'National Conventions' at Wawasee Hiah School
The National Republican and Democratic Conventions last week at Wawasee High School resulted in the nomination of candidates for president and vice president. The Government Economic Classes of Richard Welborn and Ron Corson held the mock convention last Wednesday. The study will continue with a candidate press conference today (Wednesday), ending with an election Tuesday, Nov. 3. The Democrat Party slated Jeff Leising for president and Scott Weisser as vice president. Staci Foy is the party’s committee chairwoman and presided over the national convention. The Republican Party nominated Steve Briggs for president and Rich Freeman for vice president. The committee chairwoman for the party is Kristy Parsons. She presided over the convention. Corson stated each party has selected a platform and would spend time between the convention and press conference comparing and analyzing each party’s platform, before starting their campaigns. The press conference will be based on the platforms. Platforms Each party’s platforms relate to the following: prayer, economy, foreign policy, justice, United Nations, abortion, education, nuclear policy, AIDS, environment, farm/agriculture, the Infrastructure, Drugs, homeless, defense, debt, space, free trade, and the role of the government. Both parties are in agreement on the five areas concerning prayer including that voluntary prayer not be permitted in public schools nor a prescribed prayer read over a school public address system. Also both feel a moral training program should not be placed in a high school curriculum. In the area of economy both parties agreed in the supply side economic theory, the nation controlling the defense, supply theory as a solution for the economy, equal treatment for blacks and whites, unemployment being harmful, voluntary membership to labor unions and not adding more regulations to businesses. There were five points not in agreement. The GOP believes the affirmative action regulations should be eased, while the Democrats feel the programs compensate for the past and present job discriminations. Democrats feel the national government should control the social welfare, the GOP believes it is the states responsibility. Increasing taxes to balance the federal budget is not supported by the GOP while the Democrats feel the federal budget should be reduced. Lowering the value of the US dollar by the government to cut the trade deficit is favored by the GOP while the Democratic party feels foreigners earning US dollars should reinvest it in the US Finally the GOP does not believe the federal government should become involved in restoring the nation’s competitiveness while the Democrats feel the government should. Split On Foreign Policy The Democrats and GOP are split in the area of foreign policy, disagreeing with one-half of the points. The parties are in agreement that politics not determine who gets aid, the US not support an Independent Palestinian State, Israel return all occupied territories not afforded by the United Nations, not support Iraq against Iran and the US has an obligation to stop communist aggression in the world. The areas of disagreement are in: reducing foreign aid with the GOP against and Democrats for, military or economic aid to Central America where the Democrats are against both while the GOP feels the US should emphasize military aid rather than economic aid, US support for the Contras have the GOP supporting it while the Democrats are against, Negotiations with the Sandinistas are supported by the Democrats with the GOP against, President 144 attend North Webster 'Just Say No' North Webster’s "Just Say No” Club held its first meeting for the 1987 school year and reportedly had a great turn out. Over 144 students and interested persons were in attendance with a number of teachers and Wawasee High School students assisting. The group discussed an article which related the necessity of choosing good friends, and planned an activity for the November meeting. Each member was given a "Just Say No" magazine and signed a card for Nancy Reagan who is the national chairwoman for the group. Refreshments were served and it was decided that the group will meet again on Thursday, Nov. 19.
Ronald Reagan accurately perceiving the Soviet Union is believed by the GOP while it is not by the Democrats, international conflict has the Democrats believe the US should not become involved in just any international conflict, while the GOP feels it is the US’s duty to become involved. Both parties agreed upon the 10 areas under justice. These areas are: not to increase taxes to employ more courts and judges, arbitrators be employed on a private basis to relieve congested courts, vigilante groups do not perform useful functions in our society, handguns should be registered, suspected criminals be protected that by weakining the rights of defendants endangers the rights of every person, there should ■be a death penalty wit’ ’be Democrats using the words pital punishment, eavesdropping should be used to aid in the arrest of criminals with the GOP adding wiretapping to aid in the arrest of organized criminals, accused persons the right to counsel and right to remain silent, federal government preventing newspapers from secret documents, and law enforcement to prevent crime. All points under the United Nations received agreement by both parties. These are: US remain a member of the UN, the UN offers the best opportunity for world peace, not fair for the US to continue paying many member nations share of the UN expenses, and loyalty and support expected on issues for countries the US is helping out. Abortion, Education And More There was only one area both parties agreed on in the Abortion platform, that federal tax dollars not be used for abortion on demand. The GOP does not believe in the practice of abortion while the majority of the Democrats feel a woman should have the right to decide. The Democrats feel it would be a worse choice to have an unplanned child than to have a lifetime of trying to get ahead to experience financial success, with the GOP feels a human life is more important than material goods. The GOP supports the idea of selling stocks and bonds over the counter to raise money capital for research in the creation of artificial human life, while the Democrats are against the sale of stocks and bonds for this purpose. Busing was the disagreement area in education. The

