Jerry Ganshorn is creatively involved in life
By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer The water laps at the shore as a young boy stands wistfully looking toward the center of the lake where a multitude of boats are zipping along with smiling, happy, people frolicking in them. The young boy is 14-year-old Jerry Ganshorn. He is at the family cottage at Dewart Lake. As he watches the boaters, a young man crawls out of the boat while holding tight to a rope. Slowly at first, the boat begins to move and the young man is pulled swiftly across the water. Profile Seeing for the first time a person water-skiing, may be the cue that drove young Ganshorn to create his own boat, from which he later learned to water ski. “My dad told me he would buy me a motor for my boat if it held water for 24 hours,” commented Ganshorn, (33 years later) in a recent interview. He went on to say his folks purchased the cottage when he was nine years old, and because he’d always wanted to water ski, he built himself a small boat and then, a pair of skis. However, the first motor his father purchased was a 10-horse-power Johnson, which was not big enough to get the boat moving fast enough to keep a skier on top of the water. So, his father felt compelled to do something about the dilemma and purchased a larger motor the following summer. “I’ve always been involved in building something,” assured Ganshorn. Currently Ganshorn is corporation vice president of the Image Group in Syracuse —a present day advertising agency which he became owner ot in when it was Syracuse Quality Printers. “I’ve been at this for 18 years,” said Ganshorn. “I purchased the business shortly after Bart Cox had his heart attack.” In the beginning the business was a type of insta-print shop prin-

mer became the outside person and business manager.” Besides building, creating and founding a business during the last two decades, Ganshorn has also been active in the community. He’s served in nearly all positions in the local Rotary Club and was president in 1972. It was during that year he helped the “Sounds of Hope” get started, as the Rotary Club helped organize the first tour to Europe for the group. In 1973 Ganshorn was president of the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce. “I find myself slowing down just a little,” said Ganshorn with a smile. But to many of those around him, Ganshorn doesn’t seem to be slowing down much and is known as the “old man of the hill” at Mt Wawasee where he’s on the first aid team. Ganshorn became iriferested in snow skiing at a young age and with the expenses of living, he found he could volunteer as a member of the first aid team and ski without a cost to him. Over the years, Ganshorn has been responsible for encouraging many young people to become involved in skiing, many of whom are avid skiers today. “When I first graduated from Ball State, I began teaching industrial arts in Albion,” stated Ganshorn. “After teaching there two years, I went on to teach in Ligonier.” Ganshorn explained that while he was teaching, he started a ski club for his students and encouraged those who were not overly athletic to become involved. “We had some really neat experiences,” conveyed Ganshorn. “It was great to see these kids who had trouble reading and writing become so enthusiastic.” He went on to say, as a teacher he enjoyed helping his students create things with their hands and over the years his classes were involved in graphic arts, photography, printing the school newspaper, creating mini-bikes and a small power ice-boat. Ganshorn and his wife Sue, live at 110 Cherokee Drive on the northeast side of Lake Wawasee. They have two sons, Chris and Tony, to whom Ganshorn is teaching his creative building techniques. Recently the family built a large tree house in an old tree on the edge of their property. However, the house is not like others, in that it is extremely large, has bunk beds, a TV, electricity and a porch around it. Being vieativcly-involved in-all aspects of life is just Jerry Ganshorn’s way, and it’s something he seems to be passing down to the next generation of Ganshorns with pride.
