Mothers Clubs started in 1949
By SUE WHITE Mothers Club Member The Mothers Clubs of Syracuse started around 1949 under the direction of Mrs. Lolite Blocker. A small group, the young mothers met regularly for fellowship, to share their ideas on parenting, and to extend their services throughout the community. Over the years the club has continued to grow with the
a needy tamily at Christmas and has developed a dental fund at Syracuse Elementary School for children in need of such care. Gamma Sigma women also engage in a full program of
number of children who’ve grown. The original club also has branched into four clubs, including: senior, junior, intermediate, ad primary — divided mainly by the ages of the mothers’ children. All clubs meet during the school year and contribute their time to work on different activities aimed at raising money for various community projects, as well as some of the personal needs of community members. The clubs have started several important community services.
leadership training, education, personal development, and social activities to compliment their philanthropic work and prepare themselves to meet the challenge of being a woman in the modern world.
such as Meals On Wheels and the nursery school at St. Andrew's Methodist Church. They continuously support the Scout Cabin and have bought and donated special equipment to the Emergency Medical Service. The clubs also have bake sales, sell school calendars and cookbooks, sell Christmas crafts, and sponsor various other fund raising activities. Each individual club also supports £ special family during the year, providing food, clothing, and other needed items at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Through the years the clubs devoted more of their time and themselves to meet the needs of. and to better, the Syracuse community. Thirty-five years later, a creed stating “We try to give a little of our 'mothering' to everyone” still stands.
