It happened ... in Syracuse

10 YEARS AGO. JULY 6, 1977 At a special session of the Syracuse Town Board last Wednesday night, the board unanimously agreed to join Syracuse and Turkey Creek Township with the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission, effective July 7. The decision to join the commission, which had not been played up previously, means that Syracuse and Turkey Creek wiU now be controlled by the area plan commission’s ordinances and hot local ones, starting July 7. y The Syracuse Tow/ Soard last week decided to join with the area plan commission thereby eliminating the need for a Syracuse Plan Commission. Several members of the Syracuse Commission feel that joining the area plan commission is wrong and are voicihg their objections Lake Wawasee’s annual Flotilla, held Sunday under a bright, hot sun, fell short of the expected amount of entries, but those participating had a lot of fun, and many received very attractive trophies. 20 YEARS AGO. JULY 5, 1967 An area in both postal service and in local railroad history ended last Friday (June 30) as the last regular arrived and departed Syracuse by Baltimore and Ohio train. Henceforth, all

main handled by the Syracuse post office will come and go by truck. The eighth annual Police and Firemen's fair will open on Monday, July 10, and run through July 15. The location again this year is to be east of the stoplight, one half block on Main street and in the two town parking lots just to the north. Rides and shows are planned for both parents and children. An open house will be conducted at St. Martin de Porres Catholic church at Syracuse on Sunday, July 9. Father Eugene Zimmerman, the pastor, will conduct tours and explain the spiritual significance of the architecture at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. After such tour the ladies of the St. Martin de Porres Parish Guild, will serve refreshments to the visitors in the parish hall. All residents of Syracuse-Wawasee area. North Webster, Milford, Pierceton and Warsaw, and all lake visitors are extended a cordial invitation to tour through the new church structure, built by Schumacher and sons during the past year.

The Hickory Pit, located across from the Johnson Hotel where the Mandarin Inn formerly was, barbecues its own meats there oh the grounds in a pit designed after the typical southern and western style and heated with hickory coals. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hebner of Muncie, Indiana, opened the Hickory Pit a year ago operating it during the summer months. It is Mr. Hebner who knows the secret of barbecuing ribs, chicken, hams and beef. He learned the tricks of pit barbecues from an old timer in southern Indiana when he was only fifteen years old and the
