THE COOKIE LADY — Irene Foreman stands by the mountain of flour in her pantry. The 200 pounds won’t last more than a month she stated, homemade noodles use a lot of flour. She has sold cookies, noodles and sweet breads in the area for over 10 years, starting out in .North Webster and including the Warsaw area, too, for the past seven years. At 75 years'of age. she’s not even considering retirement. (Photo by Carla Gaff)

The Lord opens doors for the Cookie Lady

I Bv(ABLAGAFF I Stuff Writer

”1 don't go where I'm not ask.'' explained Irene Foreman of Warsaw, better known as the Cookie Lady "I let the Lord open the door for me so when people see me coming they say, 'lt’s the Cookie Lady — oh, I'm so glad to see you.' And, they're really tickled todeath tosee me." The Cookie Lady has been baking. selling and giving away cookies, breads and noodles in the Warsaw and North Websteareas for over 10 years. She's been a widow since 1964. Shortly after she turned 62. she found she was able to draw only $118.90 a month on social security and she couldn't live on that. She related that after several days of praying about what she could do about her financial situation. 'The Lord spoke to me. and I started selling homemade noodles immediately." Shortly after that a friend suggested she sell cookies, too. and suddenly she was in business. "None of the credit (for the sudden success of the business) goes to me," said Irene, "it all goes to the Lord." However. Irene has a business mind and is a great cook, which are two great assets for the Lord to work with in this endeavor. Irene went on to say. "The Lord is the president of my business and by the grace of God I'm just abletodothis." She spends hours making noodles, several more baking cookies, and another day baking sweet breads. Then, she bags everything up, puts the bags in boxes, loads it all into her station wagon and starts her rounds. She visits industries in Warsaw and North Webster that have ask her to come, stops in at several

barber and beautician shops, and simply makes her way around the area. She only sells cookies to those that have ask her to visit and does not solicit business. Although she declines to say how many bags of goodies she sells, she stated, she goes through approximately 200 pounds of flour a month and she buys oatmeal in 50-pound bags, vanilla by the gallon, large quantities of spices, and 3,000 plastic bags at a time. Ordering things in large quantities is nothing new for the Cookie Lady. She's owned and operated two different restaurants. During her 30 years of restaurant work, she had done everything from waitressing to cooking, managing and bookkeeping. She explained that she started making homemade noodles when she was nine years old, but never considered herself a great cookie baker. But now at 75. she commented, "being the Cookie Ladygives me a reason to get up every morning." "You can t out give the Lord — the more you give, the more he shovels to you." she said. "It's so great how the Lord works. When you ask him to direct you he does. He sees the whole picture from the beginning to the end." When ask. if at her age she wasn't going to start considering retirement, Irene stated. "I never knew I was supposed to retire. This keeps me busy and it’s therapy for me. I have my own schedule, set my own goals and pray for wisdom and direction every day." She continued. "1 am so thankful to live in America, the land of opportunity where we can accomplish w hatever God lays bn us to do. And. if I can do this (her business) anyone can."
