Quail Unlimited is a national, non-profit organization aimed at improving quail populations through habitat enhancement and public education efforts. Local chapters form under the national charter to accomplish these goals. To date, Indiana has seven local chapters, six of which are in the southern part of the state. Each chapter conducts an annual fund raising banquet to earn money for local quail habitat projects. Eighty percent of the funds
raised by Indiana's chapters remain within our state. Sixty percent of each chapter’s earnings remain in its own treasury and are ‘spent locally for habitat restoration projects. Twenty percent of the earnings are earmarked for a State Quail Unlimited Committee and the remaining twenty percent are utilized by the national Quail Unlimited organization. The State Quail Unlimited Committee will coordinate statewide quail projects with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The national Quail Unlimited organization utilizes twenty percent of its earnings to publish a bi-monthly Quail Unlimited magazine. Essentially, 100% of the earnings are spent on habitat restoration or educational efforts. Northern Indiana Quail Unlimited members will be seeking landowners within the six county area who are interested in conducting habitat management practices. Agreements will be written where Quail Unlimited will pay the landowner to complete certain management practices. Practices may include
planting food plots, developing nesting cover, leasing-strips of idle land or developing winter cover in the form of brushy thickets or brush piles. Once the landowner completes the agree ment, Quail Unlimited will use its earnings to pay the landowner the agreed amount. Quail Unlimited will not use its funds to stock game-farm birds. Because of the very poor survival of pen-reared quail, this practice is not considered a wise expen diture of funds. Instead, as men tioned, all funds will be spent to improve both the quality and quantity of quad habitat which benefits wild coveys Due to several recent mild winders and an increase in idle cropfields, northern Indiana's quail and pheasant populations are rebounding from recent all time lows. If these conditions continue. and if interested citizens lend a hand, the whistle of a bob/* white can once again be a com mon sound throughout the coun tryside. Northern Indiana Quail
Unlimited has plans for its first annuhif fund raising banquet to be held on October 3, 1887. The banquet will be held at the Mariott
