Sunday School important at Bethany Church of Brethren

An important part of the total church program at Bethany Church of the Brethren is its Sunday School program. This program is available for all ages, toddler to adult. F. Wayne Lawson, pastor of the church, which is on US 6 northeast of Milford, commented, “We have a unique situation in our adult classes. Many of our adult members winter in Florida and then in the summer months our adult class attendance about doubles as our people come home. While in Florida, many of them stay in the same area and are able to continue their friendships year around.’’ Bethany has Sunday worship at 9:30 a.m. and then Sunday School

at 10:30 a.m. The worship service includes a children’s sermon for which the younger children come forward and sit with the pastor to hear a story lesson. “It’s interesting to watch the children grow in the church,” said Rev. Lawson. “As they get older they eventually feel they are too old for the children’s sermon and quit coming forward.” He added that this is as it should be and said the pre-teen children have a summer camping program which is one camping week at Camp Mack on Waubee Lake south of Milford. The church also offers a twoda y “beginner’s camp” which allows first time campers to have the experience while only being away from home one night.

The teen-age Members have their own organization, Church of the Brethren Youth Fellowship. They also have a one-week camping outing at Camp Mack. This summer the youth group also took trips to Cedar Point and Indiana Dunes State Park. This active group is involved in two major district fellowship activities each year, called “Spring Ding” and Fall Fling.” The adult classes at Bethany also have periodic group activities, normally a carry-in meal and a time of fellowship together. Pastor Lawson said he is pleased at the number of young families which attend Bethany Church of the Brethren regularly and the many activities there for all ages. Rev. Lawson is in his ninth year as pastor at the church. He and his wife, Alene, have three daughters and three grandchildren. A graduate of Manchester College, he then graduated from Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago and served several other churches in Indiana and Ohio before coming to Bethany Church. Faith and Order Conference set This year’s conference onunderstanding contemporary Judaism will be held on November 4 and 5. It is sponsored by the Department of Ecumenical Concerns of the Indiana Council of Churches. The conference will focus on Christians understanding current expressions of Judaism as lived out in terms of formal statements and day-to-day practices. The experience through discussion promises an arena for coming to grips with the implications emerging from the ever-widening influence of Jewish-Christian dialogue. Conference resouce leader will be Harriet L. Kaufman, who is a nationally recognized teacher of Judaism among Christians. With intellectual brilliance and charming pragmatism she has made presentations at both local and national levels across the United States.

Bible Christian Church is a learning place

| By GLEN LONG Staff Writer Lonnie Nicholl, new pastor of Bible Christian Church, south of North Webster, stated that one of the most important assets of a church is a hard-working, capable staff of Sunday School teachers because a church should be a place for all ages to learn God’s truths well. “I’m sure that all of our teachers put extra time in preparing for their lessons each Sunday,” Pastor Nicholl said. I know that one teacher works on his lessons for four or five hours each week.” The pastor went on to say that he and his wife, Connie, had at one time taught as a team, as he served as assistant with the class. He believes it is important for children to know that men, as well as women, can and should be involved in Sunday School. Lonnie Nicholl has been pastor at this church, which is located just south of CR 500 N on CR 850E, since June 14. His boyhood was spent in Springfield, Ohio. He attended Otterbein College and Cedarville College in Ohio and then came to Kosciusko County in 1976 to attend Grace Theological Seminary at Winona Lake. A 10-year employee at Brock

Manufacturing Inc. in Milford, the pastor, his wife and three children recently moved into the church parsonage on CR 500 N from their home in Bremen. “I had been sending resumes to churches for six years before the opportunity to pastor in this church came,” he said. “There seem to be more potential pastors than available churches. I’m very pleased to be here. These are kind, gentle folks who have all made us feel very much at home.” He added that since he was raised in a Baptist Church, this church, baptistic in its beliefs, is just right for him. For the sacrament of baptism, Bible Christian Church uses another area church baptistry in winter and a local lake in summer. The pastor explained that ordination of an individual is a recognition of the “specific calling of God” to preach the Word. /‘We believe that the Bible is the unerring Word of God. There is less than one tenth of one percent variance in the New Testament, none of which is significant to doctrine,” he stated. "Bible Christian Church does not go out to ‘steal sheep’ from other churches, but we are available for anyone who wishes to join us and worship with us.” Pastor Nicholl said he likes to use

illustrations in his sermons, for which he prepares a minimum of 10 hours each week. He said that illustrations help people remember the real point of a sermon. School bells ringing

i By MARIETTA FULLER I , Guest Writer | J All over the land, school bells ’ ’ will soon be ringing, calling for , the assemblage of students into classrooms to learn from their teachers things essential for life; ' biit we will go now to the greatest ! teacher, Jesus Christ, to learn from Him what is essential for , spiritual life. Jesus said in John 13:34, “A j new commandment give I unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you.” How can we ' love others as Jesus did? Not of ourselves can we do this, but if Jesus lives inside us in the Spirit, ' then He will love others through us. T You are also told to love your enemies, bless those that curse you, do good unto them that hate you and pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you. (Matt. 5:44) In the flesh (that old sin life) it is impossible for us to do this; but in the Spirit it is possible. We have these words in Mark 9:41: “For whosoever shall give unto you a cup of water to drink in My name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. Even the smallest service, when done in the Spirit (Christ’s name), shall not lose its reward. Jesus said in Luke 6:38: “Give andL it shall be given unto you . . .’’Those in the flesh or sin will be selfish people; but those in Christ will be giving people. They will give of themselves to others in kind deeds and of their substance in the spirit of love. No one can outgive God for He gives back according to their measure of service. All of these 7 sayings 'pqint out the importance of being filled with the Spirit. In John 15:5, Jesus said,/ Without Me ye can do nothing.” And so, unless we have Jesns living His life through us, our litas are without meaning and purple. As King Solomon said, “It is vaiiity.” It is a useless and wasted life.X Mail fraud at PTL *FORT MILL, S.C. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell said postal authorities have confirmed they are continuing a criminal investigation of the previous PTL administration for mail fraud, but he said he hopes defrocked minister Jim Bakker does not go to prison.

When we are filled with the Spirit, we love others, have joy, walk in the Spirit, are led by the Spirit, serve God and earn rewards, witness for Jesus and God and can have the fruits of the Spirit which are love, joy, peace, long suffering or patience, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. (Gal. 5:22-23) How then, can we be filled with the Spirit? Eph. 5:18 says, “Be Filled with the Spirit.” According to Dr. Billy Graham in his book, “The Holy Spirit,” we must be controlled by the Spirit. “Yield yourselves to God” (Rom. 6:13). Therefore, after asking to be filled, add such things as “Help me to live right today,” “Might Thy will be done in my life,” “I submit my life into Your hands,” etc. To be greater filled and controlled by the Spirit we sing religious songs or speak in Psalms (Eph. 5:19) and thank God (Eph. 5:20). Jesus has given us a priceless lesson through His teachingsthat of a spiritual and abundant life. The classroom never ends for believers, for the Bible says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God” (2 Timothy 2:15).
