Second graders present play Mrs. Eloyce Van Lue’s second grade reading class at Syracuse Elementary School presented the play “Good Friend Johnny Appleseed” to the second grade last Friday morning, Sept 25. The children dressed in Pioneer cdstumes and sang songs about the famous character. Cast members included- Jared Mahnensmith as Roger; Brandy Tarvers, Lisa; Sam Rude, Mr Strong; Sarah Williams, Mrs. Strong; Rusty Van Lue, Johnny Appleseed; Cliff Swartz, Chief Chickaue; Luke Matz and Josh Cole, announcers; Tara Miles and Maren Wanggaard, The Yum Yum girls; and Erica Cooper, who presented an apple finger play Completing the unit of study was Johnny Appleseed Day, Tuesday. Sept. 29. The second grade made apple sauce, had apple product tastings, film strips, made an apple recipe book, and listened to a story about apples. A trip to Miller's Apple Orchard in Nappanee is being planned for October 9 to complete the unit.

Aaron Allen said he plays outside, goes to different play stations, colors and paints. He said he hadn’t met many new people and then proceeded to name everyone around him. Carrie Walton said she likes all her kindergarten activities. She said the class colors pictures, does math, has recess, listens to stories and talks about bugs and people. Lindsey Richardson looks on during the experiment, which is being done in Syracuse kindergarten classes to teach the children about smelling, touching, tasting, hearing, and seeing, and how one sense interacts with another.
IN READINESS WE... — Lorena Vallejo is busy working on a class project in readiness class at North Webster. The class has recently worked on the alphabet and letter sounds and has memorized a song for each letter. The students have enjoyed working with plastic letter people and drawing the letters on paper. They are also involved in cutting, pasting, creating pictures, doing number worksheets, and many other projects. Readiness is a class between kindergarten and first grade. (Photo by Carla Gaff) < >
