CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS SERVICES EVERY DAY - Saint Martin dePorres Catholic Church in Syracuse now has three Sunday mass services, as well as a service each of the other six days of the week. Because of the large number of parishioners and visitors during the summer months the church increases the number of Sunday masses it holds. (Photo by Carla Cass)

Catholic church increases services during summer months

(By CARLA GAFF Staff Writer “During the summer season our congregation more than triples on weekends, as compared with mid-winter,” commented Father Hammond of the Saint Martin dePorres Catholic Church in Syracuse. The church may have as many as 1,000 persons in attendance during Sunday morning masses in the summer. However, the number is split into three different services as the church cannot hold the large number at one time. Additionally, Father Hammond stated many persons like to come to early morning mass in the summer so that they can get out on the lake early. The first session of summer mass starts at 7:15 a.m. with the second and third sessions following two hours and four hours behind. The summer mass schedule starts pn the Sunday after Memorial Day and runs through the Sunday after Labor Day. When the church isn’t participating in its summer schedule, mass is held twice on Sunday, with the first session at 8 a m. and the second at 10:45 a m. Father Hammond reported

that the church doesn’t have communion only on Sundays, but, communion services are actually held every day of the week and that during the summer months most all services have increased numbers. He went on to explain, “We put out temporary seating in the aisles, and do the best we can to park overflow vehicles in the grassy area east of the church “We get people from Chicago, Lafayette, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and so forth,” said Father Hammond, “and may easily have 500 in attendance at our 9:15 a.m. service. During our July 4 service, we had people sitting in the pews, standing and sitting in the aisle, as well as standing on the side walk and downstairs. We’d need to expand the church if it was like this year around, but it’s not, it’s temporary during the summer,” he said. The church has a comfortable capacity of approximately 300 persons, which is what it runs during the winter months. Additionally, during the summer the church holds a day of prayer for members and visitors. This year the service will be held at Noll Hall on Lake Wawasee Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m un-

til 3 p.m. Father Steve Morrison will be in charge of the service. The theme for the day will be, “Turn to me and be saved; a new look at prayer.” Other special services held by the church include its Catechismal program which will start on August 6 and run through the winter months. On the first Sunday of Lent, those who wish to do so may begin the immediate' - process of being received into the church community with actual reception taking place on the vigil of Easter. The church also has a number of other activities, with one coming up very soon in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus. The Knights are a Catholic men’s organization, which will be holding a pancake and sausage breakfast at the church after the two early m'orning mass services. Father Hammond stated the public is invited to the breakfast which is an all you can eat type of thing. Saint Martin dePorres Catholic Church in Syracuse, is truly a congregation that enlarges during the summer months, both in number of services and parishioners.

August vacation Bible schools

While many area churches held their Vacation Bible Schools in June and July, others have scheduled them in August. One of these, Bethany Church of the Brethren, on US 6, will have its VBS on August 3 to 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. Classes will be included for ages three years to adult. The theme of the children’s classes is “Exploring the Fruit Os the Spirit” and the adult classes will have a Bible study of I Corinthians. The closing Bible School program will be included in morning worship on Sunday, Aug. 8. Marketplace 29 A.D. As August 6,7 and 8 are fast approaching, Alesia Kiser and Jackie Plikerd, coordinators for th<) Syracuse area churches’ united Vacation Bible School program, continue to recruit mothers to assist with the adventure. Kiser said over 210 children are enrolled in the joint program being sponsored by the SyracuseWawasee Ministerial Association. She said that 45 adults will be needed to help manage the event and added that there are still some openings that urgently need to be filled.

A heavenly wedding

I By Marietta Fuller (iuest Writer Os course, weddings on eartlj are wonderful, but we are thinking about a heavenly wedding, that of believers in Christ, "the bride,” and Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom. After we sinners receive Christ into our hearts, we become a part of the body of Christ, the Church, and are engaged on this earth. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “for I have espoused you to one husband that I majt present you as a chaste virgin to Christ ill Cor. 11:2). Instead of an engagement ring, we are sealed immediately upon belief in Christ by the Holy Spirit, which signifies that we belong to Christ. Just as an earthly bride lives to please her husband, a believer’s life is given to Christ , Just as the bride begins to think of' her wedding garment, so should we. the 'bride of Christ” be thinking of ours. too. According to Dr. Jack Van Impe. in the "Walking Bible," his tapes and

Marketplace 29 A.D. is based on the concept that we remember things more easily if we experience them ourselves. Representatives of area churches have been working to create a realistic market place at Oakwood Park that will teach about life in Biblical days. At the beginning of each day the children will meet for a “synagogue” experience before going to their respective tents. The children will be grouped into tribes, with each tribe having a tent with a banner Infront declaring its tribal name. While in the family tent, they will experience Jewish traditions such as the blessing said over the havdalah candle and the mezuzah which the children rub each time they enter the tent. As in any family, the children will perform daily chores like baking bread (from a mix), sweeping the tent and fetching water from the well. Then the children are free to go to the marketplace where there will be many shops. There will be a jeweler, baker, kite maker, carpenter, candy man, potter, scribe, basket weaver, stone cutter musical instrument maker ar veaver The children will

books on revelation, we are now engaged in the making of our wedding garment for it is a fabric woven by our deeds of love for Jesus, our Bridegroom. To know Him is to love and serve Him as we learn daily of His will through the words of the Bible and obey them We are admonished to live holy lives ( I Thess. 2:12) White is the earthly wedding color standing for purity and faithfulness. Likewise, the "bride" has made herself ready; "and to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white, for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints" < Rev 19:8). In earthly weddings all eyes are on the lovely bride; but not so with the heavenly wedding lor Jesus Christ is the loveliest of lovely (Song of Solomon >. Since the wedding takes place in Heaven and the Old Testament and Tribulation Saints (the other sheep of His fold Jn. 10:16) are part of the earthly habitation, the marriage supper must take place on earth.

become apprentices for a part of each day.

During the day there will be drama presentations and appearances by th& beggar and the tax collector. There will also be a donkey caravan to the storyteller’s tent. On Saturday, Jesus will be a special guest just as He might have been in a Palestinian village. At noon on Saturday, families of the attendees will be bussed to Oakwood from Wawasee High School for an authentic Jewish meal and to take part in the afternoon’s activities, which will include a Hebrew song and dance time and grand finale comments from several area ministers. Church representatives who have helped “put it all together” are Kaz Szynal and Ann Haffner, St. Martin dePorres; Sharon Wright and Anita Bjella, Church of the Brethren; Penny Plikerd, Alesia Kiser and Jackie Plikerd, Syracuse Church of God; Peggy Thomas and Jay Hughes, St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church; Diane Grothaus and Becky Thomas, Calvary United Methodist Church; Kim Kathary and Meredith Mignery, Rock Church; and Karen Cox and Pam Rassi, Lakeside Chapel.

The bride walks down the aisle to meet her bridegroom; but the "bride of Christ" (the Church) is going on the biggest space trip ever; for in the twinkling of an eye. countless numbers of glorified bodies will zoom into the clouds to meet Jesus there and go home with Him. (I Thess 4:13-18). A thousand yea* (millenial) honeymoon sets in for the Lamb and His “bride" as they reign on earth (Rev. 20:2). Then, follow ing a sequence of events as given in Rev 20. a new heaven-a nd a new earth is created with "the Holy City, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." (Rev 21:1). The Bridegroom takes His "bride" home to those mansions He has prepared (Jn. 14:2) in the New Jerusalem hovering above the earth Friends, this truly is the marriage of all marriages, for it is forever, for an eternity. It is a heavenly wedding!
