Ladies' golf

SYRACUSE — Maxwelton Ladies Golf Association concluded its 1987 season with a closing luncheon. The event was directed by Shirley Quinn. New officers were elected for next season. Lori Welty will be president, while Quinn will serve as vice president. Jane Musser was elected treasurer and Betty Kline, secretary. Inez Beiswanger will be publicity chairman. Prizes for Maxwelton’s recent handicap tournament were presented. Joy Farr was the 18-hole winner with Marg Kavanaugh the runner-up. In nine-hole competition, Quinn took top honors with Peggy Jones finishing second. Beiswanger took the ringer low gross award, while Jones and Betty Slabaugh shared the low net honor. June Lantz had low putts. Slabaugh was voted as the most improved golfer in the league. In 18-hole play, Jackie Wortinger captured the ringer low gross honor with Farr winning low net. Welty won low putts, with Kavanaugh having the season’s low putts. Kavanaugh was awarded the most improved golfer in the 18-hole level. Maxwelton’s league will officially close its play Wednesday, Sept. 3 with an Old Timers Day. Ladies from Goshen’s Maplecrest Golf Club will participate in the event. SYRACUSE — South Shore Ladies Golf league ended its season with an awards ceremony.

Winning the 18-hole first place handicap championship was Jane Wells. Donna Bevington was second. The nine-hole championship went to Jeanette Keim with Ginny DeWitt placing second. In ringer 18-hole competition, Peg Bowland won the A flight division. Ellie Caudill captured the B flight championship, while Patty Van Curen won the C division. Emma Souders won the ninehole competition with Roz Samet placing second. Low putts award in 18-hole A flight went to Bowland, while Caudill took the B flight and Billie Carey paces Warriors at West Noble LIGONIER — Wawasee’s boys’ cross country team opened the season in impressive style Thursday, Aug. 27, with a pair of victories at West Noble. The Warriors bested North Wood 28-29, the battered the host Chargers 17-44. Jeff Carey was the overall champion in the three-way meet with his 16:59 time. Teammate Steve Eastman took fqurth with an 18:02 effort. Eric Mock placed fifth at 18:07, while Cong Reed was seventh. The Warriors open their home schedule and Northern Lakes Conference slate Tuesday, Sept. 8, with Goshen.
