Robinson's five-hitter tames Sox
DETROIT — Detroit rookie Jeff Robinson pitched a fivehitter and Darrell Evans blasted a solo home run as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 at Tiger Stadium. The win, coupled with New York’s 2-1 victory over Kansas City, kept the Tigers one-half game behind the league-leading Yankees. It was Detroit’s fifth straight win, and 10-out-of-12. Chicago’s Bill Long suffered the heart-breaking loss, despite throwing a three-hitter. Robinson, 7-4, struck out a career-high 10 batters while walking one for his first complete game victory. Detroit scored all the runs it needed in the third. Pat Sheridan opened the inning with a walk, took second on Tom Brookens’ single to right, and scored when Lou Whitaker hit a grounder and second baseman Fred Manrique came off the base attempting to force Brookens. Both runners moved up when Long’s pickoff attempt hit Brookens and sailed into center field for an error. Brookens scored on Bill Madlock’s groundout. Evans’ homer gave Detroit a 3-0 and Chicago scored a single run in the fifth. YANKEES 2, ROYALS l:Rick Rhoden (13-6) scattered eight hits

runs, two earned, and eight hits in seven innings of work. Lee Smith pitched the final two innings for his 25th save. Jeff Reed had three errors in the seventh for the Expos, tying a modern-day major league record for errors by a catcher in an inning. Cincinnati’s Andy Seminick was the last to accomplish the feat, setting the mark July 16, 1952. LINEBACKERS Indiana’s deepest position. Brad Mitchell and Willie Bates are two year starters and both fighting to keep their starting position in spite of Honorable Mention from the coaches last year and improvement over 1986. Larry Luther was shifted from noseguard to linebacker and this sth year senior has been better every year. Brad Money the Michigan All-Stater has had starts before and has some

developing to do but he had a bit spring and is making a real run for the starting position. If he can pick up strength this summer Bates will have his hands full. In any event this is two deep and then there is Rod Rydzewski who also has two letters at the position. These are backed by some good ones. Kevin Kelly is tough. He is Walter Payton’s workout partner and has that work ethic. Darren Bush was the first player in his class to start. If he gets himself under control he has great ability but gets over emotional at times. The freshman class has a wealth of potential star linebackers. Jim Summerall from Lauderhill, Florida has people tooting his horn as tops. Bo Belden from Carmel is one of the state’s top players and joins with Mark Hagen, also from Carmel as the top duet in the state last year. The sleeper might be Andy Imes from Lawrence North in Indiana. In any event we have depth in linebacking experience, size quality people and incoming frosh. cornerbacks figure to be Eric Coleman and Ziegler with Derrick Jackson hard on the heels of both. Coleman will be in his third starting season. He and Ziegler both missed Cream & Crimson with injuries but figure to be full bore by fall. They are not big but they are quick and speed is the important factor here. Joe Ziegler moved into No. 1 cornerback when Eric Hickerson had grade problems. If Hickerson returns he may stay there in order to make use of his talents as well as Hickerson and let Hickerson go to safety and Hickerson cannot be counted upon until he makes those grades. Ziegler does not scare me but injuries do. Andre Hall is backing Ziegler and has three years on the squad to put in his experience chart. He figures to play some but here our question marks pop up, Three unknowns have a chance to make the traveling squad but all are yet to be tested. Geutreiter is a freshman in eligibility, Reiesert and Roberts are sophomores as is John Folz. Here is another position that a freshman may play instead of redshirting and again think of Dumas and Mason from out of state or Brown from
Baseball in a different light
