The wood-based deck is popular

Materia] items in today’s society are often liked to our happiness. So they seem. People want everything their neighbor has, and more. It seems we are constantly trying to keep up with the Joneses’. Perhaps one of the most popular household items today is the wood-based patio deck. Through the means of piecing lumber together — forming a deck — people are able to entertain guests in the great outdoors, yet have all the conveniences of homelife. But the size of the deck generally dictates the scale of entertaining. Obviously, larger decks are able to involve more people, thus, larger parties. “We build decks anyway people want them,’’ said Jack Rhoades from North Webster’s Sturonjac Builders. “Everyone has a different idea of how they want their decks built.” When the deck-building boom hit five years ago, rectangle decks were most popular They still are popular, however, people are now becoming more creative with their decks. Rhoades suggested more people are having decks built with different levels attached to the

main level. The space available will determine how many levels, if any, can be built. The most common people with bi-level, or even tri-level decks are those living on a hill. Because of the earth's formations deck lovers are able to captivate the breathtaking view of the lower ground. Often times water is enhanced with a multi-level deck. Still, multi-level decks are not limited to people with available space. Betty Scott and Richard Fletcher, both Syracuse residents, have multi-level deck’s, although neither reside on a hill. “I really enjoy my deck,” insisted Scott from her backyard deck. "The deck gives me the opportunity to enjoy the weather and entertain friends at the same time.” Scott’s deck, unlike Fletcher’s, is basic in nature. It is rectangle in shape, and has built-in benches alongside the outer edges. The only creative addition to Scott’s wood deck is the woodbuilt plant overhang in the middle of the foundation. Scott uses the creative addition to hang plants and wind chimes. “I showed the builders a similar deck design from a magazine and they built a near duplicate,” insisted Scott about her eye-sparkling deck. “I just wanted something different and
pretty. I am really pleased with their work.” Besides entertaining, Scott uses her deck to please others. Especially her grandchildren. “Oh they really like playing on the deck,” added Scott. “That’s what my deck is for, to make others happy.” \ Scott mentioned that several residents come over and sit on her deck — even if she isn’t home. The personable Woodland Acres resident is happy that others enjoy her deck. Meanwhile, the Fletchers’ use their above-ground deck for entertainment and family use. A swing is attached to the upper level of the deck, enabling the Fletchers’ children to enjoy the deck in a recreational fashion. “We don’t use the deck all that much,” insisted Sarah Fletcher. “But when we do use it, we enjoy it.” The Fletchers moved to their Wawasee Heights home just over one year ago. The deck was already in place, and the children have taken advantage of it. This deck resembles the more sophisticated decks of modern time. Access can be attained by going through the house, or by stairs from the backyard. “Decks certainly enhance the view of a house,” said Rhoades. “There’s a lot of different things you can do with a deck. They are
very practical. ” For the Fletchers and Scott, decks have become very practical. Perhaps the most practical home improvement device in the 1980 s. Get organized Speed up housework with organization. Post spawn bass
I CHARLESSHANK
Every year after the bass finish spawning, some of the slowest bass fishing of the year takes place. This period is often responsible for many fishermen putting away their bass fishing tackle. Many fishermen will decide that bass will not bite well until next year in the spring. The bass fishing is, indeed, very slow after the fish finish spawning. However, if a fisherman alters his fishing methods and can accept the fact that bass fishing will be hard, he can still catch enough fish to make fishing for bass worthwhile. The key to catching bass after they finish spawning is to realize that the bass will not be moving very much. By fishing slowly and in the right places, one can still find bass which will strike. One of the places where I have had success in fishing for post spawn bass is in heavy weed growth. I fish a lake every year where the weeds grow from the shore all the way out to the dropoff. They grow all the way to the top of the water and lie on the surface. Bass that have just finished spawning will lie under this heavy matted weed cover. The best weed cover will be the thickest that you can find. Patches of heavy weed cover are especially good. If the lake you fish has heavy lily pad cover, this cover will also hold fish. To hold bass, the lily pads must be very thick. Another type of cover that will hold fish will consist of heavy piers that are close to the water surface. If the piers are several feet above the water surface and are not built of heavy boards, they will usually not hold many fish. Piers that do not have many people using them are also much better. If you live on a lake that has clear water and very little weed growth, I would suggest fishing another lake that has heavy matted weeds and thick lily pad beds. Fishing the right type of lake at this post spawn period will definitely help your fishing success. Not all the bass in a lake will be under the weeds. Some will be in deeper water. Usually these post
spawn fish are very hard to catch. I have used several methods and many different types of tackle to try to catch these “other” bass. I have never been able to catch them with any consistency. Since these post spawn bass are buried in the weeds, you must fish slowly for them and thoroughly cover the weed area. If you are fishing a patch of thick matted weeds you should make several casts to the weed patch before moving on to another spot. Your casts should be placed about three feet apart and the boat shouldbe moved very slowly just outside the weed bed. I have found a few lures that work very well for this kind of fishing. When you fish these thick matted weeds you will be fishing on the surface. I know that many of you probably think there is no way this method will work. Believe me, it works! I don’t know how a bass buried in the weeds under a thick mat of weed growth can locate a lure skittered across the surface of the weed bed. I just know that bass can and will. I use plastic spoons which are often designed for skittering across the surface. These spoons are light in weight and do not sink rapidly They can be fished very slowly on the surface and are designed to be weedless. Several companies make suitable models. I use frog-patterned and sometimes black lures. Another lure that should work very well for this method of fishing is the snake type lure which floats. These new snake type lures are made with a molded foam head and a plastic body. I use very heavy rods and lines to fish these lures. I like to use a long six or seven foot rod. A flipping stick is ideal. I use 20 lb. test line andJike baitcasting reels for fishing with this heavy line. Spinning reels just do not cast 20 lb. test line very well. At times I would like even heavier line. I was fishing one day and had five bass on. I only landed one of the five and it was a “small” one. It weighed four and a half pounds and the others I saw were at least this size or larger.

ROLLICKING SWASH AND BUCKLE MUSICAL — "The Pirates of Penzance” will run July 15-26 at Enchanted Hills Playhouse, Syracuse. A rollicking swash and buckle musical, "Pirates” is awash with pirates, key-stone cops, dewey-eyed maidens and an eccentric major-general. The new version of the Gilbert & Sullivan production was presented on Broadway by the New York Shakespeare Festival.
Portraying the “Pirate King” will be well-known playhouse performer Paul Gregory Nelson (pictured). He will be joining a large cast which will also feature two guest artists, Gregory Franklin and Mark Korres. Both of these actors have performed at Enchanted. Hill Playhouse in seasons past. Franklin, who will be portraying "Frederic,” the young hero bound by duty, has been performing extensively in Chicago. After performing in "Pirates” as "Samuel,” a member of the pirate band, Korres will be doing a national tour of "Singing in the Rain, recreating the role played by Gene Kelly.
On Saturday evening, July 25, the annual celebrity auction will be held at the playhouse. The auction, beginning at 7 p.rn., will include such items as an autographed T-shirt from Bobby Unser, a "Knott's Landing” script signed by Donna Mills and an autographed picture of Tom Selleck.
