Church janitors are special people

(By CARLA GAFF I Staff Writer Every church has that special person who spends loving time cleaning, polishing, sweeping and tidying up around the pews, in the classrooms, kitchen and in all the corners. That special person at the Leesburg United Methodist Church is Don Kaiser. ‘ Kaiser has been a member of the Leesburg congregation for 61 years and started attending at the tender age of 6 years. Win-Some Women to hold fall retreat

“Challenge to Live, Grow, Praise and Serve” is the theme for this year’s Win-Some Women Fall Retreat to be held October 2-4. Meetings will be held in Rodeheaver Auditorium, 9th St. and Park Ave., Winona Lake. This is the 39th Win-Some Women retreat to be sponsored by a staff of local women who felt the need for fellowship in this area. The women strongly felt God’s leading to incorporate and plan the first retreat in the fall of 1968. Though underwritten by no group, by faith these women scheduled their retreat and watched God work in providing the

We are all occasionally tempted to renounce the human race; a normal reaction to our own experience as well as all the horror stories in the news about abandoned babies, mistreated animals, vandalism, the drug scene, and so on. However, let us remember that there are still a lot of good people around, including us. We should regard ell of this as a mandate to fight those evils any way we can, with letters to the editor and our elected officials, and a willingness to get involved by helping to prevent crime, among other things. Above all, let us turn to faith and pray at our House of Worship for the courage and ability to reverse this trend that threatens to(plunge us back into the dark ages. The more hopeless it seems, the harder we must strive to restore love and goodness to the world. It can be done, if enough of us will stop cursing the darkness and start lighting that candle.

Indiana's religious services to be documented in Sept.

The variety of ways by which Hoosiers exercise their freedom of religion will be documented by a unique project sponsored by the Indiana Religious History Association in recognition of the bicentennials of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and the U.S. Constitution. The project, “Documenting Freedom of Worship in Indiana," will involve tape recording a large number of worship services during the week of Sept. 20 to 26, 1987. Project director Edwin L. Becker estimates that 10,000 religious groups worship regularly in the state and he encourages all religious groups, denominations and organizations which conduct religious services to participate in the project. There is no charge and high quality fhpes will be furnished to participating groups. Freedom of religion was asserted in the familiar first amendment to the Constitution,

but even more sweeping in its intent was the first article of compact between the 13 original states and the people of the territory of the United States northwest of the Ohio River. That article proclaimed. “No person demeaning himself in a peaceable and orderly manner shall ever be molested on account of his mode of worship or religious sentiments in the said territory.” Materials gathered will be deposited at the Indiana Historical Society where they will be accessioned, catalogued, stored and made available to the public through the society's library. The project is being made possible by a grant from the Lily Endowment. For more information about participating in the project, contact the project director, Dr. Edwin L.