This is my most enjoyable time of the year. Warm weather provides opportunities for outside recreational hobbies and the August heat lends suspense to major league baseball’s hot pennant races. This season will be no exception. At last look, at least 10 teams in the major leagues have legitimate chances at winning a divisional title. Some are better bets than others, but, nonetheless, all are within striking distance of the crown. My hope — in major league baseball — this summer is resting with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers started out terribly, falling 10 games off the pace in early May. But, in the Tigers' last 61 games. Detroit has won 46 —a .754 winning clip. Shades of 1968 and 1984. But baseball is more than winning pennants, it’s also an individual game. Statistics prove this point. Last weekend 1 received some interesting stats from Danny Trier, a 14-year-old computer whiz kid friend of mine. Trier resides in Bloomdale, Ohio —a hick town if I ever saw one. But anyway. Trier, like his family, supports the Detroit Tigers. Because of his interest in the Tigers, and major league
Maconaquah or Newell from Columbus, Indiana. DEFENSIVE TACKLES In 1986 IU had relatively small defensive tackles, short on experience and short on numbers. This year the three sophomores are juniors, the three redshirted freshman are there and improved, we have added a junior colege defense man and a huge, fast potential All-American high schooler. Walter Harris, Dan Bauer and Doug Schlereth were pushed around last year. They were all sophomores and all needed some time in the weight room. This year they are bigger, stronger and experienced. It looks as though Walter Harris is ready to make a name for himself as a tackle. He had an excellent spring game and overall spring. He has filled out some, strengthened up and is ready to go. Dan Biuer had the instincts, the heart and the aggressiveness but he too was short on experience, size and strength. He has added 18 pounds is stronger and can now be classified as experienced. With Doug Schlereth on the other side of him at the other tackle we look to improve up front. Schlereth has been the steady tough competitor since his freshman year and overall the most dependable. Three 1986 redshirts are now ready to make their mark and are showing strong evidence that they will contribute greatly. Nolan Harrison, Hunnicut and OMalley are about ready. Harrison appears to be out front of these three but Hunnicut had an outstanding spring game. These three plus JC James Sams give us more depth than we had last year and they will be joined by the player that I think most likely to help next year from our incoming freshmen. He is Dane Kemp, all 6 ft. 7 and 290 of hard muscle pounds. All in all this could be the most improved position on the team.
baseball, Trier provided me with percentages backing up potential record-breaking feats in baseball. The list of accomplishments include pitching and hitting records that modern day players may reach in their careers. The basis for Trier’s calculations are from Bill James' 1985 Baseball Abstract. Let's take a look at Trier's projections — and the game in a different light. In the pitching category. On The Mark MAUK ■ WEINSTEIN R Detroit’s Jack Morris leads the list of pitchers likely to win 200 games in a career. Trier gives Morris a 92% likelihood of accomplishing the feat.. Others listed include Fernando Valenzuela, 76%; Dwight Gooden, 74%; Frank Tanana. 64%; Mike Witt, 54%; Roger Clemens, 47%; Bob Knepper. 45%; Ron Guidry. ’4%; Doyle Alexander. 42%; nd Dennis Eckersley, 41%. The percentages seem high in the 200-win plateau. They drop considerably when a pitcher goes for 300. In this category. New York Mets' Gooden has the best Chance at the Hall of Fame total with a 43% possibility. Valenzuela is given a 38% chance, while Bert Blyleven, 37%. Morris, 33%; Frank Viola and Witt. 30%; round out the top five. Others listed are Clemens. 29%; Kirk McCaskill, 25%; Ron Darling, 24%. and Teddy Higuera. 24% A pitcher is definitely evaluated by wins and losses. But another' impressive mark is strikeouts. Let's look at those most likely to surpass the 3,000 strikeout barrier. Gooden, heads the list, although he shares the honor with Valenzuela — both having a 56% chance at the mark. California's Witt is third at 38%. while Morris is at 31%, and Clemens. 