Democrats feel busing should be used to ensure desegregated education while the GOP feels busing is not the solution to achieve racial integration. Both parties did agree the federal government should continue to be active in aiding states in funding education, government continue to subsidize student loans and the federal government provide education vouchers. Nuclear policy for both parties found them in agreement on controlling nuclear weapon growth, halt the sale of technology used to make nuclear weapons, nuclear wastes be disposed of in outerspace and that citizens of a community be made aware of nuclear waste being transported through their community. The parties were not in agreement about nuclear power plants. The Democrats are in favor of using nuclear power if all safety precautions are met and maintained, and in conjunction with other reasonable and feasible forms of energy, while the GOP feels the US should not continue to develop nuclear power plants and an alternative electrical power source. Agreement in the AIDS platform came in the areas of: spending tax dollars for research, handing out condoms in schools should be considered, everyone be tested for AIDS, testing aids before getting married a good idea, AIDS teaching be taught in the junior high years, and parents are not talking to their kids about AIDS. The Democratic Party feels AIDS carriers should carry a card identifying them, however the GOP feels those passing an AIDS exam should not have to carry an identification card as these could easily be copied and forged. In the environment area both parties agreed polluters should pay the cost of environmental clean-up, and the US act to reduce acid rain substantially. The Democrats feel economic considerations should not take priority over environmental issues with the GOP believing economic and environmental goalscan be mutually beneficial. Agree In Three Areas Both parties agreed on all points on the farm/agriculture, taxes and infrastructure platforms. The points concerning the farm issue were: not ending federal payments to farmers, government involvement is necessary to ensure American farmers can compete on the international market, should do ex-
tensive research in agriculture, and that the homeless do not owe their condition and plight to poor individual planning on their part. The points concerning taxes were: more taxes be paid by>edr"" porations so indiviatrsL-eruzens will pay lower taxes, the tax system should be changed so those having more wealth will pay higher taxes, against a flat rate tax system, and a decrease in taxes for the 1987-1988 year. In the infrastructure platforms ’ points were: repair of the nations infrastructure done on a national level, the nation’s infrastructure have a regional inspection system to insure public safety, and US spending too much money on defense and not enough on infrastructure. There was one area of disagreement in the drugs platform. The GOP feels a drug dealer should not receive the death penalty for selling drugs while the Democrats feel that drug users should receive no special privileges when capital punishment is involved. Both did agree the government should not tolerate drug dealers, not allow illegal drugs to be taxed, and that prostitution not be legalized nor taxed. No Agreement On Homeless Neither party were in agreement in the platform of the homeless. The GOP feels money being used for defense should be used for other priorities as education and welfare while the Democrats feel the nation’s defense is important to the nation's safety. The GOP believes the government should spend more money on human welfare while the Democrats feel no more money be spent. The Democrats feel it is the responsibility of individuals to cover health insurance and medical care, while the GOP feels a new program be developed of a national health insurance to cover all Americans and to lower the cost of medical care. In the area of a minimum annual income, the GOP feels all American families should be guaranteed a minimum annual income while the Democrats feel each person should earn what they deserve. The Democrats feels it is not the responsibility of the government to provide the? homeless with shelter and food while the GOP believe shelter and food should be provided to the homeless at the government expense. On defense, both parties agree enough is being spent on defense and should not be increased, and
that the US should not reduce the number of troops in Western Europe The GOP feels a strategic defense initiative be developed while the Democrats belief no strategic defense initiative be developed. In the debt area the parties are in disagreement concerning cutting the trade deficits. The GOP believes lowering the value of the dollar should not be done while the Democrats believe the danger of the trade deficit is somewhat overstated. High priority on space industrialization, serious attempts at communicating with other life forms in the universe not be taken and placing space stations around the earth and moon were all agreed upon by both parties in the space platform. Free trade found the parties disagreeing oh three areas: European trade with the Soviets helping peace, retaliation against restrictive European trade practices and pressuring Japan to buy American goods. The GOP does not feel European trade with the soviets will help ensure peace nor should the US retaliate against restrictive European trade practices and the US should not pressure Japan to buy American goods. They did agree quiet diplomacy is not the best way to change South African policies, more severe economic sanctions against South Africa should be enacted, American Corporations should be allowed to do business in South Africa and the US should expand trade with the People’s Republic of China. The final area is the role of Hie government. Both parties feel the federal government should support comparable worth, the government and industry work together to ensure energy needs of the future, immigrants not be required to speak English to enter the country and that employers hiring illegal aliens be punished. The areas not agreed upon were: use of coal, with the GOP believing the US should not promote increase use of coal, with the Democrats believing the advantages of coal outweigh disadvantages; and amnesty to illegal aliens. The GOP believes amnesty should be given to il-
