah hopes they can stay at least for Thanksgiving.
