On tke trail of vitamin K
By MARIETTA HENRY A new method of detecting vitamin K has been developed by the US Department of Agricult ure. Vitamin K has been difficult to detect in the blood and therefore, difficult to study because it occurs in such tiny amounts. The new detection method can detect lower levels of the vitamin and analyze up to five times more blood samples a day than previously possible. This new method makes it possible to look at the body’s absorption of the vitamin from foods, and study its ineiauoiism. ine miormation can then be used to set up a recommended dietary allowance for vitamin K. With this new way to measure vitamin K, scientists are ready to start attacking several longstanding bleeding and clotting problems, such as how to balance K intake with anti-clotting drugs. An analysis of blood samples from 341 men and women aged 20-90 years old shows that the average concentration of vitamin Mill's Auto Service (Formerly Mick's) * Full Time Mechanic * Oil & Lubes * Tires & Batteries - PLUS - LUSTER GLAZE * New & Used Car Lifetime Protection USED CAR RECONDITIONING Sup«r Glaze 8 Shield. 1 Yr. K in the blood is a tiny one-half of one billionth of a gram per milliliter. That’s about 1,000 times lower than vitamins A and E. Vitamin K is found in green vegetables, liver, bacon, coffee and tea. This shotild make coffee and tea lovers happy. The bacteria in intestines may also supply some of a person’s vitamin K requirement. Studies are already underway to study the interplay between vitamin K and blood anticoagulants. And more research is due in bleeding disorders, especially in the elderly after an accident or surgery, and in infants.

Due to lack of money, mowing of the Syracuse city park has been halted, reports John Nemeth, member of the park board. Mrs. Betty Dust, ClerkTreasurer, reported to the Syracuse Town Board at its meeting August 16, that money budgeted for mowing the park had been used up and that the town had even gone into debt. The park has been mowed 15 times this year at a cost of $2,113, while only 14 mowings were budgeted at a cost of $2,000. Lakeland students will report to their classrooms for the first time next Wednesday morning as the school bells ring once again. 20 YEARS AGO, AUG. 23,1967 George H. Mr. and Mrs. James Scheuer of Plymouth were Sunday afternoon callers in the home of their son, Larry, Mrs. Scheuer and
children, at Syracuse. 30 YEARS AGO, AUG. 29,1957 Syracuse residents received thru the mail this week a report from Town Board President J. B. Cox on a proposed fire ordinance for the town of Syracuse scheduled for first reading at the next meeting of the Board on 3 September. Mr. and Mrs. William Haas and five daughters,-who have spent the summer here with Mrs. Haas’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Xanders, returned this week to Asheville, North Carolina, where Mrs. Haas is director of the theater.
