A Vid- £ ¥: phone' on the other end reassembles the information ¥ into a series of black and white pictures that are updated at one picture per second. For privacy, the camera can $ be switched off for voice-only transmission. ;¥ The capability of present telephone lines will not allow x you to send pictures and voice together on the same ¥ phone line. July, 1987 Dear Friends, Congratulations on 150 years of history and progress in Syracuse. It's fitting that you are celebrating your sesqui centennial at the same time the nation celebrates the 200th birthday of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It is an appropriate time to pause and reflect on the freedoms that enabled our forebears to found communities like Syracuse. I come from a small community like yours, and I believe that they represent the real America. Sometimes it seems the folks in Washington forget that life is lived between the Amerjcaji. coasts. We are a nation of hometowns. The American ideal is alive and well in towns like Syracuse. In a small town it is possible to live whatever life you choose for yourself, to raise your children according to your own principles and for all that, to be accepted by your neighbors for the person you really are. ■ ■ . > ’ cp ■ I think those are freedoms our founders had in mind 200 years ago when they wrote the Constitution. It's a spirit of individuality that they tried to protect with the Bill of Rights and the structure of the government. For me, the heartland is where that spirit is best characterized in the people. A wise man once wrote that "it is the highest goal of man, to be happy at home." This is the time for giving thanks that we live in a nation and in communities like Syracuse that allow us to be happy at home. Happy 150th, may you have 150 more. f Sincerely, / Zjohn Hiler, M.C.
