It happened in Syracuse
10 YEARS AGO, AUG. 10,1977 Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kline of Syracuse were taken out to dinner in Syracuse recently by their children and grandchildren in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary. The former Nellie Spencer and Herman Kline were married August 10, 1937, in Geneva. They have lived in Syracuse for the past six years. Herman Kline is a carpenter in the Syracuse area. The Klines’ children and their spouses include: Jerry and Lynn Kline of Jackson Township, Larry and Sondra Moser of Wanatah and Don and Kay Harley of Syracuse. A total of seven grandchildren also attended. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Welker of 304 W. Section St., Milford, announce the engagement of their daughter Lorraine Lee to Dan J. Chamberlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Chamberlin of 116 Portland St., Syracuse. Two of the three appointments made from the Syracuse Town Board to the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission were made during a special meeting last night. Board members appointed David Nine to the council of small towns. Nine is a town board member, and the council will in turn make an appointment to the commission before their September meeting. Mrs. Betty Dust was elected by the board to serve as one of its representatives to the commission. Wiley (Bill) Spurgeon was reelected president of the Wawasee Property Owners Association at a meeting Thursday night, Aug. 4, in the First Charter Insurance building. Other newly elected officers include: V. Logan Love, MD — Vice president; Marilyn O. Greighner — secretary; Meyer Maidenberg — Treasurer; Sharron Faris — re-approved for executive director. Approximately 200 citizens were on hand at 10 a m. yesterday (Tuesday) in Wawasee High School auditorium to speak out and hear both sides as to why the proposed physical education facility for Wawasee High School should or should not be built. The meeting was held in response to a remonstrance filed four weeks ago by Gregory Smith and Don Mort of North Webster who opposed the building of the facility. Robert Ferrier and Robert Augspurg, field representatives for the state tax board of commissioners, were on hand to hear both sides. They will not take the information back to the state tax board for its final decision. The Syracuse budget for 1978 may increase four cents if the proposed levies are approved. The current rate is $2.04. The proposed rate is $2.09. The proposed rate would give $1.02 to the general fund to raise $88,280 with the current rate being $1.26. The proposed rate in the street fund is 91 cents to raise $78,758 with the current rate being 63 cents. The proposed budget calls for a 15 cent levy in cumulative capital Leisure Living Board has new member The board for Leisure Living Apartments, Milford, held its monthly meeting Monday, Aug. 10. Don Ahrns replaces Rev. Paul Tinkel as member of the board. Rev. Tinkel resigned for personal reasons. The board has not heard from the state on a tax emption for the complex. There are three people on the waiting list for an opening. The board also went over and revised the bylaws. Members will study and approve them at the next meeting which will be held September 14 at The Papers Incorporated. The public is welcome to attend. improvement to raise $12,982 and a one cent levy in criminal justice to raise $865 for a total levy of $2.09 to raise $180,886. The current budget has a 15 cent cumulative fire levy and totals $2.04. 20 YEARS AGO, AUG. 9,1967 One of the worst wind storms in several years hit Syracuse at 9:20 Thursday night. Seconds after the storm hit, 50 per cent of the area homes were without electricity. NIPSCo had a man on duty in the uptown office receiving calls of power failure and lines down. The fire department also received calls of lines down, where there was danger of fires. The NIPSCo line crew worked throughout the night repairing lines. Leaves and small branches were in yards and streets and a number of limbs were blown down. On Friday the street department workers were busy cutting and hauling limbs. The damages caused by the power failure was not estimated but would be in the thousands of dollars. Wawasee high school is presently on schedule according to a statement made by Bart Wade of Maurer, Inc., in his progress report Tuesday evening. Wade was reporting to members of the Lakeland school board at their regular August meeting. He continued the footings were 76 per cent completed and the concrete 75 per cent with the only thing not started being the swimming pool. During the past eight weeks of summer, approximately 112 students participated in summer music lessons at Syracuse school. In order that parents and other interested persons may hear the results of the eight week period, the director of band and choir of Syracuse high school, William E. Crowder has scheduled a public performance on August 9, at 8 p.m. It will be in the cafeteria. The performance will last approximately one and one-half hours. “Syracuse is a clean little town. It’s neat and that’s the way I like to keep the depot. It’ll look better here when I get the weeds mowed.” The speaker was Damon Casey, station master at the Syracuse Baltimore and Ohio depot. Although only 33 years old, Casey has been working for the railroad for 16 years. And he believes in keeping a depot neat and clean. The office of the superintendent of the Lakeland Community School Corporation has announc-
