The non-profit organization was Started in Kosciusko County in 1984, in conjunction with the South Bend Crime Stoppers. Kosciusko County was the first county to unite with South Bend in the effort of stopping crimes in this manner. “To the best of my knowledge, no one had ever done this before — it was really a unique thing and a number of other counties joined in shortly after we did,” explained Holderman. other counties involved in the program and all Crime Stoppers cans are forwarded io South Bend through the toll-free 800 number. At that point, they are fielded into the proper counties. When persons call Crime Stoppers, they are given a number and asked to give their information. They are then told to check back in a week,' and if an arrest has been made, they will be told if and how much of a reward they qualify for. If an arrest has not been made, the person may be asked to give additional information. “The procedure can go on for quite awhile, but most are completed within a couple of weeks,” commented Holderman. He went on to say that Crime Stoppers crimes that are not completed in a short time are generally drug related. It’s next to impossible to have Kosciusko County officers m&ke drug.busts in their own county, he stated, as the county is small enough that most of the officers are known by persons in the area and calling in additional help takes time. Holderman continued, saying most Crime Stoppers reports in the county are theft and burglary related. “Kosciusko County as a whole doesn’t have that many murder related type of crimes, so consequently most of the calls we receive are theft, burglary and drug related,” conveyed Holderman. Prank calls are almost nonexistent, said Holderman, who went on to say, “most generally, our tips are extremely accurate.” He stated that Crime Stopper tips run in cycles of two or three a week some months, to as little as one call in three weeks. “We became a part of Crime Stoppers because it seemed to be an operation that was working extra well — and it’s paid off very well here,” commented Holderman. Crime Stoppers is an organization that is totally funded through gifts from businesses, industries, service clubs and individuals. There are no tax dollars involved. The Crime Stoppers board is made up of people from the community with no police officers on the board, although Holderman works between the South Bend Crime Stoppers and the local board. He has served as the coordinator for Kosciusko County since its beginning. Along with being a part of Crime Stoppers and being a sergeant detective for Kosciusko County, Holderman is also a

farmer. A lifetime resident area resident, he graduated from Atwood High School and immediately started farming. He hired on with the sheriff’s department as a deputy and also served as an investigator and a detective. However, over the years he’s never left his true love of farming and is currently raising approximately 90,000 pullet hens each year. When he’s not farming or "chasing the bad guys,” Holderman enjoys restoring antique tractors and is currently working on a 1936 John Deere AR. “My main problem is I’m running out of room,” stated Holderman with a smile. “Right now, I have six antique tractors on the place.” Stan and his wife, Aleta, have two sons, Larry and Bryan, both of whom also live in the county. Holderman has spent a lot of time attending homicide, fingerprinting, drugs, bombs and explosives, photography and a number of other police schools. He has additional assistance when he goes out on a crime, as he’s also a life member of the National Rifle Association and is a master marksmanship. But that’s not all, Holderman is also a pilot and owns his own

plane, ana occasionally uses it when working with Crime Stoppers or the sheriff’s department. So, one could say, there really is no place for the “bad guys” to hide in Kosciusko County.

Wake up to a healthy breakfast

Say “breakfast” to some people and visions of a big, farmstyle breakfast of home fries, warm biscuits, bacon, eggs and freshsqueezed orange juice pop into their heads. Oh, to wish that one had more time to fix a well-balanced breakfast other than an occasional weekend! While most adults would agree that breakfast is an important meal, approximately one-fourth of all adults usually or always skip it and, and fewer people than ever are eating breakfast at home. If you’re a member of this group, why not put your timemanagement skills into action and opt for a breakfast that can be quickly prepared and eaten at home or put together at your desk. With a little advance planning, one can enjoy a breakfast that supplies the energy and important nutrients needed by the body throughout the day. Consider some basic options: An eight ounce carton of yogurt, a half cup of cottage cheese, one and one half slices of cheese, a slice of bread, a cup of ready-to-eat cereal and a medium size apple or orange. Foods from each of the basic four food groups that can be mixed and matched in a variety of simple breakfast combinations. For example, on mornings when nothing seems to go right, pour a cup of cereal into a container and carry it to work accompanied bj an orange orbanana. Add a carton of milk from the vending machine, and you have yourself a nutritious breakfast. For something a bit more enticing, spread one-half cup of ricotta cheese on a slice of whole grain bread and top it with a teaspoon of jam or a sprinkling of cinnamon. Or, if bagels are

your passion, spread on some cream cheese and top with slices of apple. Breakfast shakes from the blender take but a few minutes to prepare and when the weather is warm, offer a cool, refreshing pause. Prepare a banana eggnog shake by adding one-half ripe banana, one large egg, threefourths cup milk, and a teaspoon of sugar into a blender container and whirl together. Pour into a glass and sprinkle with nutmeg. Or, pour it into a small thermos and carry it to work, being sure to shake it well before drinking. For a yogurt-based shake, blend together a cup of plain yogurt, one-third cup of milk, a cup of cut-up fresh fruit, a few drops each of vanilla and sweetener and a dash of nutmeg. Add a tablespoon of wheat germ and several tablespoons of nonfat dry milk for extra nutrition. Open-faced breakfast sandwiches can also be put together quickly and broiled in a counter top oven. slice of lowfat cheese provide an unusual but tasty breakfast entree. When time is more abundant on the weekends, cook some extra breakfast foods and freeze them, to reheat in the microwave during the week. Whole wheat pancakes to which Cheddar or Swiss cheese and crumbled bacon have been added will provide the extra staying power needed for a busy morning at work. Forget the traditional topping of butter and maple syrup; they’re tasty enough to eat “as is.” And don’t overlook a piece of leftover cheese pizza or cottage cheese bacon quiche as a sound way to start of the day or a “reverse” cocktail hour of red and green grapes, a slice or two of Swiss cheese and some crackers. Post these suggestions on the refrigerator door, so that the next time you think of leaving the house without breakfast, you’ll have a ready supply of tasty ideas worth waking up for.
