10 YEARS AGO, AUG. 31,1977 A proposed lease-rental agreement for the physical education facility at Wawasee High School between the Lakeland School Building Corp., of Kosciusko County II and the Lakeland Community School Corporation has been approved by the Indiana State Tax Board of Commissioners. Don Arnold, superintendent, said he received a letter confirming this last Wednesday. This decision came as a result of a remonstrance filediagainst the corporation by Gregory Smith and Don Mort of North Webster in July. E. W. (Gene) Hall, 171 North Shore Drive, Syracuse, was appointed to serve on the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission last Wednesday by the advisory council of towns. A new insurance agency has opened in Syracuse — Funich & Shaw Insurance Agency, Inc., from Fort Wayne, located on SR 13 behind Elder Real Estate. Representing the firm is Harold S. Shaw. He received degrees from Purdue University in both property and casualty and life insurance. Members of the Syracuse Town Board approved the 1978 budget at a meeting Monday night in the town hall. The budget, as advertised, was approved without any changes. It will next go to Warsaw and then to Indianapolis for final approval. In other action brought before the board, John C. Zimmerman was appointed the fifth officer to the police department on a probationary basis. Zimmerman replaces Louis Mediano, who resigned to become Milford’s Town Marshal. Zimmerman, who has been a reserve officer with the Syracuse force since May 13, 1976, wiii assume his hew duties September 1. Carolyn and Dave Smith are planning on renting their Syracuse Lake home and moving to the Wawasee Motel which they’ll call home. 30 YEARS AGO, SEPT. 5,1957 Reading of the proposed ordinance for fire protection of property and health in the town of Syracuse met with some discussion and a few minor revisions at the town board meeting Tuesday evening. Kindergarten classes, which will begin Monday 9 September are planned for 34 weeks. Classes will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There will be a morning class from 9 to 11 and an afternoon class from 1 to 3. Mrs. Jack Stoelting is kindergarten chairman of the sponsoring club, which is the Junior Mothers Club. Mrs. Loren Longenbaugh will be in charge of the kindergarten again this year. The sponsors have announced that there will be a fee of SI.OO a week for each student and a small charge for supplies. Bill Darr, manager of the new Gulf Oil Station at the corner of Huntington and Bent Streets, began operation Labor Day morning. The station is completing new in every respect from its shelving to the overhead equipment.
