Randy Rhodes gives commands in German
(By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer The hot sun blazes down and the humidity is so high many find it hard to breathe much less do anything else, but for a handful of boys, the neighborhood dog show is starting, and that’s all that matters. Ten-year-old Randy Rhodes is once again hosting the show, training the animals, setting up the ring, and inviting the neighborhood For Randy Rhodes, owner of Rhodes Kountry Kennel, Inc., that was how it all began approximately 18 years ago. However, today, Rhodes doesn't just play dog show, he trains all types of dogs and specializes in true German shepherds from Germany. Profile Rhodes specializes in Schutzhund training and performing, which is to say he trains German shepherds, speaking to them in the German language. “I stick with German commands because I like to stay with the animals* origin,” explained Rhodes. Schutzhund is a German oriented sport, developed to test the temperament of German shepherds which have been trained for true protection knowing when there is a real threat. “I go to different places throughout the midwest participating in Schutzhund shows. It’s usually an all-day event as the dogs are tested in obedience, tracking and protection,” commented Rhodes. Rhodes recently received Mid-Central Regional Championship honors while showing at Purdue University; however, he often shows in Illinois, and Missouri as well as parts of Indiana. At this time, Rhodes has two German shepherds which were shipped to him directly from Germany. He’s had Ike for over two years and recently acquired a voung female he calls Elli. He stated he’s planning to mate the two in order to achieve a well-rounded, intelligent, ex-

"All the owner has to do is bring the dog in and leave it, and come back later to pick up the finished product. Rhodes started special training classes in the area approximately five years before he went on to open the kennel in 1984. At the time he was holding classes in the evening and training police patrol dogs for canine work in Elkhart during the day. “I felt it was the type of thing that no matter what area of the country you lived in, you could benefit from a police protection dog,” conveyed Rhodes. “The dogs were trained for both home protection and businesses.” He continued, stating that he really enjoyed working with the dogs and seemed to have a “natural rapport with them;” and that training was really easy for him. When he’s not working in the kennel, training dogs, or attending shows, Rhodes enjoys putting on dog shows for people in the area. “I put on a dog show every couple of months for various clubs. Boy Scout groups, schools, special festivals and 4-H organizations,” said Rhodes. A lifetime area resident, Rhodes graduated from Warsaw High School and currently lives near North Webster. He and his wife Jennifer have twin sons, Jacob and Justin. He states that his main hobby is showing dogs. “Because I do it for a business, I find it really relaxing to go to shows with just my dogs, and not have all the training pressure on me,” explained Rhodes. He went on to say that presently he’s involved in raising his sons which takes up a lot of his time, as he has total daytime care of the boys while Jennifer is working away from home. He takes the boys out to the kennel with him every day, teaching, training and nurturing them in the ways of caring for animals. Though he states he also spends a lot of time feeding, caring and raising his active four-year-old sons. Randy Rhodes concluded that he was interested in training dogs at a very tender age, ana became specificaiiy interestea in uerman Shepherds while he was in high school. He commented that he had a friend who tended to take his shepherd with him almost everywhere he went, and that he also became attached to the large powerful animals. However, he did not set out to become a dog trainer, he just worked himself into the position by attending seminars and workshops. But today training dogs is a valuable part of Rhodes’ life.
LOUISA'S LETTER
Dear Louisa, I am a divorcee and am young and attractive. I have three children but they are all in school and I find time hanging heavy on my hands. To be perfectly frank I would like to get married again if I could find a good wholesome man to share my life as I love to keep house and entertain friends. But the problem is that so many people are afraid to have an attractive divorcee around their husbands. And I must say that it is surprising how some husbands, who seem to be faithful, act when they get around divorcees. Well all that makes it difficult to meet eligible men as I am not interested in someone else’s husband. Just what is the solution to my problem and how can I go about meeting some eligible men? A.H. — Arizona. Answer: The only suggestion I can give you is to go where the men are. Help in civic matters, politics or other volunteer work. Another good idea is to get a job where you will come in contact with people of all kinds. Keep on entertaining but, when
