It YEARS AGO, AUG. 17,1977 The mural of the famous battle of 1779, which John Paul Jones fought in, was recreated on the wall of Walter’s Drug Store, by Brad Butler, Syracuse. Mrs. Becky Doll donated and helped mix the paint; John Perry is manager of the store. Grandpa and Grandma Burke are living the life of retirees on Waubee Lake, near Camp Mack, until someone demonstrates a need for their experience and services — again. To some they are known as Grandpa and Grandma, to others as Dr. and Mrs. Homer Burke. After serving as missionaries for several decades and retiring several times, only to return when needed, the Burkes agree they are currently

retired. The Mobile Meals unit will be in Milford this week delivering one meal per day to senior citizens on a trial basis. The proposed budget for the Milford library is up four cents — from 13 to 17. Said budget would be based on a total of $14,982. The notice is signed by Harold Young, president of the board; Rowena Gerenscer, secretary; and Herbert Morehouse, treasurer. Awards were given recently at Milford for the girls’ major league play. Winners were Brenda Bucher, Hustle award; Sandra Hernandez, Rookie of the year; Jill Haab, batting; Deb Lechlitner, sportsmanship; and Myra Ruch, Golden Glove.
20 YEARS AGO, AUG. 16, 1967 Cecil’s Foods of Milford began its annual production of tomatoes on Monday of this week. A second shift is expected to be added to the line next week. Mrs. Wayne (Irene) Bucher of near Dewart Lake resigned her post as president of the Kosciusko County Welfare Board on Tuesday to accept a job as part time postal clerk in the Milford post office. Milford Little Leaguers who received the player awards this year: Steve Pippenger, most valuable infielder, Dave Wollman, most valuable catcher; Lyle Slabaugh, most valuable hitter; Stewart Coy, most valuable outfielder; Mark Shearer, most valuable player (includes sportsmanship and attitude throughout the season); and Larry Kaiser, most valuable pitcher. Mr. and Mrs. Miriam Dewart and-children, Mark and Becky, of Syracuse, N. Y., are spending two weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dewart of Waubee Lake, and with Mrs Dewart’s parents and relatives in Indianapolis.

David Beer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Beer, r 2 Milford, sold his champion hereford steer for 36 cents a pound to Kosciusko County Co-Op, Snider and Miller Veterinarians and Sharp’s Hardware at the 4-H county fair livestock auction. Ben Waldbeser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Waldbeser of r 1 Milford, sold Sam, his grand champion barrow at the 4-H auction Thursday night. Sam (215 pounds) was purchased for $2.20 per pound by the First National Bank. 30 YEARS AGO, AUG. 15, 1957 This week end and all next week the Augsburger IGA Store, located on road 15 in Milford, will mark its 21st year of continual business in this community with a giant sale. John F. Augsburger, owner and manager of the store, said the store is easily one of the oldest businesses in this immediate area. Norman Miller, vice president of the Indiana Association of Future Farmers of America, is attending Camp Miniwanca, from August 12 to 25. Camp Miniwanca is located at Stony Lake, Oceana county, Mich.
Special third class John E. Hurd, son of Dr. and Mrs. E. R. Hurd, was scheduled to transfer on Aug. 12, from Kyoto, Japan, where he has been located for the past 14 months, to a new location on the coast of the Japan sea. Amos Steffen was quite proud of a large bass he caught in Waubee Lake last Thursday morning. He said the bass weighed 3 pounds and measured 19'/fe inches long. Weybright seeks state title
Rachel Weybright of Elkhart will be among 16 Area Agency on Aging representatives competing for the Indiana Senior Queen title at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, in the Senior Citizens’ Building at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Weybright was selected to represent Area 2 of the state, which includes Elkhart, Kosciusko, Laporte, Marshall, and St. Joseph counties. Manchester Values Ideas Lectures, films, and three artist/lecture series programs are scheduled for Manchester College’s Fall 1987 Values, Ideas and the Arts program which will be open to the public. Lecture topics range from religion and personal faith to music and an inside look into the Central Intelligence Agency. Bishop John M. D’Arcy, archbishop of the Roman Catholic ( z Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese: \ William Gaston,-director of economics and social program for- the Roosevelt Center for American Policy Studies; and faculty iand students of Bethany Theological Seminary, will all discuss religious topics Two convocations center on music. Former CIA agent, Ralph W McGehee, will present “Deadly Deceit,” an overview and critique of the Central Intelligence Agency made following his 25 years with the federal agency. Manchester College faculty and students will present convocation programs. President William P. Robinson opens the college’s 99th academic year September 2 at 9 o’clock Academic Dean, Dr. Ronald C. Arnett, will deliver the fall faculty series convocation. The director of the program is Charlene Jacobs, who maintains an office at 502 State Office Building, Indianapolis. Cities, schools and local governmental units have saved approximately $660,000 on purchasing vehicles on state contracts this past fiscal year. Examples of a few vehicle savings enjoyed by the political subdivisions include: Mooresville Police Department, savings of $3,000 per unit on police cars; town of Ferdinand, savings of $1,325 on a truck; Clarksville Police Department, savings of $3,464.75 on cars; and town of Monon, savings of $2,500 on a pickup.
