Ken Gillenwater believes in the art of Tae Kwon Do
(By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer ' At the tender age of 14 Ken Gillenwater took his first self-defense Kung Fu class in Bluefield, W. Va., which was the spark that started the fire of his interest in the oriental arts. Gillenwater is the founder of the Tae Kwon Do Lions Academy in North Webster. Tae Kwon Do is the art of self-defense through empty hand and foot fighting. It is a sport that can be used for keeping in shape, creating more self-confidence and encouraging better self-discipline. Profile Gillenwater held his first class in North Webster on Jan. 12 of this year with a full roster of students. Classes are for children and adults with a special class in self-defense designed for women. He currently has between 40 and 60 students and will add additional classes if need be, rather than put interested persons on a waiting list. Gillenwater has been teaching in South Bend and Mishawaka for over five years and has a second degree black belt in the art. However, he continues to train under eighth degree Korean Master Jin-Suk-Byun. Additionally, he belongs to the World Tae Kwon Do Federation in Seoul, Korea, and is working on a master’s degree in the art, which he hopes to have within four years. ■ Gillenwater decided to open the school in North Webster after visiting the area with a friend who opened a video store in town. He said the area is ideal because there isn’t another school within 20 miles and many students who had been attending in Syracuse were able to transfer over after the school therexlosed “I found myself teaching more and more children and wasn’t pleased with the way they had previously been taught. Plus, I was finding it hard to work 40 hours a week, keep up with teaching at two different schools, and work in all the training and special skills it takes for me to continue working on my degree,” he stated. Gillenwater quit his full time job and started teaching full time. He is now teaching at three different schools including his own in North Webster. However, Gillenwater doesn’t just train his students, he attends parades and demonstrations with them, as well as taking them to Lions Tae Kwon Do tournaments. Recently the North Webster group returned from a tournament in Illinois with six, first place trophies. ‘There were over 300 competitors that day in forms and sparring, ’ ’ he stated. “I am,very proud, and very pleased and feel the students did very well.” '

LOUISA'S LETTER
Dear Louisa, I go with a boy who brags a lot and 1 was surprised to hear an old aunt of mine say that it was because he had an inferiority complex. It seems to me that a person who boats of what he is and has does so because he feels superior to other people rather than inferior. What do you think? Neighbor, Ind. Answer: On the contrary, those people who brag the loudest are usually those who are not sure of themselves and feel that they Serving our country TIM FULTZ Navy Constructionman Tim Fultz, a resident of Cromwell, recently participated in a Greenstinger Operation with Reserve Naval Mobile Construe tion Battalion-26, Naval Air Facility Detroit, Mount Clemens, Mich. The operation is an exercise conducted by the Navy’s Reserve Naval Construction Battalions to test the unit’s readiness capabilities. The exercise requires the unit to simulate the mobilization of the unit as would be done during a national emergency. He joined the Navy Reserves in December 1985.
During the gathering those family members who have died since the last reunion were announced. They include Joan Spurgeon, Thomas J. Botts, Mrs. Maynard Simpson, William Holtzinger and Milton Williams. Recognition was given to Bowser, who was the oldest present at 69; and Toni Ott, seven, Fort Wayne, the youngest. must make an impression on other people as well as convince themselves. People who come of good stock do not have to spend their time pointing it out to the world nor are they rude enough to discuss the status of others not so lucky. Your aunt is probably right. Louisa. Dear Louisa, What do you think of long engagements?- I have been engaged for five years but whenever I mention the date for our wedding Jim always has a reason to postpone it. He seems to love me but I am twenty five and he is twenty seven? G.C. — Tenn: Answer: You sound as if you were engaged to the permanent bachelor type. If I were you I would set the date and if it didn’t suit him, I would call the engagement off. Louisa. Address letters: Louisa, Box 532, Orangeburg, S.C. 29115 j Ft- Jibifey I* j Uy'yf
