Skaggs earns Maxwelton championship
Terry Skaggs, Syracuse, earned the Maxwelton Club Championship by defeating Scott Norris of Kimmell 2-1 in the 18-hole play Sunday, Aug. 2. Skaggs, earlier this summer, won the South Shore Club Championship. Norris was the defending Maxwelton Club champion. Skaggs played his way into the championship round by defeating Jeff Moore of Kimmell and Rick McKibben of Syracuse. Norris defeated Roger Bronsink of Goshen and Doug Vanette of Ligonier to get into the finals. Against Vanette, Norris fired a 66, which included nine birdies. However, against Skaggs, Norris didn’t have the same fortune. The final round saw several lead changes, witnessed by only three ties throughout the match. Norris took a three-stroke when he eagled the par-five seventh hole. But Skaggs didn't quit. Instead, the Syracuse resident won the next four holes to lead by one stroke. Skaggs increased his lead to two strokes after 14 holes when Norris suffered a bogey. Skaggs put the contest out of reach by playing par-golf the remaining holes. Action in other flights saw Mike Babcock, New Paris, defeat Dean Wallace of Goshen, one-up in 19 holes of the B flight. The C flight finals had Howard Putman of Millersburg defeating Ladies' golf
MILFORD — The Big Boulder Belles golf league competed Wednesday, July 29. Below are the results from the event. Winning low gross was Bonnie Newman with second low gross going to Evelyn Orn. Janet Brandon took low net honors, while Peg Custer had the second low net. Low putts was turned in by Barbara Schultz, with Helen Hay having second low putts. SYRACUSE - The South Shore ladies league completed league action Tuesday, with the play of the day being best ball. Winning the 18-hole event were Bonnie Cantwell, Lavonne Gar, Evelyn Marlin and Jan Maher. Low gross went to Donna Bevington in regular play while Maher had low net and Peg Bowland, low putts. In nine-hole play, Jo Waltz and Ginny Dewitt shared low gross honors. Jeanette Keim has low net, while Ann Harter captured lbw putts honors. Jim Johnson, Syracuse, one-up, and Stan Rensberger, Syracuse, won the D flight over Monte Abbs, one-up in 19 holes. In other golf action, South Shore pro Darrell Krugman, and former Wawasee golfer Brian Beatty, successfully qualified for the Indiana State Open Golf Championship, held this year at the Honeywell County Club in Wabash. Krugman qualified for one of the 23 positions in the State Open by firing rounds of 70-79. Seventyfour players attempted to qualify for the state meet.

The event will be held at Huntington’s Norwood Country Club. Beatty, who now plays for the DePaul University golf team, earned his spot in a special qualifier held at the Honeywell Course Friday, July 31st. Beatty fired a 69 to earn one of the four spots in the 32-man field. Krugman and Beatty begin play in the 160-man field Monday, Aug. 10. The field will be cut after Tuesday’s round to 60 players, who then will play 18 holes Wednesday and Thursday to determine the winner in the State’s most prestigious event.
