Circus in Syracuse

The Kelly-Miller Brothers Circus will be in Syracuse next Tuesday, Sept. 8, with two shows at 4:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., at the Liberty Lot in Syracuse. The circus is sponsored by the SyracuseWawasee Chamber of Commerce with all profits from the ticket sales to be used to purchase additional Christmas lighting for the town. To help promote the circus “Abra the Magiclown” will be visiting the area elementary schools on Friday. “Abra the Magiclown” will be conducting a 30-40 minute workshop on clowning. He will demonstrate the three basic styles of clown faces, different types of make-up and proper application techniques using students as models. There is also ample time for questions and discussion. This is only the beginning. Syracuse Town Board has proclaimed Tuesday as “Circus Day” in Syracuse. Kathie Yoder, the Sesquicentennial Queen will be the “celebrity rider” on the “Celebrity Elephant.” and a tug-of-war will be featurefl between one of the elephants and some of the finest physical specimens from Wawasee High School and

Items are stolen

Syracuse Police were kept busy over the weekend, with one incident of vandalism, one theft, and one burglary being reported. The theft of a banner (flag) from a pole at the G.L. Xanders residents, East Shore Drive, Syracuse, was reported at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, shortly after the incident occurred. Xanders reported seeing unknown subjects remove the banner, valued at $l5O, by cutting the ropes. The theft remains under investigation by Syracuse Police and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department. A wash basin was pulled away from the wall of the women’s restroom at Henry Ward Park, Medusa Street, Syracuse, sometime Saturday night, Aug. 29, or early Sunday morning, Aug. 30. Police also discovered leaking water pipes at the scene of the incident at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. A Boston Street resident was the victim of a burglary sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.

Vickie Coffee, Syracuse, showed police where someone pried open the back door of her home and took $75 in cash and change from a bedroom dresser drawer. A single barrel shotgun was also moved into another room and unloaded. $4.44 levy is approved by Wawasee School Board

Board members also approved several personnel recommendations. The $8,517,357 budget drew no discussion from school board members prior to its adoption. Expect ruling on Webster case in a few weeks

He noted one affidavit was presented by Dr. Webster two months ago and six were presented by the school corporation several days prior to the hearing. There were no disputes over facts, yet there was one, maybe two areas that were questioned.

Youth center announces activities

The Lakeland Youth Center, Syracuse, has announced the following fall activity schedule: Soccer — Registration for soccer took place August 26 and 27. It is offered to both boys and girls in grades two through eight. The soccer games are scheduled to be held at Vega Field (Syracuse Middle School football field) Saturdays, from September 12 through November 7 (times to be announced later). Chess Club — Once again, the youth center is offering a chess club to students and adults of all ages. This club is for anyone interested in learning chess, playing chess and improving his/her game. The sessions will be held Mondays, September 14 through December 14, 4-6 p.m., at the Lakeland Youth Center with Paul Warrick as instructor. Adult Exercise Classes (Aerobics) — During Session I (September 9 through October 30), the morning exercise classes will be held from 9-10 a.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Lakeland Youth Center with Colleen Schwalm as instructor. The classes are geared towards the low impact aerobics. The evening classes will be geared toward those who want a medium to higher aerobics workout. These classes, which are for both men and women, will be held from September 9 through October 31, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-7 p.m., and Saturday mornings, 8-9 a.m. The classes will be held at the youth center with Barb Troubaugh as instructor. Classes will also be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, 7-8 p.m., from September 9 through October 28, at the youth center. These classes will feature low impact aerobics and will also offer stretching and toning as well. The instructor will be Kristi Bartow. Note: Babysitting will again be offered at the center during evening classes for those children under the age of nine. Judo — This Japanese art of physical endurance and stamina

Milford Town Board adopts J 988 budget as advertised

I By DEB PATTERSON Staff Writer The 1988 advertised budget for the Town of Milford was adopted and signed by members of the town board Monday evening. The budget will now go before the county auditor and state tax commission. Also approved was the cumulative capital improvement sewer fund and an ordinance establishing cumulative capital development fund tax rate at .05 cents per SIOO assessed valuation for 1988, .10 cents for 1989, and .15 cents for 1990. This fund is for the purchase of fire equipment. The 1988 budget for the town is $325,046 with $194,500 to be raised by the tax rate of $2.11 per SIOO assessed valuation. The budget was figured on the 1986, payable 1987 assessed valuation of $8,224,720. A break down of the tax rate shows .93 cents per SIOO assessed valuation, will raise $76,080 of the general fund; .92 cents to raise $75,420 for the motor vehicle and highway fund; .10 cents to raise $9,000 in the cumulative water and sewer fund; .11 cents to raise Generally, the new tax law requires children and other dependents to file tax returns for 1987 if: • they have any investment income, such as interest on savings, and • this investment income plus any wages is more than SSOO. Bakker apparently donated the Rolls to a children’s hospital on March 2, two weeks before he resigned as head of the PTL television ministries.
