I'll II jimulMiW! COMMITTED TO SINGING — The Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse has two different choirs for children, both groups are shown practicing for a special presentation. Children begin singing in the choir at the same time they start school and may continue through their high school years. r
Music in the church: Creating a lifetime commitment for children
(Bv CARLA GAFF _ I Staff Writer In most cases children enjoy music and attempt to sing several years before they’re actually able to carry a tune or remember the words to a song. So, it’s only natural for children to be interested in singing in a choir, and the more the better if it happens to be a church choir. Calvary United Methodist Church Children’s Choir Director Elaine Weiss starts working with children at a very young age and continues with them’up through their high school years. “You would hope that it would be a part of a lifetime commitment,” commented Mrs. Weiss. “It might be a commitment with some holes in it as their high school years are often overly busy, but you like to think they would continue on as adults.” She went on to explain that what often happens is they get into high school and are pulled in so many different directions that some end up dropping out of the church music program. “But, we think we’ve got a solution to that,” she stated, “as we now have choir rehearsals on Sunday mornings when they’d be likely to be already there.” At the Calvary United

Methodist Church there are two choirs for children. One for children in the first through the fifth grade and another for junior high and senior high students. Though the children’s choirs are relatively new at the church, there are approximately 40 children involved. Kl ELAINE WEISS Mrs. Weiss became choir leader at the church two years ago and was asked at that time to develop and start the program. She had served as choir director in Lombard, 111., for 12 years prior to moving to the area and was a public school music teacher. “My feeling about church

music and especially in the case of children, can be summed up in a little Biblical phrase — make a joyful noise,” explained Mrs. Weiss. “They don’t necessarily have to sound like the Vienna Boys Choir. I just tell them that now they have a chance to give back to the church for all the thingsjt has given to them.” She continued with, “Numbers aren't that important but we would like to reach all the children in the church. We’ll be working in a set of chimes this fall which will really enrich the program and the children will get a chance to learn how to play them.” The Calvary children's choirs were recently honored by having a special church song dedicated to them. The song is entitled “Prayer Os The Norwegian Child” and was written by Ruth Artman. Mrs. Weiss concluded, “Working with the Calvary families is really satisfying because they’re very supportive and make sure their children are present for rehearsals and special nursing home outings. The kids get so much out of singing for the elderly. It seems to bring a new understanding to them that they haven’t had previously — it’s just our ministry to our church and our community,” she stated.

Sunday School buses add to Church's outreach
Area churches use many methods to reach out to people in their communities. Included in these are door-to-door canvases to invite residents to attend church and Sunday School, newspaper ads, and Sunday bussring programs to provide transportation to and from the church. , While each outreach method used is valuable in its own way, the furnishing of transportation is a very practical way of showing that a church cares enough to help people, especially children who cannot drive themselves, get to Sunday School and church. Arthur Hershberger, pastor of Milford Chapel Mennonite Church, stated that the church’s big green bus is used primarily to pick up about 20 children and bring them to Wednesday evening Bible memory class, He said it is a valuable tool in their outreach efforts. He feels that all children should have the opportunity to come to Bible study class and the church should logically help get them there. The big Milford Chapel bus is also used to transport church groups to various group meetings and activities and for student transportation to Vacation Bible School in the summer. Brian Wilcox, youth minister at Christian Church of Milford, commented that he is very pleased with the Sunday School bus program at that church. He said that in addition to children who other members bring to church Seeds from the sower Late one night a man was discovered breaking into a church. “What are you doing?" asked an officer. “Looking for a place to pray,’’ he answered. But you can pray anywhere. Jonah prayed in the belly of a fish, Paul in a prison, and the penitent thief on a cross. You can pray anytime. The Psalmist said, “Evening, morning and at noon will 1 pray.” And you can pray in any way. Hannah prayed in silence, Nehemiah in secret, Mary in tears, and Paul in joy. Age doesn’t matter. Children like Samuel, youth like Daniel, and the aged like Moses prayed.

with them on Sunday mornings, the church van makes at least two trips to the church from the Milford and Dewart Lake areas to transport about 27 children to Sunday School each week. He added that, although the church is working toward carrying at least 40 children weekly by the end of this year, it takes a logical approach toward riders from outside the Milford area and attempts to match them with other church members for Sunday morning transportation. The young minister said the outreach program goes beyond those being carried as by attending they have an opportunity to witness to their friends and family members. He closed with the comment, “When it comes to getting people to church and Sunday School, we will hit the needs as they arise and provide transportation for all who need it.” Other area churches are finding their bussing efforts equally valuable in augmenting their outreach programs as they work to spread the gospel. Local ministers attend conference The four ministers of the Apostolic Christian Church in Milford, attended the annual confer en c e of their church brotherhood at Rockville, Conn., during the week of. August 17. After Elder Jesse Beer, Waiter Steffen. Nelson Beer and Will Schieler arrived there on Tuesday, Aug. 18, Jesse Beer flew back to Milford to preach at the Thursday funeral of his uncle, Elmer Haab. He then returned east for the remainder of the conference. Over 650 representatives of Apostolic Christian churches from all over the United States and Japan,' where outreach efforts are centered, attended this year’s conference. Jesse Beer said the committee meetings and general' sessions were well attended, worthwhile and very meaningful as church elders, ministers and the brotherhood of the church spent this time together. The 1988 annual conference will be held in Ohio, having convened in Illinois in 1986. The denomination also holds an annual midwinter conference for elders of its churches.