30%. Minnesota's Viola is sixth at 30%. Tanana, 27%; McCaskill. 27%; DaveStieb. 26% ; and Bruce Hurst, 26%. The figures drop considerably when pursuing the 5.000 strikeout plateau. It makes sense. Gooden, obviously, has the best shot at 5,000 K’s — but with only a 30% chance. Valenzuela is second at 26%; Nolan Ryan — already surpassing 3,000 strikeouts — is given a 21% chance; Witt, 20%. and Clemens rounds out the top five with a 17% chance. In the second five. Viola, McCaskill. and Blyleven all have a 16% chance at the historic figure . Morris has 15%; Higuera, 14%; and Hurst, 14%. In the hitting side. Trier calculated two interesting aspects of the game — total hits and home runs. Trier's top 20 players aiming at 3,000 hits include the player most likely to reach the figure — New York Yankees’ Don Mattingly, The Yankee firstbaseman is given a 53% chance at reaching the mark. The way he hits, there seems no reason why he will not reach 3,000. Jim Rice was a surprising second at 46%. Personally, I thought Wade Boggs would be second, but the Boston player is . urth. Milwaukee’s Robin Yount is third at 43%; Boggs and San Diego’s Tony Gwynn are fourth at 39%. Kirby Puckett and Tim Raines are sixth, 38%; Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken, 37%; Harold Baines and Julio Franco, 36%; Alan Trammell, Steve Sax, and Ryne Sandberg. 34%: George Brett, 33%; Lou Whitaker, Dale Murphy, Keith Hernandez, Rickey Henderson, and Tony Fernandez, all 32%. Stepping up the criteria to 4,257 Area Golf
MILFORD — Betty Scott took home los gross honors Wednesday, July 22, in Big Boulder’s Belles golf league. Leatrice Rapp placed second. Low net honors went to Scott, while Marilyn Bray charted second low net. Rapp and Peg Custer tied for low putts, and Janet Brandon had the second low figure in putts. □ MILFORD - Big Boulder Golf Course will hold a two-man scramble Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Milford course. The event will start at 12-noon. I'
hits, 20 players have an outside chance of reaching the milestone. Can you guess the most-likely hitter that could accomplish the feat? Mattingly!! The Yankee slugger has a 31% chance at putting his name in the record books with this hit total. Puckett and Gwynn are second, both at 25%. Boggs and Ripken share the fourth slot. 24%, while Raines and Franco are sixth at 23%. Rounding out the remainder of the list are Sax. Baines, and Fernandez, 22%; Sandberg. 21%; Trammell, George Bell. Wally Joyner, 20%; Kent Hrbek, Murray. Juan Samuel. Yount, and Henderson. 19%; Whitaker. Rice, Murphy. Lloyd Moseby, Ozzie Guillen, and Pete Incaviglia, 18%. Finally, let's take a look at the home run hitters in the game today. This statistical breakdown features players likely to hit 500 and 756 home runs in their career. „ First, the 500 home run level. Atlanta's Dale Murphy was cited by Trier as having the best shot at 500 round-trippers — given a 42% chance. Mattingly, perhaps the best hitter in the game today, has a 37% chance; Darryl Strawberry and Incaviglia. 34%; Jesse Barfield and Rice. 33%; Murray. 32%; Tom Brunansky, 30%; and Hrbek and Ripken round out the top 10 at 29%. The bottom 10 includes George Bell and Gary Carter. 28%; Lance Parrish and Bob Horner. 27%; Steve Balboni, 26%; Kirk Gibson. Jose Canseco, Jim Presley, and Baines, 25%; and Glenn Davis, Mike Marshall, and Ron Kittle, 23%. Reaching the major league record is another story. Still, some players have a legitimate shot at the record. None more, though, than Mattingly. The Evansville native has a 22% chance at the record. He shares the spotlight, though, with Texas.' Incaviglia. Strawberry and Murphy are third at 20%; Barfield. 19%; Hrbek. Bell, Brunansky, and Ripken. 17%; Canseco. Presley, and Balboni, 16%; Gibson and Murray. 15%; Lance Parrish, Gary Gaetti. Baines. Davis. Horner. Joyner, Marshall, and Kittle, all 14%. Very interesting figures! They mean little in a hot pennant race, but have meaning to the players Trier, as you can see, is a very interesting young man. He’s bright, unquestionably quite intelligent. and a quality teen. Hopefully, he’ll continue feeding me with interesting sports notes. We’ll just have to wait and see.
