of Wawasee Community Church of the Nazarene, enjoys her role as pastor’s wife but feels she is really not special. Although she is happily involved in teaching Sunday School and participating in musical aspects of the church, Susanne believes she can best serve as a good example by fulfilling her major role as a good wife and mother. “We are all God’s children and should do the best we can for His kingdom in our daily lives, regardless of our position,” she said. “People seem to accept a pastor’s wife as an individual now more than they used to, not so much as an extension of her husband,” she said. “Although there is a natural tendency for members of a congregation to compare a new pastor and his wife with their predecessors. We’re very happy with the congregation here and look forward eagerly to the days ahead.” “We really like the SyracuseWawasee area,” she continued. "I am especially impressed with the cooperation among the churches in the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association. The trio I sing with at our church has sung several times at one of its special summer activities, the Sunday morning boat-in services at Oakwood Park. I think the boat-in services reach summer visitors who might not otherwise attend Sunday morning worship. ” Susanne said she prefers not being the center of all actions in the church but certainly enjoys working cooperatively with other church members. She earned her degree in elementary education at Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, 111., which is where she met her husband. Having worked in Syracuse as a substitute teacher, she has also . helped teach at Lakeland Community Daycare Center. The pastor’s wife said she feels a real acceptance in this community which is much smaller than Decatur, 111., where she spent her childhood. Ron also grew up in a large city, Fort Wayne. The couple moved to Syracuse over three years ago from a pastorate in Corpus Christi, Texas. They have a 21-month-old son, Bennett James, and have just moved into a new home near South Shore Golf Course.

ARE YOU PREPARED? "So be prepared, for you don't know what day your Lord is coming. "Just as man can prevent trouble from thieves by keeping watch for them, so they can avoid trouble by always being ready for my unannounced return." (Matthew 24.42-44) "So when the bridegroom was delayed, they lay down to rest until midnight, when they were roused by the shout, "The bridegroom is coming: Come out and welcome Him!" All the girls jumped up and trimmed their lamps. Then the five who hadn't any oil begged the Others to share with them, for their lamps were going out. But the others replied, "We haven't enough. Go instead to the shops and buy .some for yourselves." But while they were gone, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with Him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked. "Later, when the other five returned, they stood outside, calling. "Sir, open the door for us!" "But He called back. "Go away! It is too late!" "So stay awake and be prepared, for you do not know the date or moment of My return." (Matthew 25.1-13)

Father Hammond says Pope's visit was an overall plus
| By GLEN LONG Staff Writer Father Robert Hammond, pastor at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, south of Syracuse, viewed the recent visit to the United States and Canada by Pope John Paul II as “overall a plus.” He said that one of the interesting points about the visit was that our country has more variety of cultural environments than others the Holy Father visits. “Our forefathers had the luxury of unlimited land to settle,” srfid Father Hammond. “In the melting-pot of immigration, different old world groups settled in different places. For example, the Irish in New York and other cities and the Germans on farm land further west. The way our country was settled created a pluralism of ideals and beliefs which makes religion in America different.

Pope John Paul 11, coming from behind the iron curtain, observed our differences and the tensions they create very clearly” “As was expected,” Father Hammond continued, “the Holy Father was subjected to some disruptions and demonstrations. I think the news media tended to shape the view the public got of the visit by pointing up the ‘sensational’ or ‘newsworthy.’ Much planned dialog was used by interest groups to capitalize on the air-time.” “The visit was good.” the pastor said, "because in a sense religion is the only sanity in the world and the Pope represents fundamentally good human values. He symbolizes on a worldwide bfisis a unity of awareness of God by all believers.“ Father Hammond concluded by saying that he admired the way Pope John Paul praised

those in America who have helped save refugees from other countries, particularly from countries in Central America. Syracuse-Wawasee Ministers elect new officers The facilities of Millers Merry Manor, Syracuse, were toured recently by members of the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association as they held their September meeting. At the meeting new officers were elected .Ron Blake is president; Sarah Tuttle, vice president; David Maish, secretary; and Mike Johnson, treasurer. Charles Haffner met with the group to request donations from churches toward buying a used fire truck to be transported to a town in the Central America country of Guatemala. The association has been given books by Campus Life which have been placed in the Syracuse Public Library for anyone to read. These include “Parents and Children,” ‘‘Parents and Teenagers” and “Reaching Out To Troubled Youth.” It was reported that mobile meals presently serves seven homes for weekday noon meals. Rev. Arnold Naff will present devotional lessons sometime in September to attendees at the nutrition site in the Syracuse Scout Cabin. Many compliments have been received on the summer boat in worship and appreciation was expressed to Oakwood Park for providing the location, J.C. Mfg. for providing the pontoon, and to all the volunteers who helped with the services. A task force on providing services to the aging is being led by Frank Barcus. Priscilla Rhode is helping conduct a survey to help determine which services should be offered. St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church is donating office space for this project and needs to have a desk donated. The October meeting of the Wawasee Ministerial Association will be held at South Shore Restaurant on Oct. 7.
