He is pictured here with Angie Wiggs, daughter of Gary and Mary Wiggs of Syracuse; and Jerry, the donkey. Givens has portrayed four Bible characters, including Jesus and His father, Joseph, for over three years. In 1986 alone he presented 150 performances at area churches. Elders offer a 'helping hand' at Wawasee Community Bible
By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer “Church leadership is really different from other types of leadership,’’ explained elder of the Wawasee Community Bible Church Ned Speicher, “it’s more of a helping hand. It’s kind of like a chain effect, in that you help by pulling members along if they need it, but don’t push them.’’ The Wawasee Community Bible Church is newly founded and is currently in a building program. Officials are hoping to move into the new facility in the fall of this year. Although the church can be considered a young one, it has approximately 250 members with five ordained elders. Each elder is ordained though a process of being selected by the congregation, attending and being part of an ordination service, and praying with the congregation and elders previously instated. “It’s a very solemn, religious moment,” commented Speicher. The church works on a ratio of 40-50 members per every one elder, but is not obligated to having five elders. As the number of members in the congregation fluctuates so does the number of elders. He went on to explain, “The elders in our church are basically there to meet the spiritual needs of the congregation, and they United Methodist Church news Milford United Methodist Church will have worship service at Lakeland Loving Care Nursing Home on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 4:30 p.m. The United Methodist Men (UMM) will have a breakfast at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16. feed the flock, teach and instruct, exhort and encourage. ” In this, he said, “We believe the church elder’s image should be much like a father image, helping hand, or arm around the shoulders type of thing. Elders are not to be some stem type of individuals who pushes on people or keeps a thumb on them to keep them in line,” Speicher said. “I really see the need for an out reach for more of the love of God.” The qualifications of elders at the Wawasee Community Bible Church are determined though the use of scriptures in I Timothy and Titus. BK K fl CHURCH ELDERS REACH OUT — The job of elders in the Wawasee Community Bible Church is to reach out and contact people, stated church elder Ned Speicher. “The ultimate importance is feeding the flock.” The church is a very young one, having only been in the community for 11 months, although the membership is a climbing one and has recently reached 250.
