said, “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” In describing the Friends worship services, Lou said the Friends teaching is that Christ has enlightened all men and Friends stress that there is a personal relationship between each person and Jesus Christ. He added that prayer requests and testimony are a large part of Friends services and they place an emphasis on silent worship. ’ “People need to have silence to wait on the Lord so He can speak to them,” Lou said. “Actually, everyone in church meeting is a minister. We’re interested in a team ministry and the clergy helps guide the church’s efforts.” Lou said that most 'Americans think of the Quaker or Friends Church as related to Pennsylvania because William Penn, after whom the territory was named, was a Quaker. The pastor said the Friends Church actually was created out of the religious unrest and wars among several major church groups in England in the 16th century. “George Fox, a country preacher, was one of the key ministers in the Friends movement, which was the fusion of several smaller independent worship groups,” said Lou, “Friends Church grew out of the basic position that each person's relation to God is a personal thing.” Sunday worship at Friends Church begins at 10 am., following 9:15 Sunday school. Quaker Haven Camp is located west of the intersection of CR 900 N and 500E. ago, one of Cooley’s enjoyments was leisurely walking from one end of Ligonier to the other and visiting people as he walked. But things changed. His cold feet and sore muscles developed into legs that tired easily and pained when used for a while. Cooley is a victim of peripheral vascular disease, a condition in which the main arteries which feed blood to the legs are clogged and the circulation is cut off. Doctors told him that without an operation there was a high risk that he would eventually lose the use of his legs through amputation. Having worked at the Topeka plant of Essex for 22 years, he New Life Mission series is planned St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Syracuse will host a New Life Mission series on Sunday through Wednesday nights, Oct. 4-7, in the church sanctuary. was one of many who became unemployed when the plant closed. Since that time, high blood pressure and age have limited his employment. At the present time, part-time work as a selfemployed delivery man has not supplied enough money to pay high health insurance premiums. With medical costs estimated at $14,000 to $40,000, the Cooley family turned to their church for help. Members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ligonier soon assured the Cooleys that they would support them to the best of their ability. They urged Cooley to get the operation as soon as possible. On Monday, Sept. 28, he underwent corrective surgery at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne in his first step toward regaining useful legs. Trinity Lutheran Church has also taken steps to help with the medical cosis oi Chuck cooiey The Aid Association fbr Lutherans, a fraternal life insurance organization, was asked to consider the Cooley family for their “Helping Hands Program.” Under this program, the insurance company matches funds up to $2,000 contributed to an approved fund raising program. 9:30 to 10:30 though it has recently been announced that the meetings will be continuing. The single’s meeting provides an opportunity to make new friends, have good fellowship, discuss relevant topics pertaining to the single life and participate in planned monthly activities for fun and learning together. No matter the church affiliation, everyone is welcome and will enjoy the “neutral” ground. At this time the group has had good response, but has recently been faced with a growing question concerning the location of the meetings. This is because Mike’s will once again be closing for the year. But, alas, the group has received permission to continue meeting at Mike's through the fall and winter months. The shop is owned by Mike Kern of North Webster. The “singles” program was started from an inspiration by Associate Pastor of the church Jim Davey. It is currently being led by Sherry and Bill Crane. Anyone wishing more information may call the Cranes at 594-5565 or the church office at 834-4281.
