WHAT HAPPENS when the bossman (or woman) turns 70? You hold a surprise birthday party, of course. MJ co-publisher Arch Baumgartner will observe his 70th birthday on Thursday, Oct. 1. So ... last Thursday the entire staff of The Papers Incorporated held a birthday party at the end of the work day to honor this three score plus 10 event. Was he surprised? Yes indeed! The 100 plus staff members who knew what was going on all kept the secret and AEB was surprised. Rich Rhodes served as MC for the event with Arch being presented tape recorded messages from the staff members in the Warsaw, Goshen and Elkhart offices (after all, you can't completely close an office even for the bosses’ birthday). There was also given a giant social security check in honor of his 70th year, a tree full of “interesting” and extremely
“useful” gifts, a card signed by the entire staff, a special edition front page of The M-J and a black and white and re(a)d decorated birthday cake. And, a poem, the ABC’s of AEB and other creative writing skills were put to test in his honor. 4 IF OUR readers know anyone who has several coins missing from their coin collection, we might have news for them. A Milford reader, who wishes anonymity at this point, found a 1942 nickel and a 1964 dime enclosed in cardboard as if they were a part of a collection. On top of that, the party found a 1962 and 1958 cardboard which apparently had a silver dollar taken from them. Is it possible these coins and cardboard enclosures were pilfered from someone’s coin collection? If anyone has this problem, or knows of anyone who does, contact The Mail-Journal, we might be of help.
MEMBERS OF the Milford Fire Department will hold their annual chicken barbecue on Sunday, Oct. 4, as National Fire Prevention Week gets underway. The event is carry-out only. Purchasing chicken from the firemen is a good way to thank them for serving the community and proceeds help to purchase needed equipment for the department. Besides, it’s a day when the woman of the house (or the man) doesn’t have to cook. MRS. ARTHUR Haab of Goshen, Mrs. Elmer Haab, Miss Florence Stieglitz and Miss Edith Baumgartner of Milford, ate lunch in a Nappanee restaurant on a recent Tuesday. Later they called at a nursing home in Bremen to visit Mrs. Mary Good and Mrs. Herman Hueni. Mrs. Arthur Haab gave Mrs. Good a crock filled with flowers and Halloween ornaments. Mrs. Good, who is in her 90s, is
formerly from Milford ant the mother of Melba Hunsberger of r 1 Milford. The group also called on Mrs. Anna Sehuch of Bremen. A stop was made on the way home for ice cream. The lunch and the treat were compliments of Mrs. Arthur Haab. OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS at the Lakeland Loving Care Center will be celebrated by Julia May, Oct. 3; Mary Orn, Oct. 8; Hulda Graff, Oct. 14; Bernice Yoder, Oct. 16; and John Stone, Oct. 31. A broken gas hose was the cause. Hughes had the fire out before Milford firemen arrived. The department responded with two trucks and six men. Fire Chief Max Duncan couldn’t give a damage estimate at this time. Shown in the photo are, left to right, Alvin Haab, Chief Duncan, Doug Ruch, Hughes, “Hap” Ruch, and Mike Charlton. town is inviting the public to tour his woods this weekend — Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2,3, and 4— in the afternoon. Haney resides on Walnut Acres on CR 1050 N, just west of 500 W — about one mile west of Hastings. Walnut Acres is a Century Farm which has had a classified forest for the past 40 years. The name comes from the large number of walnut trees found on the property. Haney said all are invited to walk on the paths in the woods. Hayrides will be held at 1, 2:30 and 4 each afternoon. Children, he says, must be ac-
of auto theft and kidnapping in Illinois. After the subjects were found sleeping in the 1987 Ford station wagon, Gallmeier ran a check on the car and found that it had been stolen in Fairview Heights, 111., where the car’s owner was abducted at knifepoint and dropped off a few blocks later uninjured. Police believe the vehicle also may have been involved in a hitskip accident in Richmond, Ind., Saturday night, Sept. 26. Kosciusko County detective Tom Kitch was unavailable for
companied by parents. And, he will not be responsible for accidents. VICTOR AND Dorothy Beer from Laßelle, Fla., formerly of Milford (he's the son of the late Henry and Alice Beer) will be in Milford on Wednesday and Thursday and will be staying with his aunt, Esther Getz.